Chapter 5 - PROGRESSION

Morning sunlight leaked through the blinds in thin, golden strips, cutting across the dim interior of Adrian's small apartment. Dust motes floated lazily in the beams. The soft hum of the city filtered through the cracked window—distant engines, early footsteps, muted conversations. Life moved on outside, uncaring, unbothered.

But in here… it felt like the world had paused for him alone.

Adrian sat on the edge of his couch, fingers wrapped around a mug of lukewarm coffee that tasted more like burnt bitterness than caffeine. He wasn't really drinking it. He just needed something in his hands to ground him, because everything else in his life right now felt like smoke—tangible one moment, dissolving the next.

Transmigration. A new identity. A strange world.

And a system.

A real one. A thinking one. A watching one.

He took a slow breath, eyes half-closed. The memories of this body merged with his like overlapping film reels. His mind felt too full—of things he'd lived, and things "Adrian" had lived before him. Faces. Streets. Fights. Regrets. Dreams that weren't his… yet strangely were.

And somewhere hidden within those tangled memories, there was an itch he couldn't scratch—an instinct that whispered he wasn't meant to live an ordinary life here.

No. He was meant for something else.

Something deeper.

Something dangerous.

He set the cup aside and wiped his palms against his jeans. His heartbeat steadied, growing deliberate, controlled. He had always been like this—calm in chaos, sharp when pressured.

"Enough waiting," he murmured to himself.

He straightened his back and exhaled.

Then spoke clearly.

"System. Show me my status."

The air shifted instantly.

A faint vibration pulsed around him. The lights flickered—not physically, but in a way only he could perceive, like reality adjusting itself to accommodate something unnatural. A transparent interface shimmered into existence before him, faintly blue, impossibly crisp.

His breath hitched. Even though he'd expected it, the sight still sent a shiver crawling up his spine.

Adrian leaned closer, absorbing every detail.

The stats themselves… average, but balanced. Nothing flashy. Nothing abnormal. A typical beginner template. Which meant one thing:

He wasn't special yet.

He clicked his tongue softly.

Strength and agility were passable. Intelligence and charm were notably higher—something he could weaponize if he played his cards right. But luck… that miserable 5 annoyed him.

He ran a hand through his hair, sighing.

"Of course. My luck is trash."

But the more he stared at the panel, the more he realized something else—something subtle.

There was potential.

Not just in the numbers, but in the hidden spaces between them. He could feel it. The system felt deeper, heavier, more complex than the standard models he'd read in novels.

It wasn't just tracking him…

It was evaluating him.

And then he froze.

Because for a split second, the Title section flickered.

Letters twisted into a glitchy, distorted fragment:

[ H̷i̷d̷d̷e̷n̷ H̷e̷—̷ ]

Then vanished.

Replaced once again with an empty dash.

A cold ripple rolled down his spine.

"What was that…?" he whispered.

The system remained silent.

But he wasn't stupid.

He saw it.

He felt it.

Hidden Heir.

The implication was obvious—and terrifying.

But heir to what?

Money?

Power?

A clan?

A legacy?

A curse?

His jaw tightened.

"Not now," he muttered. "I'll deal with that when I'm ready."

He dismissed the panel with a thought, feeling it dissolve into faint particles of light.

The room felt smaller now, the silence louder, the air heavier with unspoken truths. Adrian stood up slowly, stretching, letting his muscles loosen. Despite everything, his body felt slightly better—clearer, more responsive, as though the system was fine-tuning him.

He put on his jacket and headed toward the door. But before he could turn the knob, something tugged at his attention.

A soft chime rang in his head.

[ New Feature Unlocked: Basic Growth Tracker ]

He blinked.

"What's that?"

The system responded with calm precision:

[ Growth Tracker will monitor your daily improvements in actions, attributes, habits, and choices. ]

[ Temporary boosts may occur. Permanent improvements require consistency and System approval. ]

He stopped.

He smiled.

"So my actions shape my stats? I can literally grind my way up?"

[ Affirmative. Your growth is determined by your decisions. ]

This simple line sent adrenaline humming through his veins.

A system that rewarded effort.

A life where power was measurable.

A world where everything he did mattered.

He stepped out into the hallway.

The apartment behind him now felt like a cocoon he'd finally shed.

Outside, the city welcomed him with noise—cars rushing by, vendors shouting, young professionals rushing to work. Life pulsed in every direction.

And for the first time, Adrian felt like he belonged in the chaos.

He was built for it.

But he wasn't done.

"System," he said. "Any other notifications for me?"

There was a brief pause.

Then another chime.

[ Minor Reward Granted: +5 Urban Experience Points ]

He frowned.

"Urban… experience?"

[ Urban Experience contributes to navigating city environments, social networks, hidden influence, and local power structures. ]

His smile widened.

This system was not simple.

Not a beginner toy.

Not a basic cheat.

This was the foundation of something much larger.

Something that would define his future.

"Good," he whispered.

He walked into the bustling streets, determination sharpening his gaze.

He didn't have wealth yet.

He didn't have influence yet.

He didn't have power yet.

But he had the one thing that mattered at the beginning of every empire—

potential.

And he intended to use it.

Every step he took from here would shape him.

Every decision would mold his future.

The world didn't know him yet.

But soon…

They would.

His rise had officially begun.
