Chapter 171 - Owing Favours

The puppets closed in like a vice. Ren's vision swam; the world tilted, the arena walls spinning in a blur of stone and sand. He felt the impact, the sharp bite of steel, but the pain was distant, muffled, as if it belonged to someone else.

He hit the sand. The impact was soft, almost gentle; the poison had numbed him to everything except the slow, creeping darkness at the edges of his vision. He tried to push himself up, to reach for his sword, to continue fighting. His arms would not respond. His body would not obey.

I can't… I can't give up…

The darkness swallowed him.

On the viewing platform, Mariko's expression fractured. Her hand shot out, gripping the railing, her knuckles white.

"Ren!" She stepped forward, ready to jump, to run, to do something.

Satoru's hand closed around her arm. His grip was firm, unyielding. "Wait."

She turned to him, her eyes blazing. "He is down there! He needs help!"

"Let the professionals work." Satoru's voice was calm, but there was a tremor beneath it; the barest fracture in his composure. "Entering now will only interfere. They will get to him."

Mariko's jaw tightened. She wanted to argue, to pull away, to ignore his logic and act on instinct. But she saw the truth in his eyes; he was just as worried as she was, just as afraid, just as angry. He was simply better at hiding it.

She stopped. She forced herself to breathe. She watched the medical-nin rush onto the arena floor, their white coats stark against the sand, their hands already glowing with diagnostic chakra.

The proctor stepped forward, his voice carrying across the arena. "Yamashiro Ren is unable to continue." He paused, letting the silence stretch. "Winner: Kaito Kugutsu of Sunagakure!"

The arena erupted. Suna supporters roared Kaito's name, their cheers echoing off the stone walls. Banners waved; money changed hands; the celebration was immediate and overwhelming. After the disappointments of Mio and Rin, Suna finally had a victory to celebrate.

Satoru watched the crowd, his expression unreadable. He saw the faces; the joy, the pride, the satisfaction. They were not celebrating Kaito's skill; they were celebrating a Konoha loss. They were celebrating the political victory, the restoration of their village's pride.

Is this the Hunger Games or something? he thought, his cynicism rising. The crowd enjoys seeing young shinobi fight each other. Villages treat victories like political wins. The competitors are not just fighting for promotion; they are fighting for village pride.

He thought of Ren; unconscious on the sand, being carried away by medical-nin. He thought of the poison, the hidden puppets, the trap that had been laid from the beginning. Kaito had prepared for this fight; he had studied Ren, anticipated his moves, and created a battlefield that Ren could not win.

Suna wanted a win after losing, Satoru realised. Kaito provided exactly that.

Medical-nin lifted Ren onto a stretcher, their movements efficient, practiced. They checked his vitals, applied antidotes, and began the slow process of stabilising him. Mariko moved toward them, her steps urgent but controlled.

Satoru followed, his Sharingan deactivated, his mind still racing.

They reached the medical area, a tent at the edge of the arena, canvas walls flapping in the dry wind. Ren lay on a cot, his face pale, his breathing shallow but steady. A medical-nin was applying a poultice to his wounds; another was monitoring his chakra levels; a third was preparing an intravenous antidote.

Mariko's voice was tight. "Is he going to be okay?"

The lead medical-nin, a Suna woman with tired eyes and steady hands, looked up. "He is unconscious, but he is not in critical condition. The poison was designed to incapacitate, not kill. We are removing it now. Recovery will take time, but he will recover."

Mariko's shoulders sagged. The tension drained from her; she looked suddenly exhausted, her earlier fury replaced by a bone-deep weariness.

Satoru's voice was quiet. "How long?"

"Several days, at least. The poison has to be flushed from his system. He will be weak for a while, but he will not suffer permanent damage."

Sayuri appeared at the entrance of the tent; beside her stood Sarutobi Taeko, his expression unreadable. They moved to Ren's cot, assessing his condition with the practised eyes of veteran shinobi.

Sayuri turned to the medical-nin. "His treatment?"

The lead medical-nin hesitated. "We are applying standard antidotes. The poison is a Suna puppet poison; we have the most experience with it."

Taeko's voice was flat. "I will oversee the situation. I want to ensure he is properly treated."

Sayuri's gaze flickered to him. "Can you not handle the poison yourself?"

Taeko shook his head slowly. "The poison is derived from Suna techniques. Suna medical-nin have more experience with it. Interfering could create complications." He paused. "I will observe. I will ensure their treatment is appropriate. But I will not interfere."

Satoru observed the exchange silently.

Then why did they come? he wondered. If they cannot help directly, why are they here?

The announcer's voice echoed across the arena, cutting through the murmurs of the crowd. "Final match of the first round! Hana Akari of Kusagakure versus Yamanaka Satoru of Konohagakure!"

Satoru's heart rate ticked up. He had known this was coming; the bracket had been set, and his name had been called. But the timing felt wrong, somehow. Ren was injured. The team was fractured.

Sayuri turned to him. "Go. Do your best. Ren will be fine."

Satoru hesitated. His gaze drifted to Ren's unconscious form, to the medical-nin still working over him, to the pale face of his teammate. He did not want to leave. He wanted to stay, to watch, to ensure that Ren would recover.

But this was his match. The team needed him to continue. Mariko had advanced. Ren had fallen. He was the last chance for Team Five to secure a place in the next round.

He nodded, turned, and walked toward the arena.

The sand was warm beneath his sandals; the air was thick with anticipation. Satoru walked across the arena floor, his steps unhurried, his Sharingan flickering to life. The crowd's reaction was immediate; hostile, angry, cutting.

"The genjutsu coward!" someone shouted. "Fight properly this time!"

"Don't hide behind tricks!" another voice called. "You should have let Mio fight!"

Satoru ignored them. He had expected the hostility; Suna fans were still angry about his victory over Mio, about the genjutsu that had ended the fight before it truly began. They saw him as the reason their people had lost, as the outsider who had humiliated their representative.

They are lucky I am not facing one of their genin, he thought.

He looked at the crowd, at the faces twisted with anger and disappointment. He thought of Ren, unconscious on a cot; of Kaito, celebrating his victory; of the Suna supporters cheering their home team's success.

Actually, he corrected himself. I would prefer it. Kaito injured Ren. Suna celebrated. Part of me wants to repay that favour. I owe them.

He pushed the thought aside. Anger was a weapon, but it was also a liability. He could not afford to fight with his emotions; he needed precision, control, efficiency.

Hana Akari was already waiting.

Satoru stopped a few meters away.

The proctor raised his hand. The crowd fell silent; the air grew thick with anticipation.

"Begin!"
