Chapter 9 - Why Be A Hero

The thought passed me for quite a few minutes. Sitting here thinking about what could or couldn't be done, nah.

Being a hero isn't the path for me but I definitely think that it is possible for me to do something. Not everyone is meant to be a hero but I'm definitely no villain either.

The best of both worlds is needed sometimes.

~Choices, Choices. How lovely it must be to have that option— I mean why don't you decide and I'll reward you for it. Maybe that'll be a good incentive. ( ◜•◝ )♡.

You sure are handing out a lot of rewards to me lately. I guess that's kind of normal for getting early levels in games right?

It would make sense why you are helping so much, or extra to be exact.

~I'm just doing my job as your system, nothing more. ^^.

I'll figure out my decision by the end of the night since I'm exhausted. Everything is hitting me hard right now and I don't even know if my brother is going to live.

Why be a hero when you can't save anyone you care about? That's kind of what I'm thinking right now.

Regardless a hero can't always save everyone either so it is a losing role most of the time. There will also always be stronger heroes out there who make you look bad to the public.

That only matters because people won't support you as a hero if you can't do something that another one can. At least that's my mindset with it.

I immediately lose my train of thought when I noticed a girl sitting across from me with pink hair and some sort of weird hero costume on.

She has short pink hair with some bangs in front of her face, pink eyes with these weird spirals to them, and she seems to be playing on her phone.

The costume itself seems cool at least. Some strange chibi cat is the logo on her chest with this silver color to the whole suit.

"You like what you see or something?" She asks without even looking up from the phone.

"I was just caught off guard by your appearance." I respond with a bit of nervousness.

"Something wrong with it?" She questions.

"Not at all. Just, you're a hero right?" I respond with my own question.

"Silver Neko. That's my name of course." She answers with a bit of a smile on her face.

She still didn't look up from her phone but I could hear some people in the room whispering about her. Something about her being the #15 ranking hero in the commission.

But other than the people whispering I could hear the little sounds from whatever game she was playing.

"Never really heard of you. I just don't pay a lot of attention to the hero stuff on TV." I say before leaning back in the chair.

Obviously I never really did pay attention to any of the stuff on TV, I never really had interest in it to begin with. It was usually the same crap over and over again anyway.

This hero saved that or this hero did this type of thing. It kind of got old quick in my opinion.

She stood up from her chair out of nowhere and immediately came over and took a seat next to me. "You like games?" She asks with a bit of curiosity in her voice.

I couldn't help but notice the fragrance she has on, it reminded me of cherry blossoms.

"Sometimes. I haven't had time for them in awhile." I reply with nervousness still in my voice.

"This one happens to be one of my favorites." She says while showing me the screen.

I can see a little tiny cat holding a sword, fighting off some sort of weird cutesy monsters. It was one of those kinds of games that I would probably never play.

She seems to enjoy it from the looks of it.

I personally never played mobile games much since I worked all the time and even games at home were a luxury. My console is probably broken at this point though.

It's probably for the best anyway. I didn't need to waste that time when I have a lot more stuff to do now... Especially with the awakening of this system.

~True! True! We have a lot to accomplish and you have a choice to make so I know what kind of quests to give you going forward. (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻.

I'll come to my decision by tomorrow probably. I just need time to think on everything and make sure I know that it is the right choice.

I do know I won't be a hero so that is definitely off the table here. The best of both worlds is where I reside still.

~So, not a villain or a hero. A vigilante perhaps? But I believe they can also be considered a hero. ^_^.

You're definitely not making this easy for me in the slightest but I guess you're right. I can't really disagree with that, but I'll figure it out by tomorrow.

I doubt I could ever kill anyone... I'm definitely not fit to be a villain. They have it in them to kill people without any hesitation.

Heroes don't seem to do any killing from what I know, some vigilantes do though. So they would technically be considered the best of both worlds.

"Must be paying close attention since you haven't said anything." Silver Neko says, breaking the silence.

"Y-Yeah. Just think it's pretty cool." I reply with a bit of hesitation at first.

I totally wasn't distracted and having a side conversation with my system who wants me to make a choice with my life. All of this is happening while I'm trying not to fall apart with the loss of my family.

"I think it is better to get lost in games sometimes since it can help you ignore the shitty reality that we live in." Silver Neko says with a casual tone.

"It really does help with that, doesn't it." I respond while looking up from her phone.
