Chapter 15 - The Crimson Hand Beneath Heaven

The bells would not stop.

Their violent echoes tore through the Celestial Citadel as panic spread like wildfire across the floating city.

The elegant Banquet of Masks had become chaos.

Nobles ran.

Servants screamed.

Royal guards rushed through crystal corridors with drawn weapons.

And beneath the floating palace—

Something ancient was waking.

Aarav stood frozen on the balcony, Nightfall already in his hand.

Below the endless clouds, the crimson abyss twisted like a living wound in the sky.

One massive hand of shadow had already risen, clawing upward through divine chains and broken seals.

It looked less like a creature…

and more like a god trying to crawl back into the world.

Lyra stood beside him, her silver eyes wide.

"The lower prison seal…"

Her voice trembled for the first time.

"It was never supposed to break."

Kael's voice thundered inside Aarav's mind.

"It was never asleep."

Seraphine appeared from the shadows, spear in hand.

Her expression was sharp.

"The Eternal Sovereign was sealed beneath the Citadel itself."

Aarav's grip tightened.

"So the throne room of the world was built on top of a prison."

Kael's answer was immediate.

"Yes."

"Because fools always believe chains last forever."

Another divine chain snapped.

BOOM!

The entire floating city shook violently.

Crystal chandeliers shattered.

Bridges cracked.

Students in the courtyard below screamed as chunks of white stone fell into the clouds.

At the centre of the sky, Lord Regent Alistair rose above the palace, surrounded by golden light.

His staff burnt like a miniature sun.

His voice exploded across the heavens.

"All heirs and rulers to the central seal platform!"

The command itself carried power.

No one dared disobey.

Kaiden was already moving through the broken ballroom, lightning surrounding him like armour.

Cassian Solaris stood calm even now, helping nobles evacuate with that same perfect smile.

Riyan looked like he regretted every life choice that led him here.

Reasonable.

Lyra turned toward Aarav.

"If the prison breaks completely—"

Aarav finished for her.

"Everyone dies."

She nodded.

Simple.

Clear.

Annoying.

He looked once more at the crimson hand rising through the abyss.

Then stepped forward.

"Let's go."

The Central Seal Platform stood beneath the main palace, suspended over the deepest point of the abyss.

Seven massive pillars surrounded it, each carved with the crest of one Great House.

At the centre was a gigantic seal circle made of divine silver.

Or rather—

what remained of it.

Cracks spread across the formation like broken glass.

Crimson energy poured upward from beneath.

The hand below had become an arm.

Massive.

Ancient.

Still rising.

The rulers of the Six Houses stood around the platform.

For the first time, none of them looked calm.

Even the King of Solaris had lost his polished smile.

Only Malachar Solaris remained disturbingly relaxed.

Lord Regent Alistair descended to the centre.

"The prison seal is collapsing."

His golden eyes moved across the heirs.

"The Eternal Sovereign has been feeding on the resentment of bloodlines for centuries."

Kaiden scoffed.

"So our family drama summoned an ancient demon."

Alistair looked at him.

"In simple terms, yes."

Kaiden nodded.

"Fair."

Even now, somehow, he was like this.

Aarav stepped closer to the broken seal.

The moment he approached, the crimson energy reacted violently.

The abyss below roared.

The giant arm paused.

Then turned.

Toward him.

Every ruler noticed.

Silence fell.

The crimson mist below shifted, and a voice echoed from the depths.

Ancient.

Immortal.

Hungry.

Umbra…

Every shadow on the platform trembled.

Aarav felt it in his bones.

Recognition.

Hatred.

Memory.

The Eternal Sovereign knew him.

Or rather—

It knew his bloodline.

Malachar Solaris smiled faintly.

"There it is."

Kael's voice turned sharp.

"He wants this."

Aarav's eyes narrowed.

Of course he did.

The old monster wasn't afraid.

He was waiting.

Lord Regent Alistair raised his staff again.

"The seal requires seven bloodline anchors."

