~~~ [START]
Ash's eyes widened as his head shot up. He moved the bedcovers to the side, breathing heavily from fatigue. Sweat dropped like an ocean.
He closed his eyes, focusing, taking control.
Then, it all stopped. He shook his head, running his hand through his hair, pushing back the small droplets of sweat atop it.
Ash turned immediately, moving his hand to the side of his pillow and pulling out a notebook.
He opened it without a second thought, taking the pen that hung on its side. Moving to one of the half-written pages, he wrote the words:
"Zarethar kharn-esh velth solun."
Something a mysterious man in his dreams had been repeating to him over the past week like a chant.
Ash then drew a line, separating the words from the rest of the page. In the new section, his pen hesitated, completely halted from descending. But with the drain of time, the pen finally dropped, its ink embracing the white.
"Bound. Mark. Curses. We. Alone," he whispered, ink following behind, translating every word. But something about it just didn't make sense.
It took a second or two for him to gather his thoughts.
CRECK!
He stretched the translation out, drawing a line below it.
"The mark curses us alone…" he whispered. The pen followed his words. "'Bound…?'" he thought, the last word proving difficult to write.
So, Ash shook his head, returning the book beneath the pillow, then immediately climbed off the bed and headed to the bathroom that very instant.
He didn't care whether he had gotten enough sleep. It didn't matter that he had awoken too early.
Because for an immortal, what was sleep if not a pleasure?
{Hours Later}
KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK!
"Ash?" Enid said, clearly taken aback. "What… what are you doing here?"
Ash smiled awkwardly, brushing the back of his head.
"Eh…" he started, but his voice was cut mid-motion.
"Enid, close the door," Wednesday said, standing at the far back, walking out from the bathroom.
She paused, looking toward Ash.
"Why are you just standing there?" she questioned, causing Ash to giggle and immediately walk in, making his way to the darker side of the room, where a whiteboard filled with pictures of frozen human flesh hung unfiltered.
"You actually went through with it…" Ash's eyes turned to it, each picture placed in order, lines spreading between them like the investigation of a crime scene. "Impressive."
"Mystery awaits no one," Wednesday replied with absolute conviction, walking forward and grabbing a few pictures from the board as she moved toward Ash.
Wednesday handed him a photo, and Ash raised his brow, clearly confused by what he was looking at.
"The monster's collecting body parts," she said, handing him more pictures one by one, "Each time he commits a murder, something from the body is always surgically removed."
"Okay…" Enid, who was witnessing the commotion, said. "I guess this is my cue to leave." She moved to the door, her pace quickened, feeling as though she was about to pass out.
THUD!
The door shut behind her, leaving Ash still fixating on the picture of a man named Joe, who ironically was missing a toe.
'It rhymes,' Ash thought to himself, immediately being snapped out of it by his wife, or, in some way, the person who was expected to be.
"I don't get it," Ash said, looking at her as she stared right at him. "What do you want…"
"Trail Xavier," she suddenly said, causing his brows to furrow, completely stunned.
"What?…"
"Just do it," she shot in. "Find me when you get something."
She then moved to her bed, grabbed her bag, and walked to the door.
She paused, halting completely but not even bothering to glance back.
"I expect results."
THUD!
The door shut behind her, leaving Ash alone in a room he didn't belong in.
He sighed, shaking his head, slightly mocking his own predicament.
And just like the rest of them, he also left, unaware that his steps were being observed by a creeping hand.
One who knew most of what he had hidden.
One that saw him commit the unthinkable.
One that had witnessed him… as he fought an abomination.
{Hours Later}
Ash sighed as his hands moved the leaves of a bush obstructing his sight.
And right there, walking out of what looked to be an abandoned cottage, was Xavier, who was looking around before leaving.
Ash just shook his head, standing there waiting perhaps a couple of seconds too long, and then he approached.
Moving from the bush, he pushed the cottage door wide open.
Ash nearly sneezed from the dust the door produced. But all actions were immediately interrupted as his eyes turned to the paintings surrounding him.
"Frankenstein," Ash said in a whisper, completely stunned to the ground.
He couldn't be wrong; its face was almost unmistakable.
So, he moved forward, switching on the light suspended at the center.
TWITCH!
And as it lit, about fifteen paintings of Frankenstein came into view, all drawn from different angles, sides, and measurements.
"Ash?" Xavier suddenly opened the door, finding Ash standing right before him. "What are you doing here…"
"Shit, man, you gotta take this down," Ash cut in, turning his head toward him. "All of it."
