Chapter 24 - Packing

"Everyone ready?" Ael asked the group.

We split off into groups of two. Eira and I, then Ameil and Ael. They used the same reason to group with Eira as when they first sent me to talk to her on the tower. Because the other two somehow have fewer people skills than I do.

'How is that even possible!'

I couldn't help but plant my face into my palm, not in real life, but in my mind.

The plan was to spend the whole day today scavenging for different resources we may need out in the wastelands. Our job was to gather food here at the cafeteria and head to the medical center for some supplies. Amiel's and Ael's job was to go and scavenge at the start, building some type of mini wagon, easy enough to carry through the wastelands. There were no horses here, so we were going to have to take turns carrying it, including me.

I may have been injured, but it was already the fourth day since we got out of the bunker, and I was already feeling better. By the time we leave, I should be feeling recovered.

There are scars left on my body along with the burn marks that Ael had to do to make sure I healed up properly, but it's better to have scars than be dead. Not like I was that worried about looks.

"Shall we get started?" A soft voice came from the left of me. It was Eira.

"Sure."

We first started by going back to the kitchen and going through each box of food. Even though it was all canned food, some was better than others. We want to make sure we don't get thirsty so easily. An example of this is the different types of bean cans here. Some cans had salt, some didn't. Salt can make someone thirsty, and relatively quick, it was best to avoid that. Same with vegetables. This is what many people did in the wastelands to make sure they did not go through all their water in one day.

When completing this task, we then made sure to grab enough water for four weeks. Unlike food, you can't survive without water for long. Gathering the four weeks of water together looked more like six weeks' worth here.

Just like Ael explained, we have to be prepared for if anything goes wrong. So much has changed here; the same can be true out in the wastelands.

We started around an hour after the first bell, so about nine o'clock, and ended about five. Ael and Amiel were still out in the forest doing what they had to do. They took food with them, so they didn't have to come back while we ate here when we had a small break.

Not much talking was done between Eira and me. It was kind of hard with someone who didn't know anything. There was nothing we could relate to. Though she was interested in one thing. She was interested in the relationship between me and the others.

I told her simply that Ael and I have become recent friends, while Amiel and I were just companions. She wanted the whole spill on how we all met. I didn't tell her much about it, just that we met down in the bunker and have been helping each other ever since. I didn't want to get into the details much, seeing how I was last night. I did not want to invoke the same reaction.

"I think that's enough for today, tomorrow we will have to do the rest, the sun will be down soon," I said.

We were able to finish packing the food. All we had left were the medical supplies.

"Sounds good to me."

"Plus, they should be back soon; we should be waiting here for them."

Thinking about it, they really only had food for lunch. They will be hungry for dinner. I should probably make food. Plus, I'm hungry myself.

Heading back to the kitchen, I went ahead and took some of the other food that was still here to make something. Eira watched me as I did so.

"You can cook?"

"Eh, not really, but I can make something to survive at least."

"Ohhhh."

'Wow, she really is easy to entertain.'

As I put food on the pan, cooked some rice, and chopped some vegetables, I had what looked like a downgraded version of what Ael made.

Placing it in front of her, I can see that I did not meet her expectations.

"What?" I said to her as she had a disappointed look on her face. "You know what Ael made was high-grade cooking; most professional chefs don't cook that good, so don't compare mine to his."

She fluttered her arms crazily, "No, no, I would never."

"Still want it then?"

"Mhm, yes please."

'Getting some deja vu from this.'

As I watched her take a bit of the food, I couldn't help but ask, "So you like it?"

"Yes, thank you very much."

'How polite.'

"No problem."

I stared at her for a moment, letting her chow down on the food for a bit, then asked, "Have you gotten any hint of your memories?"

She stopped herself from taking another bite. "Not really."

"If you don't mind me asking, then what do you plan to do when we are out of here?"

She turned towards me. After a second, she looked up to the top left as if she was thinking. "Umm, I think I will look for any hint of my family. Yeah, that's what I will do."

"That's a good plan." I smile at her.

"I think so too." After that reply, she went back to munching on her food. Finishing her meal, I can hear the bell ring once again.

The sun was setting, and Amiel and Ael weren't back again. This time I try not to worry myself like last time. I didn't want to end up looking stupid again. I know Ael would just tease me otherwise.

"They should be back soon, right?" Eira asked.

"Should be."

Just then, I can hear the door open. As I turned around, I was greeted by one irritated face and another energized one.

'What did he do to you, Amiel?'