His voice was heavy.

"Originally, Umbra stood among them."

His gaze locked onto Aarav.

"Now, only your blood can stabilise the final pillar."

The truth hit instantly.

Of course.

They needed Umbra.

Not for honour.

For survival.

Cassian stepped forward smoothly.

"How fortunate, then, that our lost heir arrived in time."

Kaiden muttered,

"I hate how he says everything."

Lyra agreed.

"Same."

Aarav ignored both.

He stared at the broken black pillar—the Umbra anchor.

Cracked.

Abandoned.

Forgotten.

Just like his bloodline.

And now they needed it.

Poetic.

Seraphine's voice softened.

"My king… this may cost heavily."

Kael added,

"The seal does not ask politely."

Meaning pain.

Probably a lot of it.

Excellent.

Aarav walked toward the black pillar.

The rulers watched in silence.

Malachar watched most carefully.

That alone made Aarav want to succeed out of spite.

He placed one hand on the pillar.

Instantly—

Agony.

It felt like his blood was being pulled from his veins.

The Umbra crest on his chest ignited.

Silver and crimson light exploded across the platform.

The black pillar awakened.

Ancient runes spread like fire.

The other six pillars responded.

The seal circle beneath them lit up.

For one glorious second—

hope.

Then the abyss laughed.

The crimson arm slammed upward.

BOOM!

The divine circle shattered again.

A shockwave threw everyone backwards.

Aarav crashed against the stone, blood on his lips.

Too strong.

The seal wasn't enough.

From the abyss, a face began to rise.

Not fully formed.

Just eyes.

Burning red.

A mouth made of living shadow.

The Eternal Sovereign smiled.

You seal me with traitors… and call it justice?

Its laughter shattered the sky.

Several weaker heirs collapsed from the pressure alone.

Even Kaiden dropped to one knee.

Lyra held herself upright through sheer will.

Lord Regent Alistair's golden light dimmed.

The creature was not fully free.

And yet—

It already felt unstoppable.

Then it looked only at Aarav.

Come, child of Orion.

Its voice became softer.

More dangerous.

You and I are not enemies.

The platform fell silent.

Kael's rage exploded.

"Lies!"

But the Sovereign continued.

Your father sealed me because he feared the truth.

Aarav's breathing slowed.

It was trying to poison doubt.

Trying to turn him.

Still—

The words hit.

Because lies were built on pieces of truth.

Lyra reached for him.

"Don't listen."

The Sovereign laughed again.

Ask the Bloodmoon queen why she cried that night.

Lyra froze.

The rulers' faces shifted.

Too subtle for most.

Not subtle enough for Aarav.

There was truth hidden there.

More truth.

More lies.

Good.

He was tired of partial answers.

Aarav rose slowly.

Blood at his lips.

Nightfall in his hand.

And the shadows around him are rising like a kingdom.

He pointed the blade toward the abyss.

"I don't need your truth."

The crimson eyes narrowed.

Aarav's voice carried across the broken heavens.

"I'll carve my own."

The shadows answered.

The Umbra pillar blazed.

Even Kael fell silent.

The Sovereign smiled.

For the first time—

not mocking.

Interested.

Excellent.

Then the abyss began pulling back.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

The crimson hand descended.

The broken chains reformed partially.

The pressure eased.

Everyone stared.

Why?

Why retreat?

The Sovereign's final words echoed upward.

Grow stronger, heir of shadows.

I would rather be freed by a king… than by cowards.

The abyss was sealed.

Not fully.

But enough.

Silence returned.

Heavy.

Broken.

Lord Regent Alistair stood breathing hard.

"No one leaves the Citadel."

His voice was absolute.

"The summit has changed."

He looked at every ruler.

"From this moment forward, the trials are no longer ceremonial."

His gaze landed on Aarav.

"They are survivors."

Far above, dawn began to break across the clouds.

But the light felt colder now.

Because everyone understood the same thing—

The true enemy had spoken.

And it had chosen Aarav.
