Gage approached, glanced at the car behind Maeve, gritted his teeth, and asked, "I have an apartment upstairs. Should we talk there or find a café outside?"
Maeve was worried about being photographed in public, so she said, "Let's go to your apartment, you lead the way." After speaking, she turned and waved to Donovan, who was sitting in the car.
Donovan mouthed "go ahead" to her with a smile.
Gage noted their interaction, his gaze darkening, and turned to enter the apartment courtyard. Maeve followed him into the elevator.
As the elevator rose slowly, the two remained silent, facing each other.
Gage had his hands in his pockets, his eyes unblinkingly staring at Maeve's reflection in the elevator door. Maeve didn't avoid his gaze; she looked at him too.
After several seconds of staring, the elevator arrived, and with a "ding," the door opened.
Gage withdrew his gaze and stepped out of the entryway elevator.
