In the heart of a rural village, nestled amidst rolling hills, towering trees and sprawling fields in Osun state, lived a family of 3. At the center of their world was a bright-eyed, curly-haired 9-year-old girl named Sade; her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Ojo both being in their mid-sixties.
Sade was the apple of her parents' eyes, a beacon of joy in their otherwise arduous lives. As poor farmers, they toiled from dawn till dusk, their weathered hands a testament to their tireless efforts to make ends meet. Despite their hardship, Sade's presence brought warmth and love into their home.
However, all was not well within the family. Sade's parents often engaged in heated arguments, their frustrations just beneath the surface. When tensions boiled over, her father would hurl hurtful words at her mother, branding her "a witch" and blaming her for their misfortune and their childless years. They had been childless for so many years before they had Sade. In response. Her mother would lament her decision to marry Sade's father, claiming she could have had a better life with a wealthier suitor
This quarrel weighed heavily on Sade's heart. She would retreat to her tiny room, clinging to her tattered doll for comfort, as angry voices filled the house. Yet even amidst the turmoil, she never stopped hoping for a better tomorrow
Sade dreamed of going to school, her bright mind yearning to learn and explore the world beyond her village. But her parents' financial struggles made this an impossible luxury. Still, her dreams refused to be quelled, her indomitable spirit finding solace in the beauty of nature around her
As she wandered the fields and forests, Sade found refuge from the troubles at home. And in those quiet moments, she dared to dream of a future where love and understanding would heal her family's wounds, and where she could learn and grow beyond the confines of her small world
One hot afternoon, an unexpected visitor arrived at their doorstep. Sade's father immediately recognized him as Micheal Adebayo, the son of Mr. Olamuyiwa Adebayo, his old primary school classmate, who had moved to the city the city years ago. The visitor had come to check on his elderly father and was taken aback by the humble living condition of Sade's family
During his stay, he stuck up a conversation with Sade's parents and learned of their struggles, including their desire to provide an education for their precious Sade. Seeing an opportunity to help, he offered to take Sade to the city in Abuja with him, where she could live with his family and attend school
Sade's parents were initially hesitant, torn between their parental instincts to keep their daughter close and their desire to give her the beat possible future. They discussed the matter at length, weighing the pros and cons, and ultimately decided that it's best if Sade went with him as they thought Sade's wellbeing and educate were of utmost importance
With heavy hearts, they accepted the kind visitor's offer, knowing that their daughter's life was about to change forever. They relayed the news to Sade the morning. Sade's eyes widened in surprise, her heart fluttering with a mixture of excitement and apprehension. She could hardly believe what she was hearing-the possibility of finally attending school, a dream that had always seemed so far out of reach
"Really, Daddy?" She asked, her voice barely above a whisper
Her father nodded, "Yes, Sade. He will take good care of you and make sure you get the education we could never provide for you"
Sade's mother, who had been quietly listening, spoke up. "We want what's best for you, Sade. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and we believe it's the right thing to do"
Sade looked between her parents, a whirlwind of emotions stirring within her. She felt a surge of gratitude for the selflessness of her parents' decision, but also a pang of sadness at the thought of leaving them behind
"But…. what about you, Mummy and Daddy? I don't want to leave you," Sade said, her voice trembling with worry
Her father gently stroked her hair, his eyes filled with love and reassurance. "We will miss you, Sade, but this is for your future"
Sade swallowed back her tears, summoning her courage as she realized the magnitude of this moment. She would embark on a journey far from the only home she had ever known
"Okay, Daddy," she said, hugging him tightly. "I promise to make you proud"
As the day of departure drew near, the family savored their final moments together, knowing their lives were about to take a dramatic turn

*October 2nd 2053*
One fateful day, as the school bell rang, signaling the end of classes, Sade said to Timothy, "I'm going to stay back and study with Ada today. So, you'll be going home without me"
Timothy looked at her, surprised but understanding "Oh, sure. Just don't stay too long"
"Sure, I won't" Sade said
"I'll see you at home. Later" Timothy said flashing a warm smile
As Timothy and the other students made their ways home, Sade and Ada settled down in a nearly empty library surrounded by the comforting scent of old books. They exchanged notes, quizzed each other and discussed strategies for upcoming exams
As Sade and Ada continued studying, they failed to notice the passing of time. The once vibrant school was now dark and empty save for the two friends engrossed in their books. It wasn't until a beam of flashlight swept across their table that they realized just how late it had gotten
The school's gateman stood before them, a mix of surprise and concern etched on his face. "Girls, what are you doing here at this hour?" he asked, shaking his head. "It's 8:43pm"
Sade and Ada exchanged startled glances, their eyes widening as they fumbled for their phones. "We're so sorry sir" Sade stammered, her heart pounding in her chest. "We were studying and lost track of time"
As they unlocked their phones, a series of notifications flooded their screens. "Wow! 15 missed calls?!" Sade exclaimed; her voice filled with worry
Ada quickly scrolled down through her own notifications, her eyes mirroring Sade's concern. "They must be worried sick. We should go home," she said urgently packing her books and notes
Sade followed suit, her hands trembling as she gathered her belongings. With one final apology to the gateman, the two friends hurried towards the school gate, their footsteps echoing through the empty corridors
As Sade and Ada left the school, they decided it would be best if they walked home together. The soft glow of the streetlights cast eerie shadows on the pavement as they walked, their footsteps echoing through the stillness of the night
Upon arrival at Ada's house, the girls exchanged a quick hug, their shared experience bonding them even closer than before.
