A soft knock sounds at the door to Catherine's chambers, and she jumps, startled.
"Your Highness," Emily's voice comes from the door, and she bids her in.
Emily enters quietly, her head bowed, not daring to look up at Catherine's face.
She has been moody and has only stayed indoors for a few days now without stepping out of the room.
Emily thought it was because of the humiliation she faced at the King's quarters, but she also ordered Kenneth never to appear in front of her and punished him to stand in the sun every day.
"You haven't touched your meals for days now," Emily says as she sets the tray in her hands on the table.
Catherine glances at the warm bread, stewed fruit, and a cup of watered wine but doesn't touch it.
"Your Highness," she calls again, but Catherine refuses to answer and simply stares into space.
Emily sighs, seeing there is nothing she can do to bring her out of her daze, and decides to talk about something else.
