Gatomon and BlackGatomon were quick, their forms blurring as they intercepted confused civilians trying to walk through plate-glass windows. They used their tails to gently steer people away, a soft thwack here, a firmer nudge there. They weren't hurting anyone, just redirecting the human lemmings.
Peter, meanwhile, had webbed up three guys trying to hotwire a parked taxi. They hung there, suspended upside down, their faces slack. No resistance, just a dazed, empty stare.
Gwen and Renamon returned, having successfully guided a small group into a relatively undamaged store. Renamon looked exhausted, her fur slightly ruffled.
"They're not responding," Gwen reported, her voice low. "No fear, no anger, just... compliance."
Peter dropped down beside us, his spider-sense still prickling. The sheer lack of normal human reaction was unsettling.
"It's like they're sleepwalking," Peter added, looking at the dangling thieves. "They don't even seem to notice they're caught."
I pulled out my Digivice, a grim feeling settling in my stomach. This wasn't some random Digimon causing a ruckus. This felt directed, almost surgical in its application.
I activated the scan function, aiming it at one of the dazed men Peter had webbed. The Digivice screen flickered, processing the data. A faint, almost transparent digital signature overlaid the man's image. It was unfamiliar, definitely not a standard Digimon aura.
[SCAN COMPLETE]
The system confirmed my suspicions. A Digimon was involved, but not in the usual destructive way. This was something subtler, more insidious.
"Mind control," I muttered, the word feeling heavy. "Some kind of digital influence."
"So, a Digimon is doing this?" Peter asked, his head cocked. He still looked uncomfortable with the whole concept.
"Looks like it," I confirmed, pocketing the Digivice. "And it's not a direct attack. It's… influencing them."
"We need a plan," Peter stated, his eyes scanning the chaotic street. "This isn't just about stopping a monster. It's about figuring out how to undo whatever this is."
Gwen nodded, her brow furrowed in thought. "It's not a typical crime spree. They're not stealing for profit, they're just… acting out random impulses."
We started to huddle closer, trying to make sense of the situation, when my Digivice suddenly blared. It was a sharp, insistent ping, unlike any alert I'd heard before.
[ROGUE DIGIMON DETECTED. HIGH INTENSITY.]
Gwen's Digivice chimed in unison, a mirrored alert flashing on her screen. Her eyes met mine, a shared understanding passing between us.
"Speak of the devil," I mumbled, pulling out my Digivice again. The map showed a clear, strong signal, pinpointing a location just two blocks away. It was moving, fast.
"Looks like our mystery Digimon just decided to make an appearance."
We didn't need to discuss it. The Digivice signal was our lead, our priority. Civilians were mostly out of immediate harm, thanks to Peter and the others. Now we needed to shut down the source.
"Let's go," I said, my voice low.
Peter nodded, already launching himself with a webline. Gwen and Renamon followed, Renamon a blur of golden fur. I kept pace, a bit slower than them, but determined. The signal led us two blocks over, into a shadowed alleyway.
The air grew heavy there, a metallic tang mixing with the city grime. My stomach twisted. It felt like something wrong was radiating from the darkness.
Then I saw it. Gyuukimon.
It stood there, a monstrous ox-spider hybrid. Its hide was dark, almost black leather, glowing red markings pulsing on its body like a corrupt heartbeat. Two massive, bone-white horns jutted from its head, sharp enough to pierce steel. Its eyes were pure crimson, absorbing all light, making its face a shadowed, evil mask.
Gyuukimon moved with a heavy, deliberate gait, radiating an oppressive sense of raw power. It was larger than any Digimon I'd seen in person, maybe twice the size of Greymon. It just stared at us, its blank, unfeeling gaze sending shivers down my spine.
A low, guttural growl rumbled from its chest, a sound that seemed to vibrate the very air. Its red eyes locked onto us, filled with a calculating, malicious intent. This thing wasn't here to play games.
"That's our guy," I stated, pulling out my Digivice.
"Definitely not a rookie," Peter muttered, his voice tight. He pulled his mask fully over his face, ready for a fight.
"Gatomon, BlackGatomon, Renamon, engage!" I commanded, pointing my Digivice.
Gatomon and BlackGatomon materialized in a flash of light, landing with their claws extended. Renamon shimmered into existence beside Gwen, her stance disciplined and ready.
"Looks like we're doing this the hard way," Peter said. He shot out a thick stream of webbing, aiming for Gyuukimon's legs, hoping to bind it.
Peter's web streamed out, a thick white rope aimed at Gyuukimon's leg. It connected, wrapping around the massive limb. He strained, trying to pull it off balance.
Gatomon sprang forward, her Lightning Paw a blur of white. BlackGatomon followed, claws extended, her Lightning Paw aiming for the same spot. Renamon launched Diamond Storm, a volley of razor-sharp leaves.
Thwack!
Peter's web snapped, the strands tearing from Gyuukimon's leg with a loud crack. Gatomon and BlackGatomon's attacks landed, but the beast's dark, leathery hide absorbed the blows. Renamon's leaves simply bounced off, clattering uselessly on the pavement.
"It's tough," Peter grunted, already shooting another webline, this time aiming for an overhead lamppost to gain height.
Gyuukimon let out a snort, a cloud of acrid vapor puffing from its nostrils. It lowered its head, those massive horns pointing straight at me. A deep rumble started in its chest, growing louder.
Rumble!
