Chapter 49 - Chapter 49 – Shadows Before the Storm

The chamber where the Herald had fallen silent was now eerily empty. Only faint trails of corrupted energy lingered in the air, crackling and dissolving like dying embers. Rihan sat on one knee, his chest heaving, sweat dripping down his temple. His hand still trembled from the force of the Soul Link Strike.

For a fleeting moment, he felt victorious. Then the silence became too heavy.

"…It's not over," Kael muttered, his blade lowering but never leaving his grip. His sharp eyes scanned the shadows. "This was just one piece of the Mistress' plan."

Elira clutched her staff tightly, her lips quivering. "Herald wasn't fighting to win. He was… delaying us."

The words hit like a stone in their stomachs. Rihan's mind raced—if Herald wasn't trying to kill them, then what had they bought time for?

A tremor rippled through the stone floor, subtle at first but growing. Dust rained down from the cavern ceiling. From deep within the earth, a low hum resonated—like an ancient heartbeat awakening.

Mira's ears twitched, her tail bristling. "Something… something huge is stirring."

Rihan forced himself to stand. His body screamed in protest, but the bond from the Soul Link gave him strength. "We can't stay here. We have to move."

But before they could take a step, a voice slipped through the chamber like poisoned silk.

"You've done well to survive my Herald."

It was neither loud nor harsh, but it carried the weight of absolute authority. The team froze as a figure materialized in the air, her form wrapped in a veil of shadow. Long tendrils of darkness coiled around her like serpents, and though her face was obscured, her eyes burned crimson—piercing, regal, merciless.

The Mistress.

Even as an illusion, her presence crushed the air. Rihan's knees weakened, Elira staggered, and Kael had to plant his sword into the ground to keep from falling.

"So this is the band of pests that dares resist me," she said, her tone amused, as though addressing insects. "I must admit… you've grown quicker than I expected, little interloper."

Rihan's blood turned to ice. She knows. She knows I don't belong to this world.

He clenched his fists. "You'll pay for everything you've done."

The Mistress chuckled, a sound like glass breaking. "Oh, bold. But you're still crawling children. You think your 'bond' can rival what I command? My Ascended are endless. My roots run through every kingdom, every soul."

Her shadow spread, stretching across the walls, forming countless writhing shapes—demons, beasts, soldiers, faces twisted in agony.

Elira cried out, gripping her head. "She's trying to invade our minds—don't look at her shadows!"

Rihan shut his eyes, feeling the Soul Link pulse within his chest. Their bond shielded them, even against her mental assault, though cracks threatened to form.

The Mistress tilted her head slightly. "Interesting… your resonance resists me. A pity I can't crush you myself. Not yet. The seal still binds me."

Her words sent a shiver down Rihan's spine. Seal?

Kael's voice was ragged but firm. "What are you planning?"

The Mistress' crimson gaze locked on him, then drifted back to Rihan. "You'll find out soon enough. The gates beneath this land will open… and when they do, your world will drown."

The tremor beneath their feet intensified, the hum swelling into a deep rumble.

Then, just as suddenly as she appeared, the Mistress' shadow dissolved into mist, vanishing with a final whisper:

"Enjoy what little time remains, chosen ones."

The chamber fell silent again, but the silence no longer felt empty. It felt poisoned, heavy with the weight of what was to come.

Mira broke the silence with a strained voice. "Rihan… she knows you. Why? What is she talking about?"

Rihan lowered his gaze, his heart pounding. He hadn't told them the truth—not fully. Not about the world he came from, not about the strange messages only he could see.

But now, he realized, the Mistress knew more about him than even he understood.

He whispered, barely audible, "The real battle hasn't even begun yet."

Outside the chamber, the rumble grew louder. Far in the distance, ancient gates long buried beneath the mountains began to stir, their seals cracking.

And as the first sliver of crimson light leaked through, Rihan and his companions knew—they had just crossed the threshold into a storm unlike any they had ever faced.
