Chapter 76 - Chapter 76 – The Mistress’s Shadow

The shrine lay in ruins. Broken stone and shattered statues littered the ground, the faint stench of smoke and ichor still hanging in the air.

Rihan stood silently, staring at the fragments of the obsidian general's armor. The black shards pulsed faintly, as though they were still alive.

Kael spat to the side. "Good riddance. That bastard nearly carved us in half."

Mira stretched, wincing at the bruises along her arms. "Don't celebrate yet. You heard his last words. That Mistress he spoke of? Something tells me she's going to be much worse."

Lyra's hands shook as she held onto Rihan's sleeve. "Rihan… you can't keep using those chains like this. Every time you draw on them, you—your aura feels… less like yours."

Rihan clenched his fist, staring down at the faint glow across his arm. The Judicator's chains shimmered faintly before fading back beneath his skin.

"I don't have a choice," he muttered. "If we hadn't used them, we'd all be dead."

Elira, who had been silently watching, finally spoke. Her voice was cold but calm. "He wasn't lying. The Mistress will come. And when she does, she'll bring the full weight of the Eclipse with her. You've drawn her gaze."

Silence fell over the group.

Then—

The air shifted.

A suffocating chill swept across the shrine, so sudden that even Mira's smirk vanished. The shadows along the broken walls deepened unnaturally, stretching like living things.

Kael instantly raised his blade. "Everyone! On guard!"

Lyra gasped. "What—what is this presence?"

The shadows gathered near the fractured altar, swirling together like a black vortex. A figure began to form—tall, slender, cloaked in flowing robes darker than night. Her face was hidden, yet her eyes shone like twin crescents of crimson moonlight.

The very air trembled at her arrival.

Elira's voice dropped to a whisper. "The Mistress."

Rihan's chest tightened. He had never felt pressure like this. Even the obsidian general's killing aura was nothing compared to the suffocating dominance that now filled the shrine.

The figure's voice was soft, almost gentle—yet it echoed like a chorus.

"So… the successor reveals himself."

The chains around Rihan's arm pulsed violently, reacting to her presence. His breath caught in his throat as visions flashed in his mind—burning skies, shattered temples, and the Judicator standing against a woman wreathed in shadow.

The Mistress tilted her head, studying him. "You carry his chains. The last relic of Balance. How… amusing. Do you even know what you hold, child?"

Rihan forced his blade up, trying to steady his voice. "I don't care what you think I am. If you're the one behind this cult, then it ends here."

Her laughter was soft, melodic, and utterly terrifying. "End? No, Balance-breaker. This is only the beginning."

A Glimpse of Power

Kael moved first, charging forward with a roar. His runeblade ignited, arcs of flame and light trailing his strike.

The Mistress didn't even move. She simply raised a hand.

Shatter.

The force of her will alone flung Kael across the shrine, slamming him into a wall so hard the stone cracked.

"Kael!" Mira screamed, unleashing a volley of arrows. Each arrow carried elemental fury—fire, ice, lightning—but before they could land, the shadows around the Mistress swallowed them whole, dissolving them like smoke.

Mira's eyes widened. "That's—impossible."

Elira thrust her palms forward, runes blazing like stars. "Celestial Bind!" Chains of light shot forward, wrapping around the Mistress. For a heartbeat, it seemed like they had caught her.

But then the shadows twisted, and the runes shattered like glass. Elira staggered back, blood dripping from her nose.

The Mistress smiled faintly. "Children playing with scraps."

Finally, her gaze returned to Rihan. "Show me, successor. Show me the will of the Judicator."

The chains within Rihan's body writhed violently, responding to her command as though she were the rightful master. Pain tore through his veins, his vision blurring.

Break the balance. Shatter the scales.

The Judicator's voice echoed louder than ever.

Rihan fell to his knees, clutching his chest. "N-no… I won't… let you—!"

Lyra rushed to his side, tears streaking her face. "Fight it, Rihan! It's your power, not hers!"

But the Mistress only chuckled. "He cannot resist forever. Every time he uses those chains, he steps closer to me. Closer to corruption."

Her hand lifted slightly, and the fragments of the obsidian general's armor began to float, consumed by shadow. "This was only one general. I have many. And now… you have earned my full attention."

A Promise of War

The shrine shook violently as the shadows thickened, spreading across the floor like a tide of ink.

Kael struggled back to his feet, clutching his ribs. "Damn it… she's too strong…"

Mira cursed, trying to steady her bow despite trembling hands. "So what now? We fight and die?"

Elira's eyes narrowed. She had gone pale, sweat dripping down her face, but her voice was steady. "No. Look closer. This isn't her true form. It's only a projection."

Rihan forced himself to stand, his chains flaring weakly around him. "A… projection?"

The Mistress's smile widened. "Clever little half-blood. Yes. My true body rests beyond the Eclipse Gate. But even this fragment is more than enough to break you."

Her crimson eyes burned into Rihan's soul. "Run if you wish. It will not matter. Wherever you go, Balance-breaker, I will find you. The chains belong to me."

The shadows began to collapse inward, her form dissolving into smoke. Before she vanished completely, her final words echoed like a curse:

"The Eclipse descends. Prepare yourselves, children of Balance. Your world will drown in shadow."

And then she was gone.

Aftermath

The suffocating pressure lifted instantly. The shrine was silent once more, though the cracks in the stone and the lingering chill made it clear the encounter had been real.

Everyone stood frozen, barely able to process what had just happened.

Kael was the first to break the silence, voice hoarse. "If that was just a projection…" He trailed off, shaking his head. "We're in deeper trouble than I thought."

Mira collapsed onto the floor, hands still trembling. "I don't ever want to feel that again."

Elira's gaze was distant, calculating. "The Eclipse Gate… if she's trapped there, then that's our chance. But if she finds a way through, this world is finished."

Lyra clung to Rihan, her tears soaking his sleeve. "Don't use those chains anymore. Please. They're killing you."

Rihan didn't answer immediately. His mind was still burning with the Mistress's words. Successor. Judicator. Eclipse Gate.

The System's cold voice cut through his thoughts:

[Main Quest Updated.]

[New Objective: Unseal the Eclipse Gate.]

[Warning: Mistress's Hunt Begins.]

Rihan closed his eyes, his fist tightening. The battle was only beginning.
