Chapter 4 - CHAPTER 4: The Point of No Return

And this time—

when they moved—

it wasn't slow.

It happened all at once.

Three figures closed the distance between them in a blink, their movements sharp and precise, like they had been waiting for that exact moment to act.

"Move!" his aunt snapped.

William didn't hesitate.

Not because he was brave.

But because something in him had already started moving before the command reached his ears.

The world shifted.

Again.

But not the same way.

Not shallow.

Not instinctive.

This time—

it pulled him deeper.

The first strike came from his left.

He didn't see it.

He felt it.

A disturbance.

Like something trying to force its way into a space that no longer existed.

He stepped—

and slipped.

The attack passed through empty air.

The second came immediately after.

Faster.

Cleaner.

Closer.

William moved again.

But it wasn't movement in the normal sense.

He wasn't dodging.

He wasn't reacting.

He was… not there.

For a fraction of a second—

he existed somewhere else.

Then he dropped back into place, stumbling slightly.

"…Okay," he breathed. "That's definitely getting worse."

"Focus," his aunt said, blocking another strike. "Don't let it take you too far."

"I still don't know what that means!"

Another attack.

This one aimed straight for him.

William's heart kicked hard in his chest.

Not fear.

Not exactly.

Something sharper.

Awareness.

He felt it again—

that strange space.

That thin gap between moments.

Like the world was made of frames, and he was slipping between them.

"…I see it," he muttered.

"What?" his aunt asked.

"I don't know—but I see something."

He moved again.

This time not blindly.

Not entirely.

He stepped—

and the world dulled.

Sound faded.

Light softened.

Everything slowed—

but not because time had slowed.

Because he wasn't fully part of it anymore.

The Hunter's hand passed through where he had been.

William exhaled sharply as he snapped back.

"…Yeah," he said under his breath. "Still hate that."

The Hunters stopped.

Not completely.

But enough.

Watching him.

Adjusting.

"They're learning," his aunt said.

"Great. So now it's a study session."

"Stay alive."

"Working on it!"

For a brief moment, there was space.

Not safety.

Just a pause.

William steadied himself, breathing uneven.

His hand pulsed again.

Stronger.

More consistent.

Not random anymore.

"…It's not reacting to them," he said quietly.

His aunt didn't respond immediately.

"…No," she said.

"It's reacting to you."

"That's worse."

"Yes."

A shift.

Subtle.

But immediate.

The Hunters stepped back.

All at once.

Creating distance.

William felt it before he saw it.

That pressure again.

Not physical.

Something deeper.

Something that made the air feel heavier without actually changing it.

"…Yeah," he muttered. "I know what that means now."

"Stay still," his aunt said quietly.

"I don't think that's an option."

"It is."

"Not for me."

A voice cut through the silence.

"Enough."

Everything stopped.

Not slowed.

Stopped.

The Hunters didn't move.

Didn't react.

Didn't even breathe, as far as William could tell.

They simply… ceased.

William turned slowly.

The figure stepped forward.

Same calm presence.

Same controlled movement.

But now—

closer.

Clearer.

And far more dangerous.

"…You again," William said.

No response.

The figure's gaze settled on him.

Heavy.

Measured.

"You adapt quickly," it said.

William let out a small breath.

"…I wish I didn't."

"That won't change the outcome."

"Yeah, I figured."

The figure took one step closer.

And the world reacted.

Not violently.

Not dramatically.

But noticeably.

Like something invisible had tightened around them.

William felt it immediately.

That same pull—

but stronger.

More direct.

"…I don't like this part," he said quietly.

"You're not supposed to," the figure replied.

William almost laughed.

"…That's becoming a pattern."

No reaction.

Of course.

The figure raised its hand slightly.

And instantly—

everything shifted.

Not around him.

Through him.

William's breath caught.

"…Wait—"

The world snapped.

Sound vanished.

Completely.

Not muted.

Not lowered.

Gone.

The street remained.

The shapes remained.

But everything felt… wrong.

Like reality had been peeled back just enough to expose something underneath.

William couldn't hear his own breathing.

Couldn't feel the air in his lungs.

And for the first time—

he wasn't the one entering that space.

He had been forced into it.

The figure stood there.

Unchanged.

Unaffected.

Watching him.

"You rely on instinct," its voice reached him—not through sound, but directly.

William tried to speak.

Nothing came out.

"You move without understanding."

The space around him tightened.

Not physically.

Conceptually.

Like he didn't fully belong there.

"You will break."

That word again.

Break.

Something inside him reacted.

Sharply.

Like rejection.

And suddenly—

something pushed back.

Not controlled.

Not intentional.

But real.

The space cracked.

A ripple spread outward.

Subtle—

but enough.

The figure paused.

For the first time—

it hesitated.

"…Interesting," it said.

The hold weakened.

Just slightly.

Enough.

William moved.

Not cleanly.

Not smoothly.

But forcefully.

He pulled himself out of that space—

and slammed back into reality.

Sound returned all at once.

Air rushed into his lungs.

He staggered, catching himself.

"…Yeah," he gasped. "That's worse."

Silence followed.

Real silence this time.

The Hunters hadn't moved.

But their focus had changed.

Not testing anymore.

Not observing.

Caution.

William noticed it.

"…Okay," he muttered. "That's new."

His aunt stepped closer to him.

"Don't do that again."

"I didn't do anything!"

"You pushed back."

"I was trying not to die!"

"That wasn't survival."

William didn't argue.

Because deep down—

he knew she was right.

The figure lowered its hand.

The pressure vanished.

Instantly.

"You're unstable," it said.

William exhaled.

"…Not the first time I've heard that tonight."

"You've crossed a boundary."

"I don't even know where the boundary is."

"You will."

"…Of course I will."

A pause.

Then—

"You're not ready."

William let out a weak laugh.

"…Yeah, no argument there."

The figure studied him for a moment longer.

Then—

it stepped back.

Not forward.

Back.

William frowned.

"…Wait."

The Hunters moved with it.

Matching the shift.

"You've been confirmed," the figure said.

That word again.

Confirmed.

"…Confirmed as what?" William asked.

A brief pause.

Then:

"A disruption."

William stared.

"…That sounds like your problem."

"It is."

A beat.

"It will become yours."

The figure turned.

Just like that.

No warning.

No threat.

Just… finished.

And then—

they were gone.

Not fast.

Not slow.

Just—

not there anymore.

The street returned to normal.

Completely.

Like nothing had happened.

William stood there, breathing slowly.

Trying to steady himself.

Trying to understand something that refused to make sense.

"…Okay," he said finally. "That was worse."

No one disagreed.

His aunt turned away.

"Let's go."

William didn't argue.

He followed.

Not because he was told to.

But because there was nothing else to do.

The walk back was quiet.

Not peaceful.

Just… heavy.

Like something had shifted permanently.

William glanced down at his hand.

The glow had faded.

But not completely.

"…They weren't trying to take me," he said after a while.

"No," his aunt replied.

"They were checking something."

"Yes."

"…And now they know."

She didn't answer.

That was answer enough.

The house came into view.

Dark.

Still.

The broken door hanging slightly open.

Waiting.

William slowed slightly.

"…This is where everything gets worse, isn't it?" he said quietly.

His aunt didn't respond.

She didn't need to.

He already knew.

He stepped forward anyway.

Toward whatever was waiting inside.
