Chapter 21 - Chapter 21: The Queen of Midnight

Chapter 21 – The Queen of Midnight

The air froze—not from cold, not from ice—but from stillness.

Selene's words hadn't been loud. They didn't thunder like Kaelen's molten fury, didn't roar like Chen Yue's desperate strikes. They simply existed—and that was enough.

The molten phoenix hovering above Kaelen's head stuttered, its wings freezing mid-beat, flames flickering like candles caught in a sudden void.

Kaelen's golden eyes narrowed, his grin faltering for the first time.

"You…" His voice, usually smooth as silk wrapped in steel, now dripped venom. "…are no ordinary stray."

Selene stepped forward, slow and graceful as moonlight gliding across a midnight sea. Her bare feet touched the molten cracks in the marble—and the lava simply hissed out, turning solid under her step. The oppressive heat that warped the air seconds ago vanished, replaced by a coolness so profound it made the soldiers shiver despite their armor.

Ayara clutched Chen Yue tighter, eyes wide as Selene passed them without a glance. Velira's grip on her sword trembled—not from fear, but from something deeper. Something primal.

The aura Selene exuded was not mana. It was something older, something vaster—like standing on the edge of eternity and realizing eternity was staring back.

"You think this is your domain?" Kaelen snarled, flames coiling tighter around him, his voice laced with wrath. "I am the Hand of Ebonflare! I have slaughtered Magus Kings and shattered fortresses! Who in the abyss do you think you are?!"

Selene smiled faintly.

"I am Selene." Her tone was soft. Absolute. A whisper that outweighed every roar in existence.

"And you are a worm that mistook the torchlight for the sun."

Kaelen's face twisted. The phoenix above him let out a deafening shriek as molten fire exploded outward, scorching the chamber in an inferno of blinding gold. Stone vaporized into ash. The ground convulsed, splitting into rivers of lava.

And yet Selene didn't move.

When the firestorm cleared, she was still walking forward. Unburned. Untouched. Her silver hair drifted lazily in the superheated air like strands of starlight. Her violet eyes glowed faintly—like galaxies opening their gaze.

"Impossible—!" Kaelen's voice cracked into a snarl as he thrust both arms forward, runes blazing along his skin like brands.

"Phoenix Ascendant! Devour her!"

The molten bird screamed, its body collapsing into a singularity of flame before erupting into a blazing tidal wave, a living sun crashing down on Selene with annihilating force.

Ayara screamed. Velira gritted her teeth, her aura flaring in vain as she tried to shield Chen Yue. The soldiers fell to their knees, some clawing at their faces as the sheer mana pressure crushed their lungs.

The tidal wave hit.

And broke.

Not against a wall. Not against a shield. It simply… stopped.

Flame, molten and endless, hung in the air like frozen glass, every droplet of burning gold suspended as if time itself had surrendered. In that silence, Selene raised one delicate hand.

She closed her fingers.

The sun died.

The phoenix, the fire, the tidal wave—all of it imploded into a singular black spark that drifted into nothing.

The chamber plunged into silence so deep it felt like the world had ended.

Kaelen stared, his molten eyes wide, his breath harsh.

"…What… are you?"

Selene tilted her head slightly, her smile faint, her gaze cold as the void.

"The last question you will ever ask."

She moved.

No flash. No blur. One instant she stood ten paces away—the next, her palm rested gently against Kaelen's chest.

"Return to ash."

The world shattered.

The explosion wasn't loud—it was silent, a shockwave of pure nothingness that inverted color and light for a heartbeat. When sound returned, Kaelen was already flying backward, his body ripping through a dozen pillars before slamming into the far wall so hard it cratered into dust.

Blood sprayed from his lips in a crimson arc. He staggered, coughing, flames sputtering wildly around him as his molten eyes flickered with something Chen Yue never thought he'd see in a Magus Lord.

Fear.

"You… you're…" Kaelen's voice broke into a ragged laugh that quickly devolved into a cough, blood spilling down his chin. "…a fragment… aren't you?"

Selene's expression didn't change. Her voice was soft, almost bored.

"Run."

Kaelen froze.

"What—?"

"Run," she repeated, her gaze burning with distant starlight. "Tell your king the Nameless Path has returned. Tell him the sky he thought buried is awake once more. And tell him…" Her eyes narrowed, violet flaring like the edge of oblivion. "…when I come, his throne will burn."

Kaelen stared for a heartbeat longer—then flames erupted around him in a violent storm. The heat surged, twisting space, and in the blink of an eye, Kaelen was gone, leaving only a smear of molten gold across the shattered wall.

The soldiers didn't hesitate. They dropped their weapons and fled in blind panic, their boots pounding as they vanished down the corridor like rats before a wildfire.

Silence fell.

Heavy. Endless.

Selene stood alone in the center of the ruined chamber, her silver hair drifting gently in the quiet breeze that followed devastation. For a moment, no one breathed.

Then Chen Yue coughed, spitting blood onto the cracked floor.

Ayara's healing glow flared desperately as she clutched his arm, tears streaming down her cheeks.

"Idiot! You nearly tore your body apart!"

Velira knelt on his other side, her jaw tight, fury and something else burning in her icy eyes as she glared at him.

"What the hell was that? You could have—"

"Won?" Chen Yue rasped with a weak grin, blood staining his teeth. "Yeah… almost."

Velira's glare deepened—but there was no heat behind it this time. Only fear. And something softer, hidden beneath her frozen walls.

Selene approached, her steps soundless. Chen Yue forced himself to look up, his breath ragged.

"You…" he rasped. "What the hell are you?"

Her violet eyes met his, calm, infinite.

"Your anchor," she said softly. "And the first of seven."

Before he could speak, the System's voice sliced through his mind, colder and sharper than ever.

[System Alert: Fate Divergence Complete.]

[Update: Ebonflare Kingdom has issued an Execution Order – Bounty Active.]

Chen Yue's breath hitched. His vision blurred as lines of crimson text scrolled across his mind like burning brands.

[Do you wish to initiate Forbidden Evolution?]

[Warning: Success Probability – 3%. Failure Result – Instant Death.]

[Cost: All Remaining Lifeforce.]

His blood ran cold.

Three percent.

Ayara's voice broke through his haze, trembling, fierce.

"Don't you dare—don't you dare even think about it!"

Velira's grip tightened on his shoulder. Her eyes, usually frozen steel, blazed with raw fire.

"Live, damn you! Don't throw yourself away!"

Chen Yue stared at the glowing crimson prompt. His heart thundered like a war drum.

Three percent chance to live… or die a worm hunted by kings.

He bared his teeth in a bloody grin.

"System…" he whispered, his voice hoarse and wild.

"…Begin Evolution."
