Barley water, warm, with too much salt in it, and Mira standing over him until the cup was empty.
"All of it," she said.
Rook drank the rest. It coated his teeth and sat in his stomach like a stone in a sack. Nine days he'd lived on this and snowmelt and nothing else, and yesterday he'd told himself that the morning he was let out on the gate he'd never drink it again. He handed her the cup.
"Two hours," Mira said. "Not four. Noon to the second hour after. In the passage, not on the paving. If you cough, you come in. If you sit down, you come in."
"I won't sit down."
"Then you won't have to come in." She took his wrist and counted against it with her eyes on the wall, and let it go. "Eat something first. Bread, not this. The cook's got bread."
