"Fox has betrayed the Fraternity of Assassins."
The announcement from Sloan caused an immediate uproar.
Betrayal wasn't unheard of.
But this time, the traitor was Fox.
An Assassin Master second only to "Cross," the strongest master in the Brotherhood.
Every Assassin Master possessed not only overwhelming skill, but absolute faith.
An Assassin Master betraying the Brotherhood-
That had never happened.
"Although I am deeply reluctant to announce this," Sloan said heavily, "her name has appeared on the Loom."
"We have always believed in fate's guidance."
"And we have always believed that to kill one-"
"-is to save a thousand!"
"So put aside all other work. Focus entirely on locating Fox."
"Send her to meet her fate, brothers."
His voice was passionate.
"I must admit, the woman who betrayed us was among the strongest Assassin Masters."
"We must stay vigilant. Gather all our strength. Take her down before she causes greater harm."
"Gunsmith. Repairman. Butcher."
"You three stay."
"The Brotherhood's internal operations cannot stop. They require protection."
"Everyone else-leave immediately!"
As the assassins dispersed, Sloan quietly exhaled.
To be honest, he was panicking.
That was why he staged this.
Sending most of the assassins after Fox while deliberately keeping behind those who were capable-and swayable.
Sloan knew this well.
The only ones who could truly threaten an Assassin Master were other Assassin Masters.
Everyone else was cannon fodder.
And if Fox revealed what he had done-
The assassins would kill him first.
The real traitor to fate.
Sloan understood his own actions better than anyone.
He knew exactly how the Brotherhood would react if they learned their faith had been defiled.
"I didn't keep you here just to guard headquarters," Sloan said, turning to the few Assassin Masters he had intentionally retained.
He took a deep breath.
"Follow me."
He planned to lay everything out.
Then use persuasion and pressure to win them over.
If he failed-
He would kill them first and remove the threats.
...
"Something's wrong."
Inside the training base, Fox spoke first.
"When I went to buy food, I saw traces of assassin activity."
"They're tracking us."
"No-more precisely, they're tracking you."
"Sloan doesn't know I've betrayed the Brotherhood yet."
Carlos glanced at Wesley, who was still practicing curved shots.
"I received a call and a message from Sloan."
"I ignored both."
"You want to confront him in person?" Morin asked.
"Only face to face can I show him my anger," Carlos nodded.
"In that case," Morin said, "it's almost time for our plan to begin."
"After all this training..."
"Isn't it time Wesley got some real combat experience?"
"Given his current state," Wick said while putting on his shirt, "that'll be difficult."
"He still hasn't mastered the curved shot."
"I found it pretty simple."
Morin smiled silently, cursing inwardly.
"He just hasn't found his intuition yet," Carlos sighed.
"He doesn't know what he truly wants."
"He hasn't been in this world long," Morin shrugged. "It's normal he doesn't know what to pursue."
"But if you really want him to master it-"
"I have a way."
Carlos looked at him. "You do?"
"Of course," Morin nodded.
"If he can't find something to fight for..."
"Give him something he wants to protect."
"Carlos."
"Why don't you replace that pig?"
Carlos: "???"
"Don't worry," Morin patted his shoulder. "I'll protect you."
"If he hits you, I'll knock the bullet away."
I'm not worried about safety.
I'm worried about what you're implying, you bastard.
Carlos complained internally.
But after thinking it through, he agreed.
Morin's suggestion was based on Wesley's performance in the original story.
When Fox stood in front of the target, Wesley succeeded on his first attempt.
It didn't have to be Fox.
Anyone equally important would work.
Morin was confident.
"I... I can't..."
Hearing the plan, Wesley immediately shrank back.
But under Morin's encouragement, he forced himself to try.
Wesley knew the truth.
Everyone's progress was being delayed because of him.
He wanted to change more than anything.
But the more you rush, the harder it becomes.
Carlos replaced the dead pig and stood before the target.
Wesley closed his eyes.
He took a deep breath.
Relaxed.
Searching for that so-called intuition.
After a moment, he opened his eyes.
His gaze was firm.
His wrist flicked.
"Bang!"
Morin didn't intervene.
He watched the bullet spin through the air, tracing an elegant curve that would make physicists shed tears of "joy."
It bypassed Carlos.
And struck the target behind him.
"Bullseye," Wick said.
"Not bad," Carlos exhaled.
He walked over and patted Wesley's shoulder.
He decided to go easier on him next time.
"Even if it took a while," Carlos added, "that's only compared to that freak."
Fox nodded, offering praise for once.
"Given his background... his talent really is strong."
"It's decent," Morin nodded.
He was a little disappointed.
If Wesley had failed, it would've been a great show.
If Carlos hadn't worked, Fox would've stepped in.
And based on the original story, Wesley would've succeeded then.
Which would raise an interesting question.
Fail with his father.
Succeed with his crush.
It's common knowledge.
Simps don't get houses.
If that had happened, Carlos would've reenacted-
A father sees his son alive and pulls out the seven wolves.
Father less important than crush?
If that's not grounds for a beating, what is?
Unfortunately, the scene Morin wanted didn't happen.
Otherwise, Wesley would've been soaking in cell repair fluid for ten days to half a month.
"Since training here is basically complete," Morin said at last-
"Let's begin the operation."
