Chapter 96 - Chapter 96:[ The Festival OF Masks ARC] The Hunter's Reflection

Chapter 96 (Part 07)

Lady Vaelia Laison stood in the shadows of her private tent, her fingers pressed against the cool surface of a silver mirror. The flames of a single candle flickered beside her, casting shifting shadows across her face that made her look older, wearier than she allowed anyone to see.

She did not move for a long time.

She was thinking.

Alok Fanando.

The name echoed through her mind like a discordant note, grating against the carefully constructed symphony of her plans. She had expected him to lose. She had planned for him to lose. Erik Coldsteel was a weapon a blade honed by years of pain and discipline. She had chosen him specifically because he was broken.

Broken people were predictable. They fought with fury, not strategy. They made mistakes.

But Erik had not broken Alok.

Alok had broken Erik.

She had watched the match from the shadows, hidden behind a pillar near the arena. She had seen Alok's movements cold, precise, inhumanly calm. She had seen the moment Erik's confidence cracked.

The moment he realized he was not the stronger fighter. The moment he understood that he had been outmatched not by strength, but by something far more dangerous.

Understanding.

He controlled the fight from the first second, she thought, her fingers tightening against the mirror. He read Erik's rhythm, found his weakness, and ended it when he chose to.

She had seen the way Alok moved. Not like a fighter. Like a predator. Like someone who had already seen the outcome before the battle began.

How?

She had studied his records. A quiet boy. Unremarkable. Nothing in his past suggested this level of combat intelligence. His school records were average. His family background was ordinary. His teachers had described him as "withdrawn" and "unremarkable."

And yet, he had survived the labyrinth. He had defeated Extera's minions. He had walked through the underworld's shadow and emerged stronger.

Something is protecting him. Something I cannot see.

She released the mirror and turned toward the tent entrance. Her silk robes whispered against the canvas floor as she moved.

"Tira."

The girl entered quickly, her face pale, her eyes downcast. She did not meet Vaelia's gaze. Her hands were trembling slightly, though she tried to hide them behind her back.

"Madam."

Vaelia studied her for a long moment. Tira was useful she was obedient, desperate, and easy to manipulate. But she was also weak. Her jealousy of Ceya made her predictable. Her fear of Vaelia made her pliable. Her desperation for approval made her reckless.

And recklessness was dangerous.

"Alok won," Vaelia said quietly.

Tira flinched as if struck. "I know, Madam. I"

"I do not care about your excuses."

Vaelia's voice was cold, sharp as a blade. It cut through the tent like winter wind.

"I care about results. You were supposed to ensure he lost. Instead, he defeated Erik Coldsteel in front of the entire tournament.

He is now a hero. The crowd loves him. The other champions respect him. Do you understand what that means?"

Tira's hands trembled. "I... I didn't think he could"

"Exactly." Vaelia stepped closer, her presence filling the space between them. "You did not think. That is your problem. You allowed your jealousy of Ceya to cloud your judgment. You underestimated him. And now, we are all paying the price."

She walked past Tira toward the tent entrance. The night air was cool against her skin, carrying the distant sounds of laughter and celebration from the festival grounds. Alok's victory had made him a hero. The crowd loved him. The other champions respected him.

That is dangerous.

She turned back to Tira, her eyes cold. "Your failure does not end the game. It only changes the rules."

Tira looked up, hope flickering in her eyes. "What do you want me to do, Madam?"

Vaelia smiled. It was a thin, cold smile that did not reach her eyes.

"Sera Dawnfield."

Tira's eyes widened. "Sera? But she's"

"She is yours, isn't she?" Vaelia's voice was sweet, almost gentle, which made it more terrifying. "You have something on her. Her brother, if I recall correctly. His illness. His expensive treatment. The debt she cannot repay."

Tira nodded slowly, her face pale. "Yes, Madam. Her brother's treatment. She owes me. She owes me everything."

"Then use her." Vaelia turned back to the mirror, studying her own reflection. The face that stared back at her was beautiful, composed, and utterly empty. "Alok has allies now. Rihan. Ravel. Even Sera, if she has the courage. We need to separate them. Isolate him."

She paused, allowing the words to sink in.

"Tell Sera that if she wants her brother to live, she will deliver Alok to us. Unarmed. Alone. At the old lighthouse on the eastern shore. Midnight. Tomorrow."

Tira's face paled further. "But... what if she refuses?"

Vaelia's eyes met hers in the mirror.

"Then she will learn what happens to those who betray me."

The tent fell silent.

Tira had left, her footsteps hurried and uneven. Vaelia remained alone, her gaze still fixed on the mirror. The candle flickered, casting long shadows across her face.

Alok Fanando.

She remembered the first time she had heard that name. It had been months ago, whispered by a trembling messenger from Castrone. The boy who survived the labyrinth. The boy who carries the pendant. The boy who defied the gods.

At first, she had dismissed it. A rumor. A ghost story. But then Ceya had come to Feilw Land, and the whispers had grown louder.

The girl carried something in her blood. Something ancient. Something that had been sleeping for generations.

The pendant is a key. The boy is the lock. And the girl is the door.

She had not believed it. Not fully. Not until she had seen Alok with her own eyes.

But now, watching him move through the tournament, watching him defeat champions who had trained their entire lives, watching him grow stronger with every passing day, she was beginning to wonder.

What are you, Alok Fanando?

She touched the mirror's surface. For a moment, she saw something flicker in the reflection not her own face, but a shadow. A woman with cold eyes and silver hair. A woman who looked like her, but older. Wiser. More dangerous.

Miso Elizabeth.

The ancestor. The mage who had cursed her bloodline with power and ambition. The woman who had tried to seize control of Laison Family and had nearly succeeded. The woman who had been defeated by her own pride.

Vaelia's fingers tightened against the glass.

I will not let history repeat itself. I will not let Ceya take what is mine. I will not let Alok destroy everything I have built.

She stepped back from the mirror, her heart pounding.

The game was not over. It was only beginning.

POV SHIFT Alok (Brief)

Alok stood near the edge of the festival grounds, staring up at the stars.

The night was cold and clear. The sounds of celebration drifted from a distance, muffled by the wind. He could hear laughter, music, the clinking of glasses. The world was celebrating. He was not.

He touched the pendant beneath his shirt. It was warm, pulsing faintly.

Ceya.

He had seen her write the words in the dirt. He had seen the desperation in her eyes, even through the mask Lisa had forced upon her. She was still there. Still fighting. Still hoping.

I will save you. I promise.

He heard footsteps behind him.

"Alok."

It was Rihan. His voice was quiet, careful. He had learned to read Alok's moods.

Alok did not turn. "What is it?"

"Sera Dawnfield came to me," Rihan said quietly. "She wants to talk to you. Tomorrow. Before the next round."

Alok's jaw tightened.

Sera.

He remembered her trembling hands. Her brother's illness. Tira's hold on her. She was trapped, just like Ceya. Just like Ravel had been.

"Tell her I'll be there," Alok said.

Rihan hesitated. "Are you sure you trust her?"

Alok finally turned to look at him. The moonlight carved shadows across his face.

"I don't trust anyone," he said. "But I will use everyone."
