Chapter 75 - Chapter 75: Silas’s Speculation and Doubts

Noon, twelve o'clock.

Indigo Grand Hotel.

Silas sat together with the Elite Four, Shingen Oak, and Professor Oak!

As soon as the waiter left, Professor Oak smiled warmly and asked, "Silas, do you know why we asked you here today?"

"I do." Silas nodded, enjoying his meal without missing a beat. "You want to ask me about the Evolution of the Gods, right?"

Evolution of the Gods?

At that phrase, the expressions of all six people at the table instantly shifted. No matter how minor the topic, anything that involved the word "god" instantly became a big deal. Each of them put on a serious face, and seeing that, Silas realized his words might be a bit too grandiose, so he clarified, "That's what the Kalos Region calls Mega Evolution."

"Mega Evolution?" Professor Oak frowned. As a world-renowned Pokémon researcher, he obviously knew about this. He asked, puzzled, "Silas, I remember that Mega Evolution requires a special Evolution Stone, right? So why do you call it the Evolution of the Gods? And what exactly do you mean—can you break it down for us?"

"Sure." Silas wouldn't dream of refusing his own grandpa's request. He continued eating as he patiently explained the principles behind it all. Everyone else listened intently: Professor Oak was pensive; Agatha's face betrayed nothing; but Lorelei, Lance, Bruno, and Shingen Oak all showed keen interest.

"Silas," Lance piped up, clearly excited, "so you're saying if I find the right Mega Stone, my Pokémon could Mega Evolve too?"

"Yep." Silas nodded, holding nothing back. "As long as the Evolution Stone matches your Dragon-type Pokémon, and your Pokémon is 100% loyal to you. But honestly, I wouldn't recommend you guys use that method for Mega Evolution."

"Why not?" Lance sounded puzzled, and the others turned to look at Silas as well.

"Are you stupid?" Silas shot Lance a withering look, then said coolly, "My Tyranitar could evolve on his own, but it came at the cost of needing a full week of rest afterwards. Sure, in the Kalos Region, the Mega Evolution Stones are said to cancel out that side effect, but do you really think there's no price at all?"

Silas's words set everyone at the table thinking.

None of them were kids anymore—they were well aware that if you want something, you have to pay for it. If Mega Evolution really gave Pokémon such overwhelming power, then there had to be some heavy cost associated with it.

"Did you find anything out?" Shingen Oak asked, leaning in with a frown.

"Not exactly," Silas admitted, shaking his head. "It's just a guess. I suspect any Pokémon that uses Mega Evolution Stones will find it almost impossible to break into pseudo-legendary status." Silas's theory hit the Elite Four like a thunderbolt. While Kanto might not be short of Elite Four members, their group was easily among the strongest in any region. Several of them even had Champion-tier Pokémon, and—Agatha aside—the rest were still young, all with their sights set on becoming true Legendary-level Trainers!

If using a Mega Stone to evolve meant they'd never step into the realm of pseudo-legendaries, none of them could accept that!

"Are you sure?" Lance pressed, eyebrows furrowed.

"Not at all," Silas replied, grinning mischievously. "If you're curious though, you could always try it out on your Dragonite."

"Screw you!" Lance rolled his eyes. "That's the guardian of our clan! The whole family's counting on him to break into pseudo-legendary status. If my old man found out I'd risked that for an experiment, he'd slap me through the wall!"

Lance's words drew a round of laughter from everyone. But once the chuckles faded, Agatha asked in her usual, spooky tone, "Silas, does that mean my Pokémon could Mega Evolve too?"

"Definitely!" Silas nodded right away, answering seriously, "Grandma, if you ever want to try Mega Evolution for your Pokémon, just let me know and my Tyranitar will help out."

"No need," Agatha chuckled, shaking her head. There was real affection in her voice as she said, "It's enough that you'd even offer. I'm too old for all that fuss. Honestly, my only wish now is to see you become Champion and settle down, get married, and let your old grandma enjoy some family happiness for once."

"Ahem." Silas fake-coughed, desperate to change the topic. "So, anyway, since I've answered your questions, mind helping me out with something that's been bugging me?"

"Ask away." Everyone turned to Silas, and Professor Oak simply nodded.

"Teppei," Silas said, naming yesterday's opponent. He considered his wording. "After fighting him, I think his skills are more than enough for the Champion title in Kanto. Why hasn't he made it? Isn't his ability at that level?"

"He's there," said Shingen Oak, nodding. "Teppei's actually at Champion level and could handle the position easily. But it's not just about Kanto—he wouldn't win that role in any other region, either."

"But why?" Silas frowned, confused.

"He's not strong enough," Agatha answered, a touch regretful. "Among us Kanto Elite Four, Teppei's skills probably rank third. Fighting-types might be powerful, but being pure Fighting means it's just too easy to get countered. I've mentioned it to him in the past, but he never listened. So I couldn't let him move up."

