I don't really have any friends in my offline life who are as deeply obsessed with Harry Potter as I am, so I thought I would share this right here with all of you! I've been closely tracking all the set leaks, teasers, and production details for the upcoming HBO show, and I compiled a list of book-accurate details we are confirmed to be getting.
The movies messed up significantly by cutting so many core details, but the show including them already makes it vastly more book-accurate and 100000 times better than the films ever were:
1. Authentic 1990s Setting: Unlike the movies which shifted into a 2000s aesthetic, the show is strictly adhering to the original 1990s timeline.
2. Prologue: We are getting the full "Bonfire Night" sequence mentioned on Muggle news ( and which McGonagall complains to Dumbledore about)Scenes of everyday witches and wizards celebrating across the country after the fall of Voldemort(indirectly tells how cruel was the first wizarding war), Uncle Vernon's "perfectly normal day" at Grunnings.
3. The Letters from Nobody: We get the entire sequence of Vernon driving the family to absurd, isolated locations just to escape the Hogwarts acceptance letters.
4. Bully Dudley, Petunia's Cruelty & Accidental Magic: We see Petunia forcefully shearing Harry's hair down to the scalp (leaving only his bangs to hide his scar) and harshly telling him "there will be nothing special about you"-a direct display of her emotional and physical abuse. This sets up Harry's accidental magic when his hair miraculously grows back overnight to protect him from the embarrassment. Harry being actively chased and bullied by Dudley's gang
5. The London Zoo Trip with Piers Polkiss: The zoo sequence includes Dudley's rat-faced friend Piers Polkiss, who was entirely cut from the first movie, highlighting how Dudley and his gang gang up on Harry in the Muggle world before the reptile house incident.
6. The Real Hermione: We see her asking other students, "Did you love the summer reading?" only for Lavender Brown to respond, "There was summer reading?" Watching Hermione's face fall captures her true book personality-awkward, overly academic, and socially out-of-step rather than Emma's polished "Miss Perfect" film version.
7. Authentic Ron Weasley: Ron says his signature "Oi!" and receives his Hogwarts letter surrounded by his chaotic, loving family, a beautiful contrast to Harry receiving his letters in isolation. His dynamic with Harry actually feels like a true best-friendship, unlike the movies where he was pushed aside to serve as mere comic relief.
8. Biting Scabbers: When Draco Malfoy, Crabbe, and Goyle enter Harry and Ron's compartment, Malfoy tries to intimidate them, and Goyle reaches out to steal some of their sweets. Scabbers latches onto Goyle's knuckle and doesn't let go
9. The Great Hall Magic: Food popping straight up onto the tables from below, which is a direct nod to the House-Elves working in the kitchens directly underneath, where identical tables are aligned to send the food popping straight up to the main tables above.
10. Peeves the Poltergeist: Hogwarts' resident terror is finally included! Peeves is a crucial character in the books after all, if he hadn't dropped and broken the Vanishing Cabinet in Cos, Draco wouldn't have spent an entire year trying to repair it in Hbp.
11. Complete Class Timetables: We are getting all the Hogwarts classes the first movie skipped-Herbology, History of Magic, Astronomy, and Transfiguration (including McGonagall having them turn matchsticks into needles).
12. Multiple Quidditch Matches: The teasers already confirm we are getting (Snape referee for this match)Gryffindor vs. Hufflepuff alongside Gryffindor vs. Slytherin.
13. Portrayal of Snape & Harry: a snarky, petty Snape in a scathing tone dropping harsh comments and Harry actively glaring right back at him.
14: Finding Fluffy: Neville being present with the trio when they first encounter Fluffy.
15: Hermione showing off her skills: Hermione performing a complex charm to animate and color Dean's poster.
16: Getting into a fight: Ron suffering a bloody lip from his fight alongside Neville against Malfoy and his goons.
17: Dumbledore meeting Nicolas Flamel: Dumbledore informs him of what happened at Hogwarts, and Flamel reveals his decision to destroy the Philosopher's Stone.
