Chapter 28 – Red'lux Estate: Council Deliberation

The council chamber of the Red'lux Estate stretched high, a glass dome catching the first rays of morning, scattering pale light across the polished obsidian floor. It was a space built for scrutiny, both visual and political. Every surface reflected purpose; every shadow spoke of authority.

King Aldrich sat at the central throne, his posture calm, unyielding. Elira stood slightly behind him, hands folded at her waist, her expression serene but watchful. Around them, the senior councilors shifted uneasily, aware that today's discussion would decide not only an envoy mission but the fate of their heirs.

"We have received the Grayscale Envoy's confirmation," Aldrich began, his voice measured, yet carrying weight that silenced murmurs immediately. "Project Nebula Veil — the expedition to the Fog Beast Continent — requires our presence, and by extension, one of our sons."

A soft murmur rippled across the room. The council knew what this implied. The Fog Beast Continent, even at this stage, was considered volatile. Dangerous. Unpredictable. And the idea that the king would send one of the Red'lux heirs was almost… reckless.

A councilor cleared his throat, the sound amplified by the vast chamber. "Your Majesty… surely this is premature. Even with their training, the boys are not yet proven against Rift hazards. C-rank dungeons alone have claimed seasoned rift-hunters."

Aldrich's gaze flicked briefly toward the councilor. "They will not be alone. And the assessment will be strictly controlled. Yet caution alone cannot dictate our actions. The Grayscale expect a prompt response."

Another councilor, younger, arms crossed, interjected. "Your Majesty, if I may… the Fog Beasts' anomalies are increasing. Waiting risks losing crucial data and potentially allowing rival races to gain foothold."

Elira's voice cut through, calm, precise, commanding attention without a trace of arrogance. "The king's decision will shape not only political alignment but strategic advantage. I propose we do more than choose a representative. We prepare an approach that ensures both safety and maximum intelligence gain. One that leverages our current research discreetly."

Heads turned toward her. Some councilors exchanged glances; her reputation for calculated boldness preceded her. A pause followed, heavy enough that one could hear the hum of gravitic stabilizers in the ceiling.

Elira continued, softer now, almost intimate, though every word carried clarity: "We have methods to stabilize certain Rift feedback. It is untested at full scale, but with controlled exposure, the heir we send will gain firsthand data while minimizing risk. Moreover…" Her eyes briefly flicked toward Aldrich, and her tone lowered, almost a whisper, "we may also continue father's work… the work to recover the first queen. This operation could provide a controlled environment for experimental application."

Gasps rose across the council. Only Aldrich did not flinch. Some councilors whispered fervently to one another, while others stiffened, weighing whether to question her.

Aldrich leaned forward slightly. "Your suggestion is… bold. Perhaps dangerously so. Yet it aligns with the parameters we require. Controlled exposure. Direct assessment. And the research… will advance as necessary." His gaze swept across the room, calm but immovable. "We will proceed as she recommends."

Murmurs quieted. The council had not expected such clarity — or such agreement between the king and his consort. Several elder members leaned back, some frowning, some visibly relieved.

A younger scholar broke the silence. "And the heir? Will the two princes be evaluated, or is the decision final?"

Elira's gaze softened, but her voice remained decisive. "Evaluation is essential. Both heirs possess unique capabilities. Redmond with his energy integration, Raynar with kinetic and barrier control. Only through controlled testing can we determine who is best suited to lead the mission."

Another councilor hesitated, voice low. "Is this… fair? Will this trial truly measure capacity or merely obedience to protocol?"

Aldrich's tone, calm but commanding, cut through doubt like steel. "Fairness is secondary to efficacy. Both boys will undergo the same assessment. The dungeon Rift is rated C-class — challenging, but within safe parameters for heirs. Performance will dictate readiness. Protocol exists for reason; procedure protects both heir and dominion."

Elira added, quietly but firmly: "And both will be observed closely. The council, the guardians, and I will ensure no one steps beyond controlled bounds. The outcome will reflect ability, not favoritism."

Some councilors nodded, still cautious, yet recognition of Elira's meticulous oversight quelled most objections. A heavy silence followed, each member reflecting on the weight of the king's and consort's decision.

Aldrich finally gestured toward the Grayscale Envoy, who had been waiting quietly at the side. "Inform the envoy of our decision. The expedition will proceed, with one heir to accompany. The formal summoning will occur at first light tomorrow. Preparations must be discreet, yet complete."

The envoy inclined respectfully. "Understood, Your Majesty. Orders will be delivered immediately. The Grayscale Dominion will acknowledge with due protocol."

As the envoy departed, Aldrich allowed a rare glance at his consort. "You understand the risks. Both the expedition and the trial will test the boys beyond any normal limits."

Elira nodded, expression unreadable, though a spark of determination lingered. "I understand. And I trust them — as I trust you. But it is also a calculated opportunity. Success here could accelerate their growth, and the first queen… our work… cannot wait."

Aldrich's lips pressed into a thin line. "Very well. Let the council prepare the assessment. Notify the guardians. Ensure no detail is overlooked. And Elira…" He paused, voice low, yet carrying authority and warmth, "thank you. Your judgment will guide this, as always."

She inclined her head, expression calm. "For the dominion, for the heirs, for the work we began together."

The councilors filed out slowly, murmuring amongst themselves, some with pride, some with doubt. The chamber's light remained steady, reflecting Aldrich's calm as he returned to contemplation, and Elira stayed beside him, poised, silently calculating every angle for what tomorrow would bring.