Now that Agatha explained, it finally made sense to Silas.

Teppei's situation was actually a lot like Lance's. Every year, Lance tries to challenge the Kanto Champion, but Lorelei always shuts him down—because Ice-types are a hard counter to Dragon-types. And for Teppei to challenge for Champion, he'd have to get past Agatha first—not to mention Lance, whose dragons are all part Flying and can soar out of range. Slaking might be a monster, but if he can't hit his opponent, he's helpless.

...

Night had fallen.

A chilly autumn wind swept over Indigo Plateau, but not everyone could fall asleep.

Take the Elite Four and Shingen Oak, for example. With the exception of Agatha (who'd turned in for the night), the rest gathered at a local bar, quietly thinking things over as they drank. And the only thing on their minds was Mega Evolution!

Silas might've shared his theory that afternoon, but for a group like them, a "theory" was nowhere near enough—they needed hard evidence. But nobody was willing to pay the price for that test, so a heavy silence hung between them, lasting until just before the bar closed for the night.

"Alright already," Lance finally broke the quiet with a sigh, glancing at the clock. "If nobody wants to say it, guess I'll put it out there—are you guys really ready to let this chance to get stronger slip away? What if Silas is wrong after all?"

Lance's words snapped the others' attention over to him. Lorelei said, wryly, "And what do you suggest? Any of you actually willing to use your own Pokémon as test subjects? I know I'm not!"

"Count me out!" Bruno shook his head immediately.

"Same here," Shingen Oak added. "I'm basically a desk jockey these days—not gonna gamble my partners' futures for this, not when I can afford to take it slow."

"I get it." Lance rolled his eyes, laughing bitterly. "Truth is, I don't want to either. But hear me out—I've got a plan."

That instantly piqued everyone's interest. As long as it didn't involve their own Pokémon, any scheme would be worth considering. Shingen Oak narrowed his eyes. "Let's hear it."

"Here's the idea..." Lance lowered his voice conspiratorially. "Look, Mega Evolution has all of us tempted, right? No way Trainers from other regions aren't getting drawn in too. So—we 'leak' the news, let them chase after it and test it themselves. We just have to observe for a year or two, and we'll get our answer. What do you think?"

"..." Shingen Oak.

"..." Bruno.

"..." Lorelei.

The three of them stared at Lance, speechless. They hadn't expected him to come up with such a devious plan—to use the other regions' Elite Four and Champions as guinea pigs. And this wasn't just screwing over one rival, but potentially a whole bunch at once! If word got out, they'd face the wrath of every top Trainer from all over the world!

"Why the long faces?" Lance rolled his eyes again. "If we don't want to pay the cost, let someone else do it. If things go south, we all deny it, simple as that!"

Shingen Oak mulled it over, then finally grinned. "I'm in!"

"Me too," Bruno said, steady as ever. "It's a rotten idea, but if Shingen's onboard, so am I!"

With Bruno's buy-in, all three turned their gaze to Lorelei, who couldn't help but smile wryly. "What're you guys looking at me for? If you're going all in, count me in too. Besides, Silas will be our Kanto Champion by then. If push comes to shove, it's not like anyone's gonna dare come storming our League."

"Good." With Lorelei's agreement, Lance beamed. "Let's make sure we keep everything hush-hush though—don't want to cause Silas any extra trouble!"

The rest nodded in agreement and soon got into a heated discussion—not even caring that the bar was closing for the night.

...

Silas, for his part, couldn't sleep either.

But his reasons were very different from the Elite Four—while their mood was mostly frustrated, his was all excitement!

Just before bed, almost absentmindedly, he opened up the Elemental System. But once he saw the info it displayed, he was instantly wide awake!

He'd expected his data to be over-the-top, but seeing it in person still made his heart race. Ever since catching Mewtwo and learning about the path to godhood, Silas had developed a kind of awe—a hint of fear—toward Legendary Pokémon.

Sure, he owned Mewtwo, but Mewtwo's godhood still wasn't fully formed. Even with the help of Elemental Crystals, all that really did was speed up the process. He still wasn't a true Legendary yet. So seeing he was just 130,000 gold short from another thousand-draw roll, Silas was thrilled!

A Legendary Pokémon!

A real-deal, honest-to-goodness Legendary Pokémon!

It was every Trainer's dream—including his. If he got a combat-focused Legendary, he'd finally have the power to face even the most powerful Trainers head-on!

And if it was a rare support-type Legendary, it'd take his whole team's strength to a whole new level!

Just thinking about owning such an incredible Pokémon made Silas's eyes light up an unnatural green. He kept giggling as he lay in bed, grinning like a fool. The rest of his Pokémon, hanging out in his Master Ball, couldn't help but worry: Did our Trainer finally lose it? Why's he giggling to himself in the middle of the night…?

