Chapter 33 - 83 The performance is about to begin

It's starting! It's starting!"

Don't pick me!

Don't pick me!

A cacophony of sounds filled the air, but Lin Fan paid no attention to what they were saying.

He looked at the television with utter astonishment at the antique wooden stage, his eyes widening in shock as he stared at the area below.

The audience seats seemed familiar.

It was a seating area with rows of long benches and tables arranged neatly.

There was no one at the table, only wooden memorial tablets with black backgrounds and red characters placed on long benches.

Some blood-red characters, written in a flowing, dragon-like style, were on the memorial tablet, but Lin Fan couldn't make out a single one.

And those octagonal tables in the teahouse seating area, which used to be used to place tea, peanuts, melon seeds, candied fruits, and snacks.

They were paper ingots made of gold, silver, white, and yellow paper. There were also thick red and white candles, and sticks of incense burning at varying heights.

In the darkness, the incense sticks, their flames flickering at varying heights, dotted among the black memorial tablets and gold and silver ingots, like tiny eyes fixed intently on the stage.

They also looked towards the people behind the stage.

Lin Fan subconsciously looked towards the center of the audience seats.

He then breathed a sigh of relief.

Contrary to his expectations, his family wasn't sitting there; instead, a row of memorial tablets for the deceased was neatly arranged.

He then felt reassured and turned to look at the people in the room.

Inside the private room, several women trembled, their composure and nonchalance from when they were "dead" gone.

Spider sat casually on the sofa, his body trembling slightly, as if he were performing a small-amplitude, rhythmic stool dance.

Looking at the way he would occasionally stick his butt out, Lin Fan even thought he was dancing a modified version of a Korean girl group dance.

The sorceress quietly lit two incense sticks and placed them in the northeast corner of the private room.

Then a white candle was lit in the southeast corner of the private room.

The candle burned with an orange glow, its light flickering erratically in the room, creating an eerie and sinister atmosphere.

Lin Fan put down the microphone, picked up his younger sister, and sat down next to the sorceress.

"Well, have you found anything?" the fortune teller asked in a low voice.

Lin Fan frowned slightly, recalling everything that had happened since he first arrived at Buckingham that morning.

"Before they transform from corpses into living beings, they don't know fear," Lin Fan said slowly, pondering as he spoke.

"There are two reasons why they are afraid: First, their bodies were dead at the time. Dead bodies lack emotions, so even though this so-called 'ghost opera' is something they are extremely afraid of, they do not feel fear because their bodies cannot generate the emotion of fear."

"The second type is somewhat like what happened to us when we were dealing with orphanages."

"Their fear was temporarily taken away before the ghost opera appeared, but after the ghost opera appeared, the fear was released back into their bodies."

"Don't look at me like that. I know it's similar to the first point, but different. The first point is because of their own bodies dying and coming back to life; it's because of themselves. The second point is because of other people, like those memorial tablets placed on the benches waiting to watch the show..."

"And there's a third one."

"At the moment of their death, they forgot the existence of the terrifying event of the ghost opera and forgot the fact that they were dead, continuing to live by instinct and habit. But when the ghost opera event occurred, they came back to life completely and then remembered the ghost opera event. Some fears originating from the ghost opera event made them afraid."

"Of course, we can talk to them about these things and find out more."

After Lin Fan finished speaking, he looked at Chen Qian.

He smiled politely and said, "Hello, may I ask you something?"

8boOk. С0m

Chen Qian, whose body was trembling uncontrollably, suddenly shuddered and looked at Lin Fan.

Her pretty face was deathly pale. She said in a trembling voice, "What do you want to ask?"

Lin Fan smiled again, his expression warm and approachable, like a friendly boy next door: "I want to ask what's going on with this ghost opera? Why are you all suddenly so scared? I saw you weren't scared at all just now?"

"Huh?" Chen Qian was taken aback when she heard Lin Fan say that he wasn't afraid just now.

"Yes, why am I suddenly scared? I'm not scared when I sleep during the day or work at night, I don't know why I'm scared now."

"Don't you remember singing ghost operas?"

"How could that be! I've always remembered this. The ghost opera incident always happens after midnight."

"Those chosen will perform on stage. As long as their performance satisfies the audience, they will live."

"If you're not satisfied, you'll die. The way those people kill is very special. They just tell the person on stage, 'Actually, you're already dead,' and then the chosen person dies instantly. We can't understand the logic behind it."

"The day before yesterday, Lili was selected. During her performance, she was so nervous that she sang two lines off-key. Then the old lady sitting in the third row said that she sang badly and deserved to die, but she had already died long ago."

"And then Lily died... It was terrifying. I couldn't understand it at all."

Recalling how Lili suddenly trembled and collapsed to the ground dead the night before last, Chen Qian couldn't help but tremble.

Chen Fan and the other two exchanged glances, each seeing a question mark in the other's eyes.

Spider chuckled and reached out to embrace the girl in yoga pants who was trembling and praying beside him.

All I could feel was the girl's fragrant scent, her warmth and softness; she was just like a living person.

"Don't be afraid, your big brother will protect you."

Why don't you tell us too?

What happened when he fell to the ground?

The girl in yoga pants just trembled, buried her head in the sofa, and seemed unwilling to communicate, so Spider could only hug another girl next to him.

"Come on, tell me what you have to say. If you do, I'll give you all these silver coins."

He shook the bag of silver coins on the table, making a clattering sound.

"Hmph! Who wants your stinking money? Once you see that ghost show, you'll never leave Buckingham again. What use is your money then? I don't deign to take your money!"

Her words startled Lin Fan, and then he was filled with dread upon closer examination.

so...

Did they forget that they couldn't leave Buckingham when the Spiders chose them a few hours ago?

Or are they simply dedicated to their work and only want to provide emotional support to their boss?

Or perhaps they were acting according to some established pattern of behavior?

A series of doubts welled up in my mind.

Bang! Bang bang!

A strange sound rang out, and Lin Fan looked up to see a blood-red countdown on the television screen.

Ten, Nine, Eight, Seven...

Several girls began to tremble violently.

Lin Fan and the other two had a sudden realization.

The performance is about to begin.

The candidates are being selected.