It charged, a freight train of twisted muscle and data. The ground shook with each step. I shouted a warning, pushing Gwen behind a parked car.
SCREEEECH!
Gyuukimon's horns swept wide, tearing through the air. The force of its charge ripped a section of the alley wall clean off. Debris rained down around us.
"Everyone scatter!" I yelled, diving out of the way.
Gatomon and BlackGatomon darted to opposite sides. Renamon executed a quick, fluid backflip, landing on a dumpster. Peter swung overhead, narrowly avoiding a crushing blow that left a horn-shaped gouge in the pavement where he'd been standing.
This thing was seriously strong. Our initial attacks did nothing. It moved with a brutal, focused power that reminded me of a corrupted bulldozer.
"It's too armored for direct attacks!" I yelled, trying to be heard over the beast's heavy breathing. "Spider-Man, keep it distracted! Digimon, target its legs, try to get under its armor!"
Peter landed briefly on a fire escape, then launched himself again, zipping around Gyuukimon, trying to draw its attention. He shot webs at its eyes, at its horns, anything to slow it down.
Thwip!Thwip!
Gyuukimon roared, swatting at Peter with one of its massive forelegs. The web hit its eyes, but the beast just blinked, shaking off the sticky substance. It was barely even a bother.
Gatomon and BlackGatomon moved with precision, weaving between its spider-like legs. Gatomon aimed for a knee joint, trying to find a weak point. BlackGatomon struck at an ankle, claws scraping against the tough hide.
Renamon, faster and more agile, tried to get behind it, seeking out the softer underbelly of its spider-half. She unleashed Power Paw, a rapid series of kicks.
CLANG!
The sounds of their attacks echoed in the alley, sharp and metallic. Gyuukimon barely flinched. The attacks were landing, but the damage numbers were practically zero. This thing was a tank.
"My attacks aren't connecting!" Gatomon called out, frustrated.
"Mine either!" BlackGatomon added, dodging a backward kick that pulverized a garbage bin.
Renamon landed a solid hit on its abdomen, but Gyuukimon simply twisted, catching Renamon with a flick of its tail. The fox Digimon skidded across the ground, a small digital spark flying from her.
"It's like hitting solid rock," Renamon gasped, pushing herself up.
Gyuukimon let out another roar, a sound that seemed to tear at the very fabric of the alley. It spun, its spider-legs sweeping wide. Peter barely clung to a wall, his knuckles white.
"We need more power!" Gwen shouted, her Digivice already out. "Renamon, Digivolve!"
"No!" I shouted, holding up a hand. "Not yet. We don't know what we're up against. Digivolving now wastes energy if it's not enough."
My plan was falling apart. Their attacks were having no effect. This Digimon was tougher than anything I'd faced. It was like a brick wall that could also move like a demon.
Gyuukimon ignored us for a second, focusing on Peter who was swinging directly overhead. It leapt, an unnatural spring in its heavy body. Its horns grazed Peter's costume.
Tear!
Peter tumbled through the air, barely catching himself with a new webline. A fresh rip showed on his red and blue suit.
"This thing is too strong," Peter said, landing hard on the ground. He looked exhausted. "I can't get a good hit in."
Gyuukimon turned its attention to Gwen, taking a slow, deliberate step. Its red eyes narrowed. It was going for the weakest link.
"Gwen, get back!" I yelled, running forward. I activated my Digi-Gloves, preparing for a direct strike.
Gatomon and BlackGatomon jumped in front of Gwen, trying to intercept. Gyuukimon merely lowered its head again.
CLANG!
Its horns hit the ground. It was another charge. This time, it was aimed directly at us.
"Everyone, brace yourselves!" Peter screamed.
We spread out again, avoiding the direct path. Gyuukimon slammed into the opposite wall, leaving a crater. The alley was getting torn up. It was like watching a bull in a china shop, only the bull was made of solid hate and digital code.
My Digivice suddenly flared. A new signal. Not Gyuukimon. Something else.
From the deeper shadows at the end of the alley, a group of figures stumbled forward. They were men and women, all with that same vacant, dazed expression. They were the mind-controlled civilians from earlier. They formed a line, blocking the alley exit.
Gyuukimon stopped its rampage, turning its head toward the new arrivals. It let out a low, satisfied bellow.
"It's using them as a shield!" Gwen exclaimed.
Peter shot a web at Gyuukimon's leg, trying to pull it away from the civilians. The web stretched, but Gyuukimon held firm. It simply stared at us, its red eyes seeming to mock our predicament.
Rooooooar!
Gyuukimon roared again, a taunting sound that echoed off the alley walls. Then, with surprising speed for its size, it turned and melted into the shadows, disappearing from sight.
"No!" I yelled, taking a step forward.
But the line of mind-controlled people blocked the way. They didn't move, just stood there, arms slack, eyes empty. We couldn't go through them without hurting them.
"It got away," Peter said, shaking his head. He looked at the civilians, then back at the spot where Gyuukimon vanished. "Now what?"
This was a mess. Gyuukimon was gone, and now we had a bunch of mind-controlled folks blocking the alley. We couldn't just leave them, and we couldn't just plow through them.
"Alright, new priority," I stated, trying to keep my voice even. "We need to secure these civilians first." Peter nodded, already starting to web up the dazed individuals. Gwen and Renamon moved to help, carefully guiding people away from the broken glass and overturned objects. It was slow work, like herding sleepy, confused sheep.
