Chapter 22 – The Mysterious Woman
The mist thickened, swallowing the shapes of trees until even breath felt heavy.
In the center of a ring formed by Dark Elf warriors, two figures faced each other: Valdyn Thalorian, bearer of a bloodline tied to ancient prophecy, and Nymeris, the young mistress of the Dark Elves.
Her violet eyes cut through the fog like blades, sharp and unyielding.
Valdyn stood unmoved, bow in hand, his emerald gaze steady, like a flame refusing to flicker.
---
Nymeris paced slowly, her voice cold and crystalline.
"Forest Elves… always prattling about honor, about the future, about ancestors."
Her lips curled into disdain. "But when war erupted, who abandoned the front? Who left us to bleed while they hid in their woods?"
A chorus of angry murmurs rose among the Dark Elves.
"Forest Elves are cowards!" one spat.
"They have no right to speak of the future!" cried another.
Nymeris raised her hand, and silence fell like a blade.
Her gaze locked back onto Valdyn.
"You dare come here carrying the name Thalorian. Tell me—what makes you different from those cowards?"
Valdyn did not flinch.
"I will not deny history. Forest Elves did fail. They hid when their brothers died. But I am not them. I came not to hide—I came to challenge fate."
Nymeris's eyes narrowed. "Pretty words. But words do not save lives."
---
She lifted her silver-etched staff. A pulse of shadow surged outward, thick and suffocating. The mist twisted unnaturally, forming grotesque shapes, as if unseen creatures prowled just beyond sight.
Valdyn felt the pressure, yet his body remained still. He poured mana into his bow instead. A green arrow of pure energy formed without string, glowing faintly like a living flame.
Nymeris's eyes glimmered briefly with intrigue—but her lips curved into a mocking smile.
"So you are not entirely ordinary. Your mana… it is purer than any Forest Elf I have seen."
Valdyn said nothing. His silence was an answer, his gaze locked unwaveringly on hers.
---
Nymeris lowered her staff slightly, leaning closer, her tone laced with venom.
"Tell me, Valdyn Thalorian. Did you come here to beg for an alliance? To have us kneel and acknowledge you? Forest Elves lost their honor long ago. Do you now seek to steal ours as well?"
Her words struck sharp, making Valdyn's young followers flinch, some trembling, some nearly breaking.
Valdyn inhaled slowly, then spoke loudly enough for every Dark Elf to hear.
"I did not come to beg. I came to offer a choice. Follow me, and the elves will rise again. Refuse, and we all remain buried in shadows, forgotten by the world."
The mist shuddered, as though the forest itself reacted to his words.
---
Nymeris laughed, her voice like a shard of ice cutting through the trees.
"A choice? You bring five frightened children and dare speak of choice? Arrogant fool."
She lifted her staff once more, and this time black-violet light erupted from its tip. The surrounding mist thickened, swirling into the shape of an arena.
"Words mean nothing here. There is only one language we respect—strength."
The ground itself seemed to groan. The Dark Elf warriors stepped back, forming a circle wide enough for battle.
Nymeris pointed her staff directly at Valdyn.
"Prove yourself. Duel me. If you win, I may listen to you. But if you lose, your life—and theirs—ends here."
The Dark Elves hissed in unison, eager, their crimson eyes gleaming with cruel delight.
---
Valdyn looked down at his bow, exhaling steadily. Mana coursed through his veins, flaring outward in a radiant green aura that defied the gloom around him.
He lifted his head, meeting Nymeris's gaze, voice steady and clear.
"I accept your challenge."
His words were simple, but the impact rippled through both allies and enemies alike.
His young companions stiffened, fear still present, but awe beginning to kindle in their eyes.
Nymeris smirked, dangerous and alluring.
"Good. Let us see if the name Thalorian is worthy of ancestors… or nothing more than an empty shadow."
---
Dark light and green brilliance clashed in the air. Roots shifted, mist coiled, the forest itself reshaping into a dueling ground.
Dark Elf warriors retreated to the edges, their stares burning with anticipation.
The young elves behind Valdyn whispered, caught between dread and admiration.
At the center, Nymeris raised her staff, and Valdyn raised his bow.
Two worlds, one of shadow and one of nature's light, prepared to collide.
This battle would decide whether they remained eternal enemies… or forged the first bridge toward unity.
---
Nymeris challenged Valdyn to a duel of magic. No more words—only power would decide.
