The water Naida gave the children tasted of the roof.
Osmund tasted it first, as he'd tasted everything they'd been given since the nineteenth, before he passed the cup down to the smallest inside his coat. Snow, melted in the lidded pot over the embers, and in it the sod it had been scraped off, grass and earth and old smoke from ten winters of the Speaker's fire going up through the hole. It wasn't bad. It was the house. He nodded, and his daughter drank, and handed the cup up to her sister without being told, and her sister gave it to the boy.