"Goodnight, Sade," Ada whispered, her voice tinged with concern "Text me when you get home, okay?"
Sade nodded gratefully for her friend's thoughtfulness. "Sure. See you tomorrow" she replied, forcing a smile as she waved goodbye
Ada watched as Sade walked disappeared into the darkness, her silhouette growing smaller with each passing moment. With one final wave, Ada stepped inside her house, warmth and familiarity a welcome contrast to the unease that had settled over her
Meanwhile, Sade continued her journey home alone, her thoughts consumed by the events of the day. The cold night air seemed to seep into her bones, a stark reminder of the vulnerability she felt as she walked the quiet streets
As Sade traversed the deserted streets, the silence of the night was shattered by the eerie feeling of being watched. She quickened her pace, her heart racing with every step. Suddenly, a stranger emerged from the shadows, his footsteps echoing hers. Panic set in as she hastened her pace, but the stranger kept pace with her
In desperate bid to escape, Sade turned a corner and collided with an unknown figure. As she struggled to break free, she was surrounded by 5 men, their faces obscured by the darkness. They dragged her to a hidden lair and Sade's world was plunge into chaos
The experience of a blur of terror and helplessness. Sade however struggled to break free but they were too strong for her. They raped her brutally one after the other. Sade who couldn't withstand it, lost consciousness. The men left Sade upon seeing that she was unconscious. Sade laid down unconscious until the next morning. A strange man, dressed in suit, passing by, on his way to work, saw Sade lying unconscious by the roadside. He immediately took her to the hospital and ensured she was attended to her before leaving for his office
Mrs. Adebayo gently held Sade's hand as she gazed at her with a mixture of worry and concern. The news of Sade's hospitalization had shaken the Adebayos, prompting them to rush to her side immediately. Timothy, his heart heavy with worry, had chosen to stay by Sade's side rather than go to school that day
"My dear Sade, are you okay?" Mrs. Adebayo asked, her voice trembling "What happened to you?"
Sade, her eyes downcast, found herself unable to speak. The traumatic memories of the incident flooded her mind, and she simply couldn't bring herself to relive them
Observing her silence, Timothy decided to share the information he got from the doctor. "The doctor said that a young man brought you here, paid for your treatment and made sure you received the necessary care before he left"
Mrs. Adebayo's eyes welled up in gratitude. "What a kind and noble soul," she said, her voice tinged with emotion. "Wherever he may be, may God bless him for his selfless act"
"Amen," echoed the other three in unison
Sade, feeling a wave of emotion wash over her, looked up at the Adebayos. Despite the pain and trauma, she had endured, she couldn't help but feel grateful for the love and support they showed her. They had stood by her through it all, and their presence now was a comforting reminder that she was not alone
As the Adebayos stayed by Sade's side, offering their comfort and encouragement, she felt the first stirrings of hope within her
Upon her discharge from the hospital, Sade focused on regaining her strength and sense of normalcy. After a week of rest, she returned to school, where her classmates greeted her with warmth and kindness. The traumatic event of that fateful night remained unspoken as Sade desperately wanted to forget and move past the incident
*December 12th 2053*
Sade's life took an unexpected turn when she discovered she was pregnant. The news was a devastating blow, forcing her to confront the painful memories she had tried so hard to suppress
The car ride home from the clinic was fraught with tension as Mr. and Mrs. Adebayo struggled to process the news of Sade's pregnancy. Unaware of the traumatic events that had transpired on that fateful night, they could not fathom how their beloved Sade had ended up in this predicament
Upon arriving at the house, Mr. Adebayo's anger boiled over. Clutching one of his brown belts, he demanded to know who was responsible for Sade's condition
"I don't know" Sade replied, her voice trembling as tears streamed down her face
"Honey, she is pregnant." Mrs. Adebayo interjected, concern evident in her voice "You can't beat a pregnant woman, no matter what." She gently took the belt from her husband's hand, hoping to diffuse the situation
While Mrs. Adebayo prevented any physical harm from coming to Sade, it was clear that she too felt a deep sense of disappointment. The couple had always held Sade in high regard, and this turn of events left them questioning everything they thought they knew about the girl they had come to see as a family
As the weight of her caregivers' disappointment bore down on her, Sade sank to her knees, sobbing uncontrollably. Never had she felt so lost and alone, the events of that night once again threatening to consume her
Sade's silence, punctuated only by her repeated insistence that she didn't know who impregnated her, left Mr. Adebayo seething with frustration. Unable to contain his anger, he issued an ultimatum
"If you don't want to talk, then go pack your things," he said, his voice icy with disappointment. "First thing tomorrow morning, I'm taking you back to your parents in Osun state
With that, Mr. Adebayo stormed out of the living room, the sound of his footsteps echoing through the house as he made his way to his bedroom
Mrs. Adebayo, her face etched with worry turned to Sade, her heart aching for the girl she had come to love as her own. She knew that beneath the surface of this predicament lay a deeper, more painful truth, but without Sade's willingness to share, her hands were tied
The morning sun cast its golden rays upon the village in Osun state as Mr. Adebayo's car pulled up to Sade's family home. The journey had been a somber one, with Sade's silent tears serving as a constant reminder the painful circumstances that had brough them here
Exiting the car, Mr. Adebayo saw Sade's father sitting outside the house. He took a deep breath, steeling himself for the difficult conversation that lay ahead
"I have brought your daughter back home." Mr. Adebayo said, his voice heavy with regret
Sade's father looked up; surprise etched on his face. "My son, calm down," he said, his voice laced with concern. "What did she do?"
