HARPER
I barely made it into Clara's living room before I broke down, collapsing on the floor.
Clara stood there, stunned and silent as she stared at me. I hadn't said a word yet. I'd only called to say I was coming over, and I guessed she hadn't expected me to show up wheeling a big suitcase behind me.
Maybe it was a bad idea to come here. I could have gone to the same hotel I stayed at the first time I left, but I needed my friend. I needed Clara right now.
She was the only person who hadn't lied to me. The only one who would tell me the truth without hiding anything.
I really was stupid, going around trusting people. Now, it was clear I was still the naive girl I'd been in the Wilson family. I hadn't learned my lesson at all.
"Okay," Clara's voice cut through my sobs, "do I need to call my boss? Because this is not the person I expected to see."
"I'm sorry," I choked out between sobs, my body shaking. "I don't mean to ruin your day."
