The Academy's formal hearing chamber was designed to be intimidating, and it succeeded admirably. High vaulted ceilings, imposing wooden furniture, and magical lighting that somehow made everyone look either guilty or nervous. Leo-Raelian took his seat at the respondents' table and tried to project confidence he didn't entirely feel.
The review board consisted of five individuals who radiated the kind of authority that came from decades of dealing with political complications. Dean Alderton presided from the center position, flanked by Academy officials Leo-Raelian didn't recognize and two representatives from noble family councils.
In the gallery behind them sat various interested parties, including Victor Blackstone with his parents, Helena's mother looking elegantly composed, and several other Academy faculty members.
"This inquiry," Dean Alderton began, "will examine recent security incidents involving Academy students, with particular focus on the appropriateness of student involvement and the implications for Academy policy."
Lady Blackstone, Victor's mother, leaned forward slightly. "Lord Dean, our primary concern is the Academy's apparent willingness to place first-year students in potentially lethal situations without adequate preparation or supervision."
"Noted, Lady Blackstone. However, the students in question were not placed in dangerous situations by Academy policy. They discovered ongoing security threats through their own initiative."
"Initiative," Lady Blackstone replied coolly, "that raises questions about how five untrained students managed to identify and neutralize professional infiltration operations that had evaded Academy security."
*And there it is. The core suspicion that we're either much more capable than we should be, or we had advance knowledge of the operations.*
"Mr. Voros," Dean Alderton said, turning to Leo-Raelian, "please describe your role in the initial discovery of security threats."
Leo-Raelian had spent most of the previous night preparing for this moment. "We organized student patrols because we were concerned about mysterious incidents in the east wing. During our first patrol, we overheard infiltrators discussing an extraction operation and alerted Academy security."
"What prompted you to organize these patrols rather than reporting your concerns through official channels?"
"The incidents were being investigated by Academy security, but we felt student perspectives might identify patterns that official investigations could miss." *Which is technically true, if incomplete.*
"And your combat training prior to Academy enrollment?"
"Basic household security education appropriate for minor nobility, supplemented by intensive study of Academy combat theory." *Also technically true, though 'intensive study' includes knowledge from my previous life's novel reading.*
One of the Academy officials consulted his notes. "Mr. Voros, your mathematical aptitude and theoretical magical knowledge appear unusually advanced for your background. Can you explain this discrepancy?"
*Here we go. Time for careful truth-telling.*
"I've always been interested in theoretical applications of magic and mathematics. My family encouraged independent study, and I found Academy preparatory materials particularly engaging." *True, if you count 'family' as including my previous life's education and 'preparatory materials' as including fantasy novels.*
Lady Blackstone was not satisfied. "Independent study rarely produces the kind of tactical thinking demonstrated during these security incidents. Your group's coordination and decision-making suggest significant prior experience or training."
Helena's mother chose that moment to speak. "Lady Blackstone, exceptional students occasionally demonstrate capabilities that exceed their formal training. My daughter's reports indicate Mr. Voros has natural analytical abilities well-suited to tactical situations."
*Thank you, Lady von Kessler. That's exactly the kind of character reference I needed.*
"Miss von Kessler," Dean Alderton continued, "please describe your family's involvement in your combat education."
Helena answered with diplomatic precision. "My family maintains security protocols appropriate for our political position. I received standard noble household defense training, which proved useful during recent incidents."
"And your decision to involve yourself in Academy security matters?"
"We discovered immediate threats to student safety that required rapid response. Academy security procedures are excellent for planned operations, but the situation demanded immediate action."
Marcus and Elena faced similar questioning about their technical capabilities and decision-making. Marcus's academic focus and Elena's research enthusiasm were easier to explain than Leo-Raelian's tactical insights, but all three faced scrutiny about their unusual effectiveness.
Garrett's questioning was mercifully brief, since his role had been primarily supportive and his background was exactly what it appeared to be.
"Mr. Windham," one of the board members asked, "did you have any reservations about your group's security activities?"
"Constantly," Garrett replied with complete honesty. "I thought most of our plans were terrifying and likely to get us killed. But I also didn't want my friends facing dangerous situations without support."
*Perfect answer. Completely honest and demonstrates appropriate caution while explaining his participation.*
The questioning continued for nearly two hours, covering every aspect of both security incidents in exhaustive detail. Leo-Raelian found himself impressed by the board's thoroughness and somewhat concerned by their ability to identify inconsistencies in testimony.
*Though so far, careful truth-telling seems to be working. They're suspicious, but they haven't identified anything that proves external coordination or advanced training.*
Finally, Dean Alderton called for a brief recess while the board deliberated. Leo-Raelian and his teammates were directed to a waiting room where they could discuss the proceedings quietly.
"Well," Helena said once the door closed, "that could have gone worse."
"Could it?" Garrett asked weakly. "Because I felt like they were trying to prove we're either spies or prodigies, and I'm not sure which would be worse."
"They're doing their job," Marcus observed. "Our story is unusual enough to warrant investigation, but consistent enough to be believable."
Elena looked thoughtful. "The technical questions about my research capabilities were interesting. I think they're more concerned about political implications than academic advancement."
"Meaning?" Leo-Raelian asked.
"Meaning they're trying to determine if we're politically dangerous rather than academically exceptional."
Before anyone could respond, Professor Blackthorne entered the waiting room.
"The board has reached preliminary conclusions," she announced. "You'll be recalled for the decision shortly."
"Any hints about which way they're leaning?" Helena asked.
"They're satisfied that your involvement was coincidental rather than coordinated, and that your capabilities, while impressive, are within the range of natural talent combined with Academy training."
Leo-Raelian felt a wave of relief. "So we're cleared?"
"You're cleared of suspicions about external coordination. However, the board has concerns about Academy policies allowing student involvement in dangerous situations."
"What kind of concerns?" Marcus asked.
"The kind that result in modified security protocols and enhanced supervision requirements."
*Translation: we're not in trouble, but our future activities are going to be much more restricted and monitored.*
They were recalled to the hearing chamber, where Dean Alderton delivered the board's findings.
"This inquiry finds no evidence of external coordination or inappropriate prior training among the student respondents. Their involvement in recent security incidents appears to have been coincidental and motivated by legitimate concerns about student safety."
*Relief. We passed the political scrutiny test.*
"However," Dean Alderton continued, "the Academy administration will implement enhanced protocols for student security activities. Future Junior Security Assistant operations will require direct faculty supervision, and students will not be permitted to initiate independent security investigations."
Lady Blackstone looked satisfied with this outcome. Helena's mother appeared pleased that her daughter had avoided political complications.
"Additionally," Dean Alderton concluded, "the Academy commends the students involved for their initiative, courage, and effectiveness in protecting their fellow students. While their methods were unorthodox, their results demonstrate exceptional potential for future security service."
*Commendation along with restrictions. We're officially recognized but unofficially constrained.*
As the hearing concluded and people began filing out of the chamber, Leo-Raelian reflected on the outcome. They'd successfully navigated political scrutiny without revealing problematic details about their backgrounds or capabilities, but they'd also learned that their activities were attracting attention from influential people with their own agendas.
*We're officially competent Academy security assets now, but also officially supervised and monitored. That's going to complicate future adventures significantly.*
Though given their track record, future adventures were probably inevitable whether officially sanctioned or not.
At least now they had official recognition and enhanced training to prepare for whatever complications lay ahead.
*Growth through effort,* he reminded himself. *Even when that effort involves surviving political inquiries and noble family scrutiny.*
It had been an educational morning.
