Ivy knocked on the door, and I let out a long exhale, exhaustion weighing on me after the shitshow of a night. A few seconds later, footsteps approached from inside. It was nearly midnight, way too late. We'd completely lost track of time in the car… doing what we were doing.
The ride back had been painfully awkward. Barely any words between us. At one point Ivy sneezed and I muttered "bless you" which she answered with a quiet "thank you." That was it. Nothing else.
The door swung open.
Ivy immediately slapped her hand over my eyes. "God, Mom! Don't open the door like that!"
I couldn't help but chuckle under her palm, the image already burned into my mind.
