A crow perched on the crumbling wall of a desolate ruin. Its feathers, cast in the dim light, took on a sickly, ashen-gray hue.
Weathered runes were carved into the stone pillars of the ruins, where weeds stubbornly pushed through the cracks. The crow bent its head, pecking at the rotting flesh of a corpse below.
The speakers crackled with the sickening sound of tearing flesh, accompanied by the howl of wind whistling through the broken brick walls.
The camera panned.
A warrior in heavy armor trudged through the darkness. His armor was scored with scratches, and dried blood stained his pauldrons, robbing the metal of its luster. The blade of his longsword was jaggedly notched.
He held the sword at the ready, his gaze sweeping the surroundings with wary intensity.
In the shadows lurked an indescribable monster. Its heavy, guttural breathing resonated with a powerful subwoofer effect, sending a numbing vibration through the chests of the journalists in the press section.
The scene shifted to a forest of withered trees. The soil beneath them was a grotesque, dark crimson, squelching underfoot.
Bodies hung from the branches, swaying in the wind. The ropes creaked as they rubbed against the trunks. From deep underground, the agonized shrieks of demons echoed continuously.
David stopped writing, his eyes glued to the screen.
This was a complete departure from Blizzard's usual art style—the bright, American cartoonish aesthetic they were known for.
The entire cinematic was a masterfully crafted horror film, radiating a sense of isolation, oppression, and dread.
By 1996 standards, the CG animation successfully forged a Cthulhu-esque cult style with immense visual impact.
During production, the Development Team had provided the Animation Department with no clear storyline. The game's own design was still undergoing frequent revisions, and the script outline was merely a crude sketch of a hero descending into a dungeon to fight demons.
The animators had to rely on a few original concept sketches to create a conceptual opening cinematic. This explained the abundance of ambiguous shots throughout the film. No specific villain ever showed their face; there was only an omnipresent sense of dread.
Finally, the game's title emerged on the big screen in dark red, the letters' edges jagged and worn: Diablo.

The reaction from the press was mixed. Everyone had expected Blizzard to unveil a sci-fi themed or mechanically innovative RTS game to challenge Red Alert directly. Instead, Blizzard had completely avoided a head-on confrontation and carved out an entirely new path.
The sense of anticlimax lasted only a few seconds.
The screen began playing the Diablo gameplay demo, and the media's attention was immediately captivated.

Before being acquired by Blizzard, Condor Studios' founder insisted on turn-based combat.
Deeply influenced by early computer games and tabletop gaming, he believed turn-based combat gave players ample time to strategize.
After Blizzard Headquarters acquired Condor and renamed it Blizzard North, they vehemently demanded the game be changed to real-time.
A fierce argument erupted between the two sides.
Blizzard Headquarters' logic was crystal clear: PC platform performance was advancing rapidly, and players craved more direct, exhilarating feedback. Turn-based combat would drag down the game's pace.
Ultimately, the development team relented.
The moment they first changed the code from turn-based to real-time, and watched the warrior on the screen swing his sword and shatter a skeleton with a single mouse click, everyone realized Blizzard was right.
This visceral, real-time feedback, paired with the crisp sound effects, created an addictive magic.
"They're not making an RTS," Paul said, adjusting his glasses as he watched the demo on the big screen, a hint of surprise in his voice.
David nodded in agreement. "They're avoiding the red ocean and innovating in a new genre. A point-and-click ARPG has an incredibly low barrier to entry. Blizzard is simplifying. Warcraft: Orcs & Humans used grid hotkeys to reduce the operational burden; now, Diablo has streamlined action game controls down to a single left mouse click. This is another reshaping of PC player habits."
"Look at the red and blue orb UI design," Paul pointed to the bottom of the screen. "It's so intuitive. Players don't have to take their eyes off the main game screen to find the status bar. Blizzard's interaction design is getting deeper and more sophisticated. This design philosophy is similar to the guidance mechanisms Nintendo showcased in Super Mario 64—both are striving to minimize the player's cognitive load."
On stage, Mike Morhaime continued his presentation.
"In addition to single-player exploration, we are developing an all-new online matchmaking system," Mike Morhaime announced, his voice rising in volume. "We call it Battle.net. Players will no longer need to manually enter IP addresses, be limited to the same local area network, or rely on third-party battle platforms. As long as your computer is connected to the Internet, you can log into Battle.net and instantly find players from all over the world to form a party and enter dungeons together."
This statement caused a genuine stir in the audience.
In 1996, the Internet was in the pioneering era of dial-up.
Most PC games' online play was still at the local area network IPX protocol level. To play over a wide area network, players had to use paid third-party software like Kali, a process that was cumbersome and plagued by extremely unstable connections.
