The late afternoon sun bathed Konoha's cobblestone streets in a warm golden light as Raven, Ino, and Naruto walked side by side, their shopping bags swinging in rhythm. Yumi trailed behind them, her nine white tails drifting softly in the breeze. It was a rare, peaceful moment—until Naruto suddenly stopped, his head moving towards the other end of the street. His eyes narrowed. "Wait a second…" he said.
Down the street, a boy with dark, brooding eyes approached with his mother. His navy-blue shirt and matching shorts were crisp and neat, his black hair perfectly trimmed. Behind him, Mikoto Uchiha carried a small shopping bag, her warm smile radiating grace.
Ino followed Naruto's gaze. "Why are you staring at that kid like that, Naruto?"
Naruto's glare deepened. "Because… he's my arch-nemesis."
Raven turned to him, half in disbelief. "You have an arch-nemesis at your age?"
"I don't know why," Naruto said, pointing dramatically, "but every time I look at that kid in blue, I just know he's my greatest rival—and my future best friend."
Raven blinked, trying to stifle a laugh, while Ino covered her mouth, her shoulders trembling.
Across the street, Sasuke Uchiha's dark eyes met Naruto's. For a long moment, the two stared at each other as if some ancient, unspoken rivalry has already begun between them. Then Sasuke tugged lightly on his mother's sleeve. "Mom, let's go over there for a second."
"All right, dear," Mikoto said with an indulgent smile as they crossed the street.
Naruto straightened up, tension radiating from him as Sasuke stopped directly in front of him. "Sasuke Uchiha! We meet again," Naruto declared.
Sasuke raised an eyebrow. "Naruto Uzumaki. You're not wearing your usual orange tracksuit. What's going on? You've got… a T-shirt with pizza on it."
Naruto panicked instantly, his arms flailing. "It wasn't my idea! She made me do it! She bought it, so I'm obligated to wear it!" He pointed his finger at Raven.
Sasuke turned his calm, steady gaze to her. "You're Raven?"
Raven nodded lightly. "Guilty as charged."
Behind Sasuke, Mikoto laughed softly. Her voice carried warmth that seemed to brighten the street. "Aren't you two adorable little girls. What are your names?"
"I'm Raven Kamazaki," Raven said politely. "And this is my new friend, Ino."
"Hi, Mrs. Uchiha!" Ino added cheerfully. "I'm Ino Yamanaka. I'm friends with Naruto and Raven."
Naruto's face scrunched up. "Friends? You were bullying me earlier!"
Ino turned bright red. "Shut up, or I'll clobber you!"
Both boys instinctively took a step back.
"She's terrifying," Sasuke said under his breath.
"Agreed," Naruto whispered quickly.
Mikoto laughed so hard she nearly dropped her shopping bag. "Oh my goodness! This is first thing you two have ever agreed on! I thought you two were arch-rivals for life."
Naruto crossed his arms, pretending to be offended. "Who's agreeing with him? I—uh—wait, what was I saying again?"
"You were saying you didn't want to agree with Sasuke," Raven said, one eyebrow raised, "but your brain gave up halfway through."
"Yeah… something like that," Naruto mumbled.
Raven, Ino, and Mikoto all burst out laughing. Even Sasuke's stoic expression softened as a faint trace of amusement crossed his features.
"I'm glad Naruto's made some friends," Mikoto said warmly. "I try to bring Sasuke to see him once in a while. They've grown up together, you know. For some reason, Sasuke thinks Naruto's his rival. I've never understood why—but I'm just happy they get along, even if they fight all the time."
Sasuke frowned, his small hands sliding into his pockets. "Who says I'm friends with Naruto, Mom?"
"Oh, are you embarrassed," Mikoto said, giving him a playful look. "Of course you're friends! What else do you call someone you're constantly arguing with? That's friendship."
"I don't consider him a friend," Sasuke pouted saying.
Naruto's eyes flared with determination. "That's right! I'm your rival, Sasuke Uchiha! I'll be the greatest shinobi—and Hokage—this village has ever seen! You'll be left in my dust!"
Sasuke looked unimpressed. "You can't even perform a basic Transformation Jutsu."
Naruto deflated instantly. "No need to rub it in."
Mikoto chuckled. "Don't worry, Naruto. You've got plenty of time to learn before the Academy starts."
Raven stepped forward slightly, her tone calm and assured. "Actually, I'm going to be training these two—helping them learn to use their techniques properly."
"Really?" Mikoto asked, interest showing in her expression. She studied Raven closely, eyes narrowing slightly as if trying to recall something. "Raven… have we met before somewhere?"
Raven shook her head quickly. "No, Mrs. Uchiha. I think I'd remember if I met you before."
