After accepting the quest, the receptionist, Luna, gave Emiya a rundown of the giant toads.

In Axel, giant toads were considered low-level monsters.

They were relatively easy to deal with.

In theory, any beginner adventurer could handle them.

Even so, they were still monsters.

Underestimating them just because they were toads was a mistake.

Their bodies were enormous-larger than a cow. During breeding season, they would move toward human settlements, seeking food to replenish their energy for laying eggs. Livestock like goats were often swallowed whole.

Every year, during that season, children and farmers from nearby settlements would go missing.

After getting the basic information, Emiya's group mounted their scooters and left Axel, heading toward the wide plains outside the town.

Half an hour later, they arrived.

A giant toad immediately entered their field of vision.

The red-skinned monster was massive.

Even an elephant wouldn't compare.

As expected of another world-monsters of this size appeared right outside a beginner town.

Its thick layer of fat was especially troublesome.

Blunt attacks would barely affect it.

Ordinary punches and kicks were completely useless.

Emiya stopped the scooter, created a sharp Damascus blade, and handed it to Kazuma Sato.

"It's yours. Go."

"...Me?" Kazuma pointed at himself, confused.

Aqua immediately mocked him.

"As expected of a shut-in. Useless Kazuma, are you already backing down?"

"Who's backing down?!"

Fueled by her provocation, Kazuma ignored his fear and rushed forward with the weapon in hand.

For a brief moment, his retreating figure even looked a little heroic.

Then-

"AHHH! HELP! Aqua! Emiya-san! SAVE ME!"

Emiya covered his face.

This was painful to watch.

Aqua burst into laughter.

"Pfft-! Look at you! Your face is red, you're crying, and you're still pretending to be brave!"

Emiya sighed.

Four invisible telekinetic hands flew out, pinning down the giant toad's limbs.

"Kazuma. Attack."

Kazuma looked back, saw the toad immobilized, and instantly regained courage.

He charged forward and, after a messy struggle, finally smashed its head.

The moment he returned, Aqua mocked him again.

But the satisfaction of killing his first monster was enough for Kazuma to ignore her completely.

Emiya rubbed his temples.

"Next time, attack from behind. Don't charge it head-on."

Even a slightly experienced adventurer could handle a giant toad.

But Kazuma was a complete rookie.

Rushing in like that was reckless.

"I... I understand," Kazuma nodded.

They moved on.

Soon, they found a second and third giant toad-together.

Emiya pointed.

"The one on the left is yours. The one on the right is mine."

Kazuma gave an OK sign.

"Leave it to me."

The first victory had boosted his confidence.

This time, he was noticeably calmer.

He circled behind the toad and attacked from the rear.

The process was clumsy.

But the result was solid.

Kazuma successfully took one down.

The other tried to assist its companion.

A telekinetic projectile crushed its skull mid-motion.

After that, the hunt continued.

The quest required driving off five giant toads within three days.

They had already defeated three.

Only two remained.

They were well ahead of schedule.

Kazuma was full of motivation.

Soon, they located the fourth toad.

Just as Kazuma prepared to charge-

Aqua suddenly raised her hand.

"Wait."

"What are you doing?" Kazuma asked.

Emiya saw her eager expression and immediately felt uneasy.

As expected, Aqua puffed out her chest proudly.

"You've beaten a few toads and already gotten arrogant? It's time for you to witness the power of a goddess."

"No," Emiya said instantly. "Don't do it. We're training Kazuma today."

He really didn't want to watch her get herself killed.

Kazuma nodded quickly. He didn't want Aqua stealing the spotlight either.

Aqua ignored them both.

She rushed forward.

Closing the distance, she threw a punch glowing with white light straight at the toad's abdomen.

"Witness divine might! How dare you block my path! How dare you oppose a god! Repent in hell-God Blow!"

Kazuma stared blankly.

"I'm pretty sure Luna said blunt attacks don't work on giant toads."

Emiya reacted instantly.

A telekinetic hand yanked Aqua back just before the toad swallowed her.

Even if the toad couldn't digest her, its mucus was unbearably foul.

Emiya had zero interest in returning to Axel with a goddess who smelled like that.

Because that would attract a certain masochistic Crusader.

If Emiya were a sadist, he might've welcomed Darkness and added her to the party.

She was beautiful.

And her defense was legendary.

Unbreakable.

Unfortunately, Emiya wasn't a sadist.

So he avoided that future entirely.

Kazuma looked at Aqua, who was still shaken.

"As expected of Lady Aqua. Completely useless. Just stay here and watch my performance."

Before Aqua could respond, Kazuma charged forward.

Leaving behind a goddess on the verge of tears.

By the end of the day, thanks to Kazuma's efforts, they completed the quest in a single day.

Emiya used telekinesis to lift all five toads and carried them back to the Adventurers' Guild.

The Guild offered transport services.

They cost money.

Using telekinesis saved Valis and trained his ability.

A perfect deal.

...

"Cheers!"

Inside the Guild, Emiya raised his glass and clinked it with Aqua's and Kazuma's.

The celebration began.

In front of them were plates of fried toad legs-made from the monsters they'd just defeated.

The meat was a little tough, but the flavor was light and refreshing.

A popular ingredient.

After one bite, Emiya was hooked.

It tasted great.

And it increased experience points.

This world was impressive.

Kazuma leaned back, grinning.

"Did you see that? I was super active today. Sure, I messed up at first, but things went smoothly after that. I'm basically a real adventurer now, right?"

Aqua scowled.

"You're still just a shut-in. Without Emiya's help, you wouldn't have done anything."

Kazuma nodded.

"I admit Emiya-san helped a lot. But compared to a certain freeloading goddess, I think I did great."

Aqua was speechless.

She bit her handkerchief and glared at him.

Kazuma didn't care.

He'd already seen through her.

She was even more useless than he'd imagined.

Any remaining reverence was gone.

"So, Emiya-san," Kazuma asked, "what quest are we taking tomorrow?"

"The same one," Emiya replied. "Giant toads."

"...Again?" Kazuma hesitated.

Emiya looked at him calmly.

"Then who do you think you can fight instead?"

"...Goblins?" Kazuma tried.

Emiya shook his head.

"Goblins travel in groups. Ten or more, usually armed. Are you confident you can handle that?"

Kazuma imagined it.

And shuddered.

"...Let's stick with giant toads."

Emiya nodded.

"We'll hunt toads for now. Once we level up and learn skills, goblins will be much easier."

That settled it.
