Chapter 86 - Chapter 86: He Lied and Still Tried to Defend Himself

Xiaoji was taking a shower in the bathroom when his phone, placed on the nightstand, buzzed several times with WeChat notifications.

The other party seemed frantic, sending one message after another—the notification sounds rang six or seven times in a row. They must have had something urgent.

She glanced at the bathroom, hearing the water still running. Xiaoji probably wouldn't be out for a while, so she reached for his phone.

Suddenly, a phone call came through. She picked it up and saw the contact name: "Xiao Shen."

She swiped to answer, but before she could speak, a female Homo sapiens' voice, choked with sobs, came through the line.

"Darling, I've sent you so many messages. Why aren't you replying? Come quickly—something's happened here. There's a fight, a whole group of Homo sapiens. Please hurry, I'm so scared of Homo sapiens... Wuwu... Come now, they're about to smash the escape room!"

Before she could respond, the call ended abruptly.

That female Homo sapiens—what could have happened? Calling so late at night must mean it was urgent.

The escape room—that female Homo sapiens' escape room. She quickly memorized the number.

Suqing recalled the address Ranran had given her earlier. Sitting on the bed, she pondered for a long time. What could be happening over there? Judging by the panic in that female Homo sapiens' voice, it couldn't be anything minor.

Xiaoji would probably head over soon. Before leaving for abroad, she'd already known about the escape room he'd opened for that female Homo sapiens, but she hadn't had the chance to visit yet. With everything going on these past few days, she hadn't paid it much mind. Now, she wanted to know what was really happening there. She decided to follow Xiaoji.

Her father-in-law was sitting in the living room watching TV. If she left right after Xiaoji, he might grow suspicious.

Restless, she lay on the bed. The sound of a hairdryer came from the bathroom—Xiaoji had finished showering and would be out soon.

Suddenly, she thought of Shutong. Shutong had said to reach out anytime if she needed help.

She sent Shutong a WeChat message.

Suqing:What are you up to?

Shutong replied immediately: Nothing much, just watching TV with a Homo sapiens.

Suqing:If you're free, could you do me a favor?

Shutong:What is it?

Suqing:I'll send you an address. Go there later and see what's happening. I can't leave right now.

Shutong:Send it over. I'll head there right away.

Suqing:Remember, no matter what happens, don't make a sound. Just observe.

Suqing:I want you to find out what's really going on there. It's some kind of game hall or escape room he opened for that female Homo sapiens outside. Go check—it seems like something's gone wrong.

Shutong:On my way. Don't worry, I've got this.

A mischievous smirk emoji.

Suqing:He'll definitely go there soon too. I need to know what's happening. Try to find evidence of his affair if possible.

Shutong:Got it. Mission guaranteed.

A cheering emoji.

Suqing:Don't message me afterward. We'll talk at the office tomorrow.

Shutong:OK emoji.

Just as she sent the last message, Xiaoji stepped out of the bathroom. She quickly switched her phone to another app.

Feigning nonchalance, she said, "You got a call earlier. It rang for a while, so I answered since you were in the shower."

"What call?"

"A female Homo sapiens. She sounded really upset, almost crying. You should call her back."

Xiaoji hurried to the nightstand and picked up his charging phone. The moment he saw the screen, his expression darkened.

He turned to Suqing, his face stiff with forced calm. "What did she say?"

Suqing studied him. He was clearly flustered but trying to hide it. His eyes flickered nervously, his face flushed, yet he forced a smile.

"She said you need to go somewhere urgently. I didn't catch the details, but it sounded like something happened. Her tone was frantic!"

Suqing stared at him intently, waiting to see how he'd spin this lie.

Xiaoji's gaze wavered briefly, a flicker of panic crossing his slender eyes.

He shook his head quickly, regaining his composure.

With a solemn expression, he said, "Suqing, don't overthink it. She's just a female colleague from work. There's nothing between us. The boss wanted us to work overtime tonight, but I've been exhausted from all the late nights, so I came home early. Maybe something happened at the office. I'll go check it out. You should rest."

"Not many Homo sapiens were scheduled for overtime tonight—just two female Homo sapiens. If something's wrong, I can't just ignore it, right?"

He gave her a reassuring look, seeming less tense now, as if convinced he'd smoothed things over.

In the past, Suqing would have believed every word he said. But this time, she averted her gaze, her face unreadable.

The more expressionless she was, the harder it became for him to decipher what this female Homo sapiens was really thinking.
