Chapter 61 - [DEM] 61: Covert Investigation

Defection wasn't a big deal for Ada Wong.

As a spy, her moral compass was flexible.

If it benefited her, jumping ship was no issue.

The problem was, she didn't trust Morpheus. And his request was dangerous—investigating Umbrella? Did he think Wesker was incompetent?

If she got caught, she'd be dead.

Between imprisonment and death, Ada chose life.

After all, only the living had options. Death ended everything.

Seeing her silence, Morpheus guessed her thoughts. "If you won't agree, you'll stay in Tokyo until you rot."

He ordered Blackwatch to guard her, forbidding her from leaving the shooting range club or contacting anyone outside.

Medea, observing, said lightly, "Why bother, Boss? If you don't want to deal with her, leave her to me. I'll teach her her place."

Morpheus glanced at Medea, his magic mentor. He couldn't easily dismiss her.

Besides, she was looking out for him.

"Fine, she's yours."

Medea smiled. "Leave it to me, Boss."

She took Ada away.

About half an hour later, Medea returned with her.

Morpheus scanned Ada. No signs of inhumane treatment, no marks on her skin.

Yet her attitude had flipped completely.

"I'll help you investigate Umbrella," Ada said the moment she saw him, pledging her unwavering loyalty.

Morpheus shot Medea a surprised look. "How'd you do it?"

Ada hadn't been brainwashed, yet her change was absolute.

And the fear in her eyes when she looked at Medea was bone-deep.

What had Medea done to her?

Medea placed a finger to her lips, whispering, "It's… a secret."

Morpheus chuckled at her playful mystery.

Fine, a secret it was.

As long as Ada was on his side, that was enough.

He wasn't one to pry relentlessly, so he gave Medea a thumbs-up.

"Well done."

"Thanks for the praise, Boss."

After Ada's defection, Morpheus didn't send her back immediately. Instead, he warmly invited her and Blackwatch to the Umbrella Tokyo branch.

This was to mislead Wesker and Umbrella's higher-ups.

In a few days, once Ada's "investigation" was complete, Wesker would recall her to headquarters.

Then, she could begin her real mission.

As for what they'd find at the Tokyo branch, Morpheus had already prepared a cover story.

It was convincing enough to dispel Umbrella's suspicions.

Days passed in a flash.

The investigation at the Tokyo branch went smoothly.

With Morpheus's cooperation, Ada soon reported her findings to Wesker via video conference.

"You were right. There's a traitor in the Tokyo branch."

"Who?" Wesker asked, seated behind a red desk, hands clasped under his chin, eyes glinting coldly.

Ada replied, "A researcher named Robert. He was turned and leaked Umbrella's confidential plans, disrupting operations."

"Robert?"

Wesker racked his brain but drew a blank. With so many researchers at Umbrella, he couldn't possibly remember them all.

"Bring him back. I'll interrogate him myself."

"Got it," Ada nodded.

Wesker suddenly asked, "You've been in Tokyo a few days. What's your impression of the branch president, Allen?"

Ada said, "Just a polished egoist."

Wesker pressed, "Do you think he's connected to this?"

Ada raised an eyebrow. "You think Allen betrayed Umbrella?"

"Not betrayed," Wesker clarified. "I suspect he's making moves behind our backs."

Ada asked, "Should I stay and dig deeper?"

Wesker fell silent, considering.

After a moment, he shook his head. "No need. Just bring Robert back."

"Alright, I'll head back tomorrow."

Wesker grunted, cutting the connection.

After the video conference, Morpheus appeared before Ada.

"Be careful on your way back."

Ada smiled. "I will, Boss."

The next day, she led Blackwatch out of the Tokyo branch.

Morpheus thought that was the end of it, but he underestimated Wesker's caution. That evening, he got a call from the real Allen.

"Boss, someone's investigating me."

Though the Tokyo branch president had been replaced by Morpheus and relegated to cleaning toilets, his loyalty—cemented by brainwashing—remained absolute.

When trouble arose, Morpheus was his first call.

Hearing someone was probing Allen, Morpheus grew curious. Who was it?

He sent a message to Medea, tasking her with investigating.

"No problem, Boss," Medea replied, diving into the task.

Soon after, she rounded up the investigators and brought them to Morpheus.

They were ordinary humans, elite by mortal standards, but to Medea, they were like toddlers learning to walk.

No threat at all—she took them down effortlessly.

Morpheus didn't hold back. Using his powerful mental abilities, he read their memories.

What he found was very intriguing.
