For a moment, Kael remained frozen in the doorway, his lust energy beginning to swirl in his core. The way the dress clung to her figure, the faint scent of her perfume, the confidence in her posture—it all combined to create an image that was far removed from his usual perception of her as simply "mother."
Lyra's eyes fell on him as well, and he could see her noticing the way he was staring at her.
"Kael," she called out, her voice carrying a note of concern.
"Yes..." Kael startled, shaking himself from his momentary trance. "Yes, Mother."
"Are you fine?" she asked, tilting her head slightly as she studied his face. "You look... different. Flushed."
Kael ran a hand through his hair, trying to compose himself and push down the inappropriate thoughts that his lust energy seemed to be amplifying. "I'm fine. Just... still waking up, I suppose. I slept longer than I intended."
Lyra stepped closer, and the movement caused the silk of her dress to shift in ways that made it even more difficult for Kael to maintain his composure. "You slept through most of the day. I was beginning to worry."
"Where are you going?" he asked, hoping to redirect the conversation away from his obvious discomfort. "That dress... it's beautiful, but not something you usually wear around the house."
A smile crossed Lyra's lips, and there was something almost pleased about his compliment. "Thank you. Your father and I are attending a dinner at the Blackwood estate. Some of the barony's more prominent families are gathering to discuss recent events and... other matters."
She paused, her eyes still studying him with that same curious expression. "Actually, that's why I'm here. They've invited you as well. After your awakening yesterday, people are eager to meet with our family, to discuss your future prospects."
Kael nodded, understanding the political implications. His purple awakening had changed his family's social status overnight, and now they were being included in gatherings that would have been far above their station just days ago.
"I should get dressed then," he said, stepping back slightly to create some distance between them.
"Yes, you should," Lyra agreed, but she didn't immediately move away from his doorway. Instead, she remained there for a moment longer, her gaze lingering on his face with an expression that seemed to be evaluating something she couldn't quite identify.
"Kael," she said finally, her voice softer now, "is everything alright? Since last night, you seem... different somehow. More mature, perhaps, but also more intense."
The observation was uncomfortably accurate. His encounters with the necromancers, his confrontation with Arthur, his growing awareness of his own capabilities and desires—all of it had changed him in ways that were apparently visible to those who knew him well.
"I suppose recent events have given me a lot to think about," he replied carefully. "Learning about threats to our village, understanding more about how the world works... it's a lot to process."
Lyra nodded slowly, seemingly accepting this explanation, though something in her eyes suggested she sensed there was more to it than he was letting on.
"Well," she said finally, taking a small step back, "get yourself ready. We'll be leaving within the hour. And Kael?"
"Yes?"
"Wear something nice. Tonight could be very important for your future."
As she turned to leave, the movement caused her dress to swirl around her figure in a way that once again drew his attention to her curves. Only when she had disappeared down the hallway did Kael allow himself to close the door and lean back against it, taking a shaky breath.
His lust energy was still swirling actively in his core. He was going to have to learn to control these reactions better, especially in social situations where such responses could create serious problems.
As he locked the door behind him, Nyx appeared right in front of him, catching him off-guard.
"Isn't she beautiful and alluring?" Nyx asked with a knowing smile, her green eyes sparkling with mischief.
Kael laughed, running a hand through his hair as he tried to process what had just happened with his mother. "Yes, she sure is. Has to be one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen."
Nyx had a way of drawing out his most honest thoughts, even when they ventured into uncomfortable territory.
Nyx closed the distance between them, her hands reaching for his chest "Well, why don't you shoot your shot with her?"
Kael's heart began hammering against his ribs at her suggestion. The very idea sent his pulse racing, and before he could think better of it, he managed to grab her waist and pull her close towards him. Their bodies pressed together, and he could feel the warmth of her presence
"I will surely," he said, his voice husky with desire, "but how about I shoot my chance with you right now?"
"My, my, what a bold man you are," Nyx teased, her lips now tantalizingly close to his, her breath warm against his skin.
Her eyes held a challenge, as if daring him to make the move that would cross the line they had been dancing around for so long. Her hands moved from his chest to his shoulders, and he could feel her fingers tracing circles that sent shivers through his entire body.
Just as he was about to close that final distance between their lips, a sharp knock on the door startled them both.
