Chapter 4 - The Shattered Veil

The harbor was filled with smoke and waves when the figure of white fire stood tall before the gate. His light cut through the dark, pushing the shadows back like a storm chased by dawn. Elias and Mira shielded their eyes. The hooded ones who had called the darkness stepped back, fear breaking through their bold masks.

The figure turned his head, and for the first time, they saw his face. His features were sharp, his eyes like burning stars. His voice carried both calm and command.

"My name is Kael," he said. "And this gate will not take our world."

At his words, the glow around him grew brighter. The monster clawing through the crack screeched in pain, pulling back into the shadows. But the gate itself remained, pulsing like a living wound. The hooded leader raised his arms again, desperate to hold the passage open.

Kael spread his hands wide. "Not tonight," he whispered. His voice was soft, but the force behind it struck like thunder.

From the sky above, streaks of light fell. One by one, more figures appeared, each landing with fire at their feet. A woman with hair like silver flame. A tall man whose skin gleamed like stone. A cloaked figure moving so fast the eye could not follow. They were Kael's allies, his team.

Mira gasped. She had never seen so many of their kind together. Elias's eyes narrowed with both hope and caution.

Kael lifted his arm toward the crack. "Together."

The team raised their hands, their power joining his. The silver-haired woman called winds that screamed like a thousand storms. The stone-skinned man struck the earth, shaking the dock and sending cracks racing toward the gate. The cloaked one blurred, cutting through the shadows like a blade.

The gate shook. The monster roared, caught between two worlds. The hooded figures screamed as the force of light pressed against their dark call. One by one, they fell to their knees, their hoods falling back to reveal pale, twisted faces.

Still, the gate held.

Then Mira felt it. A faint cry, almost lost beneath the noise. She turned her head, following the sound. Near the farthest dock, half hidden by broken crates, a man was tied in chains. His body was marked with burns, his eyes dim with exhaustion.

"Elias," she cried, pointing. "Someone is trapped!"

Elias rushed forward, his glow flaring. The chains around the man sparked with strange marks, holding him tight. Elias pressed his hands to the links, burning them away. As the last chain fell, the man collapsed into his arms.

"Dev," Elias said.

The man's lips moved, dry and broken. "They… used me," he whispered. "My blood fed the gate. My strength kept it open."

Kael turned sharply, his eyes fierce. "If he was the key, then breaking his chains will end it."

At once, the glow around the gate began to flicker. The monster howled, slamming against the barrier, but without Dev's life to hold it, the crack shuddered and began to close. Kael and his team pressed harder, their powers blazing. Mira joined them, pouring every drop of her strength into the light.

With a scream that shook the city, the gate collapsed in on itself, folding into nothingness. The sky cleared, and the waves stilled. Only the broken docks and fallen bodies of the hooded ones remained.

Silence fell, heavy and strange after the storm of sound. The team lowered their hands, breathing hard. Kael looked to Elias and Mira, then to the weak man they held.

"Is he Dev?" Kael asked.

Elias nodded. "Yes. He was their prisoner. They nearly killed him."

Kael knelt beside Dev, his fire dimming to a soft glow. "Dev, where is Arin?"

The name hung in the air. Mira felt her chest tighten, though she did not know why. Dev opened his eyes slowly. Pain and fear flickered in them.

"Arin…" His voice was rough, each word pulled from broken lungs. "I do not know where he is. They spoke of him, yes. They said he was the true prize. But listen to me, Kael…"

Kael leaned closer, his eyes sharp. "Tell me."

Dev coughed, forcing the words out. "We have a greater problem. Do you not see? Our fight was not hidden. The gate, the monster, the light… the city saw it all. Every soul in this place now knows we are not like them. The veil is gone. The world has seen us."

Mira looked around. At the edge of the docks, people had gathered. Men, women, and children stood frozen in fear, their faces pale, their eyes wide. They had watched it all-the glowing hands, the storm of fire, the monster's claw.

The whispers began, soft but spreading. "What are they?" "Are they demons?" "Are they gods?" Fear spread like fire across dry grass.

Elias straightened, his face grim. "They know."

Kael rose, his gaze moving over the crowd. His team gathered close, their eyes tense. The silver-haired woman whispered, "We cannot fight them. Not if they fear us."

The stone-skinned man rumbled, "Fear will turn to hate. And hate will call for our blood."

The crowd began to move closer. Some shouted questions. Others cried out in fear. A few lifted stones and sticks.

Kael closed his eyes. "Then we leave them no fear."

He raised both hands, and his team joined him. A wave of light burst from their bodies, bright but soft, washing over the crowd. It was not fire, not force, but a calm glow that carried safety and peace. The people gasped as the light touched them. Their fear faded, their anger stilled. One by one, they closed their eyes and fell into a gentle sleep where they stood.

The docks grew silent, lined with sleeping figures. The city would not burn with panic tonight.

Mira watched in awe. "You put them to sleep?"

Kael nodded. His face was tired now, his glow dim. "It is the only way to move without blood. They will wake, but by then, we will be gone."

Dev clung weakly to Elias, his voice a whisper. "Kael… the world saw too much. Sleep cannot hide it. When they wake, they will remember. And they will not forget."

Mira felt a chill run through her. For the first time, she wished she could return to the shadows. But that choice was gone.

Somewhere out there, Arin was still missing. And now the whole world knew they existed.

Elias stepped forward, his face calm though his eyes carried fire. He looked at Kael, Mira, and the broken city around them.

"Maybe I can solve this problem," he said.

No one noticed that in the chaos, the three hooded figures had slipped into the shadows and vanished into hiding.