Mr. Adebayo hesitated for a moment before delivering the news. "Sade is pregnant," he said, the words hanging in the air between them
Sade's father's eyes widened in shock, his gaze immediately turning to his daughter. Sade, overwhelmed by the weight of her situation, began to cry once more
Mr. Adebayo, his heart aching for Sade and her family, continued. "The most difficult part is that she kept insisting she doesn't know who is responsible. So, I decided it was best to bring her back here, to her family."
Sade's father, still process the news, nodded slowly. As Mr. Adebayo unloaded Sade's bags, a heavy silence settled over them. The unspoken truth hung in the air; its weight almost tangible'
With a final, mournful glance at Sade, Mr. Adebayo got back into his car and zoomed off, leaving Sade with her father to grapple with the reality of their situation
As the dust from Mr. Adebayo's car settled, Sade's father turned to his daughter, his eyes filled with a mixture of disappointment and anger "Sade, who got you pregnant?"
Just as Sade's father finished speaking, Sade's mother appeared, carrying a basket of farm tools. Surprise to see her daughter at home, she asked "what's going on here?"
Sade's father, his face etched with pain, repeated the news, "your daughter is pregnant"
Sade's mother's eyes widened in disbelief. "Wha did you say?" she asked, her voice barely a whisper
"Sade is pregnant," Sade's father repeated, his tone heavy with disappointment and anger. "And worst of all, she doesn't even know who got her pregnant"
Sade's mother turned to her daughter, her eyes searching for answers. "Is this true?" she asked
Sade, her heart breaking under the weight of her parents' disappointment, could only manage a choked plea. "Mummy, I'm sorry." She said, tears streaming down her face
Without a word, Sade's mother angrily walked into the house, the silence speaking volumes
Sade's father, his anger and frustration reaching a boiling point, pointed a cutlass at her. It was the same cutlass his wife brought back. "Leave my house now!" he ordered, his voice shaking with rage as he chased Sade away
With her world crumbling around her, Sade made the heart-wrenching decision to flee to a place where no one knew her, where she could start anew and escape the painful memories of her past. She gathered the savings she had accumulated from the monthly allowance provided by the Adebayos, and with that, she set off to Lagos, hoping to begin a new chapter in her life
Upon her arrival in the bustling city, Sade found work at a local restaurant, determined to earn a living and create a stable foundation for herself. For three months, she toiled in the kitchen, learning the ins and outs of the business and forming a bond with her kind-hearted boss
As time went on, Sade's resilience and dedication caught the attention of her boss, who saw potential in the young lady and wanted to help her achieve her dreams. With his assistance, Sade was able to open her own restaurant-a small but welcoming establishment that soon became a favourite among locals
With success of her restaurant, Sade was able to rent a modest 3 bed room flat, a symbol of her new found independence and fresh start she had so desperately sought

Back to the present
"And then few months later, precisely on September 16th 2054, I had you, Tosin" Sade said, sitting on Tosin's bed "you are my only source of joy"
"Wow, mum, " Tosin replied, her face mix with awe, empathy and anger. "I had no idea you'd been through so much"
Sade smiled, "It wasn't easy, that's for sure. But I wouldn't trade it for anything else" she said
"Henceforth, my name is Oluwatosin Folasade!" Tosin declared
Sade's eyes widened in surprise as Tosin made her declaration. "Oluwatosin Folasade," she repeated, testing the name on her tongue. A warm smile spread across her face, her heart swelling with pride and gratitude. "I'm honoured, sweetheart. I know you will make that name ring out across the world"
Tosin beamed, her determination and passion shining through. "I promise I will. Mum, I'll make you proud."
As mother and daughter shared this tender moment, the weight of Sade's past seemed to lift, replaced by a promise of a bright future. Wiping away her tears, Sade held Tosin's hands in hers
"You already have, my dear Oluwatosin Folasade. You already have."
