After settling arrangements for Kirby of the Stars, Nakayama Takuya did not slow down.
Conquering Sunrise Animation was only one crucial step in his grand plan to build a massive entertainment empire.
Naturally, this made him think of another key cornerstone in his hands—Pokémon.
Sunrise had Gundam, the pinnacle of mecha animation, which in the future could form a perfect closed-loop industry chain with SEGA's arcade mecha games and model kits.
And Pokémon—that was his other ace capable of going head-to-head with Nintendo and sweeping the world.
He had to strengthen both fronts.
A mature IP empire needed not only a steady stream of new works, but also a stable, expansive, and internally consistent worldview as its backbone. Only then could an IP perpetually grow on its own.
This backbone was the Mythical Beast System.
The UC timeline of Gundam was already excellent and only required later discussions with Director Tomino to adjust or refine certain elements. But the mythical beast system of Pokémon, in his previous life's early development, had left many regrets and contradictions.
Now was the time to correct the course—to rebuild the Pokémon Mythical Beast System from the very beginning.
He dialed the number of the animation studio GALLOP and directly contacted Director Yuyama Kunihiko, who was in charge of the Pokémon movies.
"Director Yuyama, this is Nakayama Takuya. I have an idea regarding the second movie. I'd like to discuss it with you in person."
On the other end, Yuyama was stunned, almost flattered.
This SEGA executive—now a near-mythical figure in the industry—was offering to personally discuss the details of a film?
"Nakayama-san! You're too polite. You're welcome anytime!"
When Takuya stepped into GALLOP's studio, Yuyama practically jogged over to welcome him.
"Nakayama-san, please take a look. These are the initial concept designs we made for The Birth of Lugia based on your previous guidance."
He led Takuya to a wall covered with concept art and pointed to one particularly imposing illustration.
In it, the colossal Lugia burst from the ocean, raising massive waves as the three legendary birds circled around it, divine might radiating from their presence.
"We've positioned it as the 'Sea God,' the absolute ruler of the ocean," Yuyama said proudly.
Takuya silently observed the artwork without immediately responding.
Everyone in the studio held their breath, anxious for the verdict of this legendary producer.
Only after a long moment did Takuya speak, his voice calm yet cutting through the air.
"Director Yuyama, let me ask you something."
"If Lugia is the 'Sea God,' then what are Moltres, Zapdos, and Articuno—the embodiments of fire, lightning, and ice? In front of it, aren't they just subordinates?"
Yuyama froze, then instinctively nodded. "In terms of divine hierarchy… yes, I suppose so."
"Then where is the tension in our story?"
Takuya's eyes sharpened.
"An all-knowing, all-powerful ruler who can end the conflict with a wave of its hand—audiences will find that predictable. There's no tension, no sense of fate."
"We cannot use the gods themselves as the selling point. It must be the story—the characters."
The words struck Yuyama like lightning. Sweat beaded on his forehead.
He had been focused only on portraying Lugia's strength, forgetting drama's core—conflict.
"T-then, what do you propose…?"
"Lugia should not be the 'Sea God'."
Takuya answered without hesitation.
He picked up a red pencil and began sketching on the whiteboard beside the art.
He first drew three simple bird silhouettes representing Articuno, Moltres, and Zapdos.
"They represent the elements of nature themselves—the foundations that shape the world's climate and environment. Articuno provides ice. Moltres melts the ice into water. Zapdos electrifies water and nearby atmospheric elements to form complex organic molecules—this should be the origin environment of life in the Pokémon world. Among them, there is no hierarchy—only balance."
Then he drew swirling arrows beneath them.
"And Lugia is not the ruler of the sea. It is the god of ocean currents, the regulator of balance."
"Its role is not to command the three birds, but to guide them back into harmony when they spiral out of control—by sounding its Song of Life, restoring equilibrium, and calming the currents of the world. It's a lonely guardian, a great mediator."
He put the pencil down and looked at the contemplative Yuyama.
"This gives the three birds' conflict the weight to destroy the world. And Lugia's appearance is no longer a deus-ex-machina overpowering them, but a tragic, epic struggle to restore balance."
"Being a Sea God means authority.
Being the God of Currents means responsibility."
The entire studio fell silent.
Everyone was shaken by the grand, elegant concept Takuya had outlined.
This wasn't a simple adjustment—this was a restructuring of the story's very soul.
Shock gradually gave way to awe in Yuyama's eyes.
He looked at this young man as though gazing up at a towering mountain.
"I understand—I completely understand!" Yuyama bowed deeply. "Nakayama-san, you've opened an entirely new door for us!"
"And behind that door lies a complete world," Takuya smiled, showing his true intention.
"Director Yuyama, I want to use this setting as the foundation to build an entire Pokémon Mythology Universe."
"In the previous film, Mewtwo Strikes Back, we left a clue with Ho-Oh's feather. Ho-Oh represents life."
"And Lugia and the three birds represent environment."
"Life and environment—these form the basis of a world's birth. In the future, we can introduce mythical beasts that create land and sea… ones governing time, space, and antimatter… ones overseeing the cycle of life and death… beasts of light and darkness… even gods embodying human philosophy and the collision of ideals. All of these can enrich the Pokémon world's logic and thematic depth, filling this universe step by step."
"I need someone who can understand and execute this grand vision."
Takuya's gaze locked on Yuyama, unwavering and sincere.
"I officially invite you, as an external consultant, to join SEGA Galaxy's Children of the Star Ring creative division—as one of the chief architects of the Pokémon Mythical Beast System."
Yuyama was stunned speechless.
This meant binding him forever to a world-class IP—making him one of the creators of Pokémon's mythological universe.
"I—I accept!"
His voice trembled as he gripped Takuya's hand tightly.
"Nakayama-san, it would be my honor!"
