Chapter 202 - The Domain Ruler

The wind shifted. It was no longer the gentle, whispering current that had defined the icy domain until now, but something heavier and sharper, as though the very air had become aware of what was about to happen. High above, on the summit of that colossal frozen peak, the monster moved — not fast, not yet, but with such weight behind it that a ripple ran through the entire domain, and ice cracked along the face of the mountain in deep fractures that spread outward like veins as the creature slowly straightened to its full and terrifying height.

Inside the cockpit Youri didn't move, and didn't blink. "Alright," he whispered, almost to himself.

Altopereh adjusted its stance in the air, its stabilizers flaring as it hovered just above the fractured ice. The machine groaned under the pressure of the cold and its movements were already sluggish, but Youri pushed past it. There was no retreat. Not anymore.

The monster stepped forward, and the world answered. The mountain beneath it shifted — not in any figurative sense, but physically — and whole sections of ice broke away and fell as though they could no longer bear its weight, snow cascading down in slow-motion avalanches that vanished into the endless white below. And then it was gone.

Youri's eyes widened as a shockwave erupted from above. The monster had leapt. The force of its leap shattered the peak it had stood on and sent shards of ice and debris raining down across the domain. The air screamed around its descent, its massive frame cutting through the sky like a falling blade.

"Move—!" Youri slammed the thrusters, and Altopereh lurched sideways an instant before the monster crashed into the place where it had been hovering. The impact was catastrophic. An explosion of ice and pressure tore outward in every direction, ripping through the frozen terrain and sending Altopereh spinning helplessly through the air. The warning systems screamed and the cockpit shook violently. Youri was thrown forward, and his head struck the edge of the console. Blood ran down his forehead. He didn't even register it. His eyes were already searching, tracking — there. Through the blizzard of ice and debris, the monster rose from the crater it had made. Unharmed. Completely unharmed.

"Yeah," Youri muttered, breathing hard. "That figures."

The creature didn't roar and didn't hesitate. It moved — fast, far too fast for something of its size — and in an instant it had closed the distance, a massive claw sweeping upward. Youri reacted on pure instinct. "Guard—!"

Altopereh raised its arm just in time, and the force of the blow was beyond anything the weakened unit could take. The whole arm buckled under it, its armor shattering as the limb was driven back into the torso. The shock ran through the frame and slammed into the cockpit like a hammer, crushing the air from Youri's lungs. The Orbiton was flung away and skidded across the ice, carving a deep trench, until it smashed into a jagged formation and stopped.

Silence, for half a second. And the monster was already there, with no delay and no wasted motion, its second strike coming down straight at the cockpit. Youri forced the thrusters. Altopereh barely rolled aside before the claw struck the ground, and the ice beneath it exploded — not cracked, not shattered, but disintegrated under the sheer pressure, leaving a gaping hole in the surface.

Youri's breathing grew uneven. "I can't take a single hit from that thing…" He forced Altopereh back into the air and kept his distance — just enough to think. "Think… think…"

The monster tilted its head slightly, observing him. Learning. And then it lunged again, faster than before.

Youri fired. Altopereh's remaining laser systems ignited, crimson beams cutting across the white expanse and striking the monster square in the chest. For a moment there was contact and a flare of energy. Then nothing. The beams scattered across its body like light falling on stone, leaving no damage and not even a mark.

"You've got to be kidding me."

The monster closed in. Youri tried to evade, but the cold, the damage and the time-worn systems all slowed him just enough. The creature's tail lashed out and caught Altopereh in midflight. The blow was devastating. The Orbiton spun violently, its systems flickering as whole sections of armor tore away, and Youri was slammed against the cockpit again with blood running freely down his face now while he fought to stay conscious. But the monster wasn't finished. It pressed forward relentlessly. Its next strike came from above. Youri forced a block with both arms raised, and the claws came down and shattered them. Both limbs collapsed under the force, twisted and broken beyond use. Altopereh dropped out of the sky and crashed hard onto the ice.

The cockpit dimmed as the warnings screamed. "Structural integrity critical. Mobility failure. Core instability rising."

Youri coughed, and blood stained his lips. "Heh…" A weak laugh escaped him. "So this is how it ends?"

Outside, the monster approached — slowly now, deliberately, like a predator savoring the last moments before the kill. Each step cracked the ice beneath it and sent tremors through the ground until it stood over the fallen Orbiton, towering and unstoppable. Youri tried to move, but the controls barely answered. "Come on…" Nothing.

The monster raised its claw for a final strike, clean and absolute. Youri closed his eyes. "Guess I wasn't ready for this world after all…"

The claw came down—

And then a roar split the sky. Not the domain ruler's, but something else: something massive, something alive. Youri's eyes snapped open as a shadow passed overhead, fast and enormous. Before the monster's strike could land, something slammed into it from the side and sent it skidding across the ice. For the first time, it had been moved.

Youri's vision blurred, but he forced himself to look, and what he saw was a beast unlike anything he had ever imagined. A massive winged creature soared above him, its body long and serpentine and covered in dark, layered scales that shimmered faintly against the crimson sky. Its wings were so vast that they blotted out the storm, every beat of them sending violent gusts across the domain. Its head was draconic, long and crowned with jagged horns that curved backward like blades, and its eyes burned — not with rage, but with awareness. It roared again and dived once more at the domain ruler. The two monsters clashed, and for the first time the battlefield shifted.

Youri barely had time to take it in before the dragon came down toward him — fast, too fast. "What—?" Its massive claws reached down and seized Altopereh. The whole Orbiton was lifted off the ground in a single motion, and Youri clung to the controls as the world fell away beneath him. The dragon didn't slow and didn't hesitate. It flew straight out of the domain.

Behind them the domain ruler roared — a sound of fury, and of challenge — but it did not follow. It stopped at the edge of its territory and stood watching and waiting, as though it were bound to its domain.

Youri's vision faded in and out as the dragon carried him across the desert and the icy winds gave way once more to the scorching, chaotic currents of Tartarus. "Saved…?" he muttered weakly. The last thing he saw was the endless desert below, and the shadow of the dragon carrying him across it.