Outside, the city of the Red'lux Estate hummed with its usual life, unaware that by sunrise, two princes would stand side by side — rivals, brothers, heirs — ready to be weighed in a trial that could shape the fate of their dominion and beyond.

The councilors lingered outside the chamber, their footsteps echoing faintly along the polished obsidian floors. Some whispered quietly among themselves, their voices carrying skepticism, awe, or curiosity.

"Sending an heir into a C-rank dungeon Rift… with only guardians and protocols as control?" one elder muttered, shaking his head. "Bold, yes… but reckless. What if something goes wrong?"

Another, younger, with sharp eyes glinting under the morning light, replied, "Reckless? Perhaps. Or maybe the king and consort know what we don't. Their confidence in Redmond isn't blind."

A third councilor, arms crossed and frowning, muttered under his breath, "Confidence or calculation, it's a risk the dominion will feel in blood if it fails."

Yet even as murmurs spread, some faces held a spark of admiration. Elira's suggestion had been daring, but strategically sound, and her reasoning had left few avenues for argument.

Meanwhile, in a quieter wing of the estate, Redmond awaited the formalities for his temporary leave from Aurelius Academy. The request had already passed through administrative channels, sanctioned directly by the king.

Kael Stroud leaned casually against the doorway, smirking. "So… looks like you're officially allowed to disappear from training grounds without Dean Ward exploding. Don't forget to write a postcard to the academy, will you?"

Redmond barely glanced at him, his expression calm. "This is not a vacation. It's a duty."

Selene Veyra stepped forward, folding her arms. "And a dangerous one, at that. Even with guardians. Remember your training — focus on control, precision, and observation. The C-rank designation doesn't mean it's safe."

Tiran Voss added, a faint grin tugging at his lips, "Well, looks like someone's finally going to test their limits outside the academy walls. Don't go breaking any rules — or furniture."

Redmond gave a small nod. "I won't. The mission is the priority. Personal record comes second."

Magnus, lingering behind slightly, looked on with a mixture of envy and curiosity. "You're lucky. Most of us won't see the inside of a real Rift for a long while. Don't screw it up."

Redmond's gaze briefly met his friend's. "It's not luck. It's preparation — and restraint."

Kael whistled, shaking his head. "Restraint? You? That'll be fun to watch."

Selene rolled her eyes. "Ignore them. Focus on the mission. We'll keep the academy running while you're gone."

With the formal leave granted, Redmond gathered what minimal personal effects he would need. His thoughts, however, were elsewhere — on the upcoming assessment, the Rift, and the pressure of being weighed alongside his brother.

Part 2 – Summoning of Redmond and Raynar, Pre-Trial Tension

The next morning, the estate's grand hall was already buzzing with movement. Guards moved with precise coordination, while councilors and servants adjusted ceremonial displays in anticipation. The twins were summoned together, as was protocol for matters of succession or duty, and the room hummed with the quiet tension of expectation.

Redmond entered first, crimson energy faintly shimmering along his aura — a subtle reminder of the restless power that dwelled within. Moments later, Raynar followed, his presence more kinetic, almost palpable, as if the air around him anticipated movement. His barrier control subtly adjusted the weight of the room; small wisps of shimmering light hinted at latent constructs floating momentarily before dissipating.

Aldrich, seated centrally, regarded both with an unreadable gaze. "You are here together. The dominion requires an envoy to accompany the Grayscale expedition. One of you will undertake this trial. Both will be assessed under identical conditions."

Elira's presence beside him added a calm, analytical counterpoint. Her voice was steady but carried weight. "The dungeon Rift has been rated C-class. Controlled exposure will measure skill, decision-making, and adaptability. Both of you will face the same environment, under supervision. Outcomes will determine the heir best suited for the mission."

Raynar's brow furrowed. "A trial against a dungeon Rift… and not a mock scenario?" His tone carried determination laced with tension.

Aldrich inclined his head. "Controlled does not mean trivial. Protocols are in place to prevent catastrophic failure. Your abilities will be tested. Strategy, power, and adaptability will dictate success."

Redmond's gaze remained calm. "Understood."

Elira stepped closer to the twins. "Remember, the purpose is not to outperform one another, though natural rivalry is expected. Observation and precision will matter as much as raw power. Trust your skills, but remain mindful of the environment."

Raynar glanced at Redmond, a mix of challenge and curiosity in his eyes. "This is our chance. You ready to see who is better?"

Redmond's response was measured, almost detached. "This is not a contest of pride. It's a trial. Survival, observation, efficiency. That is what matters."

The councilors murmured quietly, noting the subtle tension between the brothers — a dynamic layered with competition, respect, and the weight of expectation.

Aldrich finally spoke, his tone unyielding. "Guards, prepare the Rift access chamber. Twins, you will be briefed on the parameters, then deployed simultaneously. Observers will monitor remotely, but interventions will occur only if necessary. Your performance will be documented in detail."

The twins exchanged a brief glance, acknowledgment passing silently between them. Redmond's mind, however, already began tracing the sequence — analysis, energy management, potential Rift anomalies. Raynar's aura flickered in anticipation, kinetic energy pulsing faintly. Both were prepared, yet each carried the subtle undercurrent of rivalry that would shape every action.

As the guards led the twins toward the Rift chamber, councilors whispered behind them:

"Interesting… Redmond's restraint versus Raynar's kinetic style. That alone will reveal much."

"Indeed. The king's choice will not be simple, but the outcome is essential for the expedition."

Outside, servants cleared the way, and the first light of the day caught the twins' silhouettes — two heirs, facing the threshold of a dungeon Rift, and the first step toward deciding the envoy for Project Nebula Veil.
