Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: Clearing the Field

Li Rui had already discovered this.

The design of the Secret Realm in Demon Wind Temple was flawed; with the difficulty and number of monsters and traps here, there was no way agents between levels 1-5 could complete it. Unless a dozen or twenty people came in to clear it at once, the resources were simply insufficient.

Those monks twisted by some Power of Yin Sha were not only numerous but powerful, and fought on their home turf. No matter how many people entered, they would likely die in vain.

Li Rui was naturally very indignant about this situation.

"None of you should think about escaping, I'll take you all down! Spare others from being harmed."

At the beginning, he carried Chongxuzi, dashing back and forth to dodge the attacks of the group of demons while also attracting them, otherwise not all the events could be triggered.

When half of the twisted demon monks were killed or wounded, the tide of attack and defense changed. These evil demons, mostly monks from the temple tainted by Evil Qi, were not without intelligence. They could see that today's two intruders were different from those who came to die before.

Thus, the most insidious and cunning snake-headed demon monk quickly began to flee.

Li Rui certainly wouldn't allow such a thing to happen.

If they escaped, his mission couldn't be completed.

So he changed direction, picked up the old Daoist, and set out in hot pursuit, like a sheepdog driving sheep; he chased down whichever way they ran, and with the Daoist's protection, he didn't have to worry.

Not everyone could do this job; anyone with lesser attributes couldn't catch up at all.

The chaos in the temple gradually settled, and those demons, realizing they couldn't escape, could only hide.

At this time, a group of Twisted Bone Evil Monks huddled, shivering in a single courtyard room, listening intently to the outside noise.

Soon, everything returned to silence, and all sounds disappeared. They looked at each other, unsure if those two murderers had left.

One monk stood up and cautiously approached the door.

Bang!

Suddenly, a dull thud came from the door as something hit it from outside.

The demon monk, almost about to open the door, hurriedly retreated and squeezed together with several companions, staring fearfully at the wooden door.

Bang!

Bang!

After a few heavy smashes, the door was forcefully broken open, and the face that terrified the demons appeared at the opening.

"Hello there."

In a burst of Golden Thunder, the last few Twisted Bone Evil Monks were reduced to ashes.

[Target eliminated, random event Ambush on All Sides 3 completed.]

[Experience +350]

[Free attribute point +1, random quality item x2.]

Ambush on All Sides is a series of events, with higher rewards as you progress.

In theory, this is how it is, but the Secret Realm doesn't account for bad luck. For Li Rui, so-called two random quality items were less preferable than more attributes, but he had no choice.

The positive aspect was that with so many random events resolved, he was now just a hair's breadth away from reaching level 6, and had collected a pile of rewards too numerous to keep track of.

But for now, still in the dungeon, he didn't hurry to pop the champagne, because the main mission, surviving for five hours, was not completed yet.

"But all the monsters are cleared, right? Do I just need to kill time?"

As he was pondering this, a voice came from his shoulder: "Young hero, could you let this humble Daoist down?"

"Oh, I'm really sorry about that."

Li Rui said, "In the heat of the moment, for fear you might be in danger, I resorted to this strategy. Please forgive me."

Do you take me for a fool?

It's just that Chongxuzi was very cultured and, feeling he was too senior to quarrel with him, merely shook his head with a wry smile: "Young hero's actions are unconventional, yet his heart for chivalry is laudable."

Li Rui was taken aback for a moment, thinking to himself that he was just busy clearing the monsters, not exactly showing any chivalry. But then he realized that perhaps his ruthless behavior made the old Daoist think he was passionately fighting evil.

"Daoist master, what should we do now? If we are to remove the evil leader, where should we go to find it?" he inquired.

Hearing this, Chongxuzi thought he was committed to fully eradicating evil, and felt even more comforted: "Just now, I saw the direction of the evil Sha; this Cloud Temple has long been set up as an Array of All Heavens Gathering Evil by a master. The array core is at....."

Seeing Li Rui's puzzled eyes, he knew this young man did not understand arrays, so he smiled slightly: "Follow me."

Li Rui gleefully followed him.

The reason for doing this wasn't excessive compassion to save the world in a game dungeon, but because a glance at his item bar showed that many random events resulted in all ordinary materials and whiteboard equipment.

They were useful, but without a single excellent or rare quality item, it was disappointing.

He thought about it; Chongxuzi mentioned before that this temple was converted into a Human Sacrifice Array, and the evil leader must be eradicated.

So here's the question, that evil leader is the boss, right? Wouldn't the boss drop some equipment upon defeat? I can't leave empty-handed, having come this far.

Li Rui followed Chongxuzi across the numerous collapsed meditation rooms and courtyards, up the broken stone steps.

The old Daoist's sleeves fluttered as he walked leisurely. Li Rui was not timid either, since he had reached level 5 now and had dozens of attribute points, having reached the limit for this level 1-5 dungeon. Ordinary things could not pose a deadly threat to him, unlike when he first entered the Secret Realm.

Eventually, the two arrived at the Spirit Bone Tower in the center of the temple. Unlike the other structures here, this stone tower, standing three to five zhang tall, was quite new, seemingly built many years after the entire temple.

Seeing this, a grave expression appeared on Chongxuzi's usually calm face.

"Such means indeed."

Li Rui asked, "Daoist master, what do you mean? Is what we're looking for inside this tower?"

Chongxuzi shook his head: "It's rather troublesome. This is a soul-sealing technique from Fengdu; this tower is just a facade. Even entering it won't lead to the master of Evil Qi."

"Daoist master, you're so powerful and you still can't find it?"

"This humble Daoist's lifelong learning comes from Shenxiao Palace, specializing in the Thunder Talisman method, not adept at breaking predicaments of fate, I'm afraid it's difficult."

"Is there any way at all?"

Chongxuzi pondered for a moment and said: "This place gathers resentment through sacrificial offerings of the living, forming a human evil scheme. If a higher-ranking Celestial Killer or Earthly Killer enters the tower for suppression, it might provoke the Evil Qi, making the culprit unable to hide."

Li Rui nodded seriously, frowning: "What does that mean?"

"..."

"A Celestial Killer is one fated under an unclean star, of contrary fortune, unlucky in all things, a great misfortune, if the life pattern weakens even slightly, it surely leads to an early demise."

Li Rui coughed dryly: "Meaning extremely unlucky, right?"

"The young hero is perceptive, you can understand it that way."

Li Rui glanced at the Spirit Bone Tower and rubbed his nose, "Daoist master, you may not believe it, but I feel like I am that Celestial Killer."