The next day.

9 A.M.

Silas reported right to Stadium Two.

If things had gone as originally planned, all of Silas's matches would've been held in Stadium One.

But after yesterday's Mega Tyranitar rampage, Stadium One was destroyed—no way they could repair it overnight. So, the League moved Silas to Stadium Two!

His opponent today was a little weaker than Teppei, but Silas actually felt even more on guard—today, he'd be facing Kyouya. He was one of the five top Trainers listed by Lorelei, and he'd started out as a bounty hunter. Anybody who's survived that wild lifestyle for years wasn't going to be some pushover—nor would his Pokémon.

Thinking about Kyouya, Silas stepped through the Trainers' tunnel. A wall of deafening cheers flooded his ears. Normally, the sound would fire him up, but today it barely registered—his attention was completely captured by the man standing on the upper stage, a sunny smile on his face.

The stranger looked at most twenty-four or twenty-five. With brown hair, striking good looks, and those sky-blue eyes radiating all sorts of secrets, nobody could read what he was thinking from that smile. And from his position up on stage, it was clear—this was Silas's opponent: Kyouya.

"Hello," Silas had barely reached the platform when Kyouya greeted him with a bright, friendly smile. "My name's Kyouya—I'll be your opponent today. Looking forward to it!"

That easygoing smile of Kyouya's was almost like a big brother greeting his kid sibling—which just made Silas all the more wary. If he didn't already know the guy's backstory, that smile might just have fooled him. But there's a saying: Never slap a smiling face. Since Kyouya greeted him first, Silas had to show some manners back, responding with a polite, professional tone: "Silas. Nice to meet you."

Short and to the point—Kyouya noticed Silas wasn't interested in small talk, so he just fiddled with his Poké Ball and waited for the match to start.

Soon enough, the commentator and referees took their places.

"Ladies and gentlemen!" came the familiar, rousing voice. "Welcome to Indigo Plateau's Stadium Two. Today's match: the Kanto tournament—down to our top eight vying for the final four!"

"Let's get to know our two competitors for the day!"

"On the red side, we have Kyouya—a familiar face to all, known for a battle style that's fast, precise, and brutal—no wasted movement, no flashy tricks, just raw ability! Nobody knows his full power!"

"As for the blue side—Silas! A Trainer even more familiar to you all, whose Pokémon are rumored to have unfathomable strength. He's crushed every rival so far with a ferocious, overwhelming style. Will he pull off another show-stopping battle today?"

At the commentator's words, the crowd erupted!

"I don't care about the show—I just wanna know if this stadium's made of cardboard like yesterday's! If it is, I'm out! I came to watch a match, not to risk my life!"

"Yeah, seriously! If today's arena is as flimsy as Stadium One, it'll collapse before the sixth match. Can the League guarantee our safety?! We aren't looking to die for this!"

"Right! What the hell did they do with all our taxpayer money? How dare they build a stadium made out of paper mache? Do you people have any shame? Or did you feed all the funds to your Growlithe?"

The grumbling from the stands made the commentator want to weep. He'd actually checked all the safety certificates for Stadium One yesterday—there wasn't a single flaw. If the stadium itself wasn't the problem, then obviously, the real problem was Mega Tyranitar!

And Stadium Two? Built at the exact same time as Stadium One, with the same structural integrity—which meant whether it would hold up depended entirely on what Pokémon Silas decided to use today, not the construction at all!

As the audience's complaints got louder, the commentator knew he had to speed things up. So, he nudged the referees, who got the hint and ran straight onto the field, yelling:

"We now begin the Indigo Tournament quarterfinals! Rules are: Full 6v6 team battle—both Trainers can switch their Pokémon at will. When one team's Pokémon all lose the ability to fight, the other Trainer wins! Is that understood?"

"Understood." Kyouya and Silas nodded together.

"In that case… let the battle begin!"

With that, the referees waved their flags and left the field!

As soon as they were gone, Kyouya's Poké Ball enlarged in his hand. Smiling, he said to Silas, "Silas, I've heard a lot about you—can't wait to see what you're really capable of today! Go, Alakazam!"

'Alakazam!'

Alakazam appeared, clutching two Twisted Spoons and wearing brown armor.

Testing me?

Silas raised an eyebrow, a smirk playing at his lips. As the commentator watched with bated breath, Silas tossed out his own Master Ball. "Mewtwo! I'm counting on you today."

Bang!

A flash of white light!

Mewtwo, looking like a massive psychic cat, landed silently on the field!

As soon as Mewtwo appeared instead of Tyranitar, the commentator's tense face broke into a smile. He shouted, "Whoa! The legendary Pokémon finally joins the fray! Ever since the round of 128, Silas hasn't used Mewtwo in battle—what kind of performance will this legendary powerhouse put on today?!"
