Despite the scorching heat at the foot of the mountain, Tianlu Mountain is quite cool, with the dense canopy providing shade from most of the searing sun. The secluded forest is utterly silent, a silence soon broken.
On the rugged mountain path, a group of people stumbled forward with difficulty. Clad in plain cotton clothes, some carried baskets, others clutched bundles, and a few worked together to carry a frail boy in a lightly woven palanquin made of vines, carefully making their way upward.
