Chapter 20 - Chapter 20 – Defiance in Blood and Chains

The sun hung high over the coliseum, casting long, harsh shadows across the cracked sand. Dust and blood swirled together in the air, rising from the bodies of the three knights and the monstrous beast Draven had torn apart just moments before. Every spectator's eye was fixed on the arena's center, where two figures now faced each other in the aftermath of chaos and divine intervention.

Selene knelt, one knee pressed into the sand, her black armor cracked, blood streaking her jaw and collarbone. Her sword, once radiant with the Goddess's blessing, lay at her side, dimmed and lifeless. She was no longer the untouchable champion of fate; she was a mortal standing in front of a man who had defied gods themselves.

Above her, Draven stood, black fire coiling around his fists, the Godslayer Core pulsing within his chest like a second heartbeat, a storm ready to consume everything. His breath came in ragged gasps, chest rising and falling under the strain of forbidden power, yet his eyes burned with unshakable resolve.

The crowd screamed. Their voices were a hurricane, a chorus of bloodlust and awe. "Kill! Kill! Kill!" The chant rolled across the coliseum like a tidal wave, demanding carnage.

Kaelen leaned over the balcony, the smirk on his lips a serpentine twist. He had been waiting for this moment, hungry for Draven to make a fatal mistake. "Do it," Kaelen whispered to himself. "Cross the line, mortal. Show me how fragile defiance truly is."

Draven's system whispered inside his mind, cold and calculating:

[System Alert: Fatal Strike Available.][Option A: Kill Selene – Immediate gain: Remove Champion. Cost: Divine Retaliation Guaranteed.][Option B: Spare Selene – Risk: Betrayal Potential 73%. Reward: Possible ally, unknown trajectory.]

Draven's gaze swept over Selene, blood dripping from her lips, her armor dented and stripped of divine glow. She didn't beg. She didn't plead. Instead, her eyes, defiant and unreadable, dared him to make a choice.

His fingers tightened around the chains of the Godslayer Core, fire licking his knuckles. The crowd's chant became a roar, demanding his answer. His chest heaved, heart hammering like a drumbeat in a war hall.

He exhaled slowly, the black fire around his fists coiling tighter, pulsing with life and death.

"I don't take orders from gods," he said, voice rough, carrying over the silenced crowd. "And I don't kill someone just because fate tells me to."

The Act of Mercy

Draven extended his hand toward Selene, his black flames dimming as he did so. The arena seemed to hold its collective breath. Thousands of eyes watched the mortal defy not only the Goddess's champion but the very edicts of divinity.

Selene's brows knitted in surprise. She stared at his outstretched hand, uncertain, confused, yet intrigued. She wanted to speak, but no words escaped her lips. For the first time in her life, she was forced to confront the idea that the man standing before her could choose mercy over blood.

The crowd erupted into chaos. Some cheered, a wild celebration of rebellion, while others hissed in fury. Many soldiers stared in disbelief; their chants of "Kill!" died to murmurs of awe.

Kaelen's smirk warped into a shadow of annoyance. His eyes narrowed, calculating. Mercy? He dares show mercy in front of all of Valoria? This mortal is more dangerous than I imagined.

The king, observing from the balcony, furrowed his brow in thought. "This man… he could be an instrument of hope… or the spark of ruin."

The palace banners flapped violently in the wind as if the world itself trembled in response to Draven's choice.

Selene's Perspective

Selene's mind raced. She had been trained, blessed, and guided by the Goddess herself. She was taught that mercy was weakness. She was the Champion. Killing—or being killed—was a matter of destiny.

Yet here he was, standing over her, alive, powerful, yet refusing to strike the finishing blow. The man she had been fated to kill had shattered every rule of fate she had known.

Her pulse quickened, her mind torn. Is this arrogance? Or is this something else?

She looked up, locking eyes with Draven. There was pain there, yes, but also a terrible honesty. She sensed that he would do what he thought was right, consequences be damned.

Selene swallowed. She was no longer the embodiment of divine inevitability; she was a woman forced to reckon with the impossible—the humanity of a man who could break gods.

Kaelen's Calculations

From the balcony, Kaelen watched like a hawk. The man spared Selene. The crowd roared in response, the king's attention shifting, and the Goddess herself surely taking notice from afar.

Kaelen's mind raced with schemes. He is dangerous. But he is also predictable. He has mercy—he shows restraint. I will use that weakness. Every ally he makes, every choice of mercy, is another thread I can manipulate.

He leaned over the railing, voice low and venomous. "Enjoy this mercy while you can, Godslayer. The game has only begun. Fate has more tricks to play, and I will be waiting when your conscience falters."

Divine Attention

Far beyond the coliseum, the Goddess of Fate watched from her radiant temple, her mirror pool reflecting every moment of the battle. Her golden eyes narrowed, and the ripples of the pool shimmered violently as Draven's mercy echoed through the threads of fate.

"A mortal… who defies the will of gods. Interesting," she murmured, her voice both fascination and fury. "Loki's toy has grown bold. If he survives, he could unravel everything."

Her gaze shifted toward Selene, kneeling but alive. "You have failed me, Champion. And yet… he has shown you something no god ever could. Keep your wits, for his defiance is contagious."

The Aftermath

The guards moved forward, uncertainty in their steps, unsure whether to bind Draven or ensure Selene's safe removal. The king raised his hand, silencing them with a single gesture.

"This man," the king's voice boomed, echoing across the arena, "is no ordinary warrior. He has defied gods in front of the empire. He is dangerous… but he is mine."

Chains of divine steel clamped onto Draven's wrists, biting into his flesh. The Godslayer Core dimmed, retreating into a suppressed state, its black fire withdrawing like a storm forced back into the eye of a hurricane.

Selene was lifted away by her attendants, her eyes never leaving Draven's. Gratitude, hatred, and respect warred in her gaze, creating something dangerous and unreadable.

Draven allowed himself the chains, letting the world watch. "So this is how you treat your champions, Kaelen?" he said, voice low, yet carrying enough for the balcony to hear.

Kaelen's whisper was a dagger. "Mercy is weakness, mortal. And weakness is the first thread fate cuts."

Seeds of the Next War

The crowd dispersed, murmurs of awe and fear swirling through the city. Draven was led away to the palace dungeons, the system alerting him to dangers far beyond mortal comprehension. His body burned with fatigue, but his spirit roared with defiance. He had done the impossible: defied fate, spared a god-champion, and survived.

But he knew this was only the beginning. Kaelen's schemes would grow. The Goddess would not forget. And Selene… Selene might yet become the weapon or the shield that could determine his future.

Draven's system whispered warnings of the future:

[Warning: Divine awareness of Host increased 87%.][Enemies plotting: Kaelen and Cultists – High threat.][Potential Ally: Selene – Unknown alignment.]

Chains clinked as he walked, each step a reminder that defiance had a price.

Cliffhanger Ending

Dragged into the dungeons, yet defiant, Draven allowed himself a faint, bloody grin. His fists burned with black fire, his spirit untamed.

Will Selene become Draven's ally in the battles to come—or the sword that strikes him when he least expects it?
