Chapter 54 - Chapter 54 The Lizard Doctor Bewitched by the Demon

When Hawke and Gwen arrived on the second floor, the Lizard Doctor had vanished, replaced by Dr. Connors, who had reverted to human form, but whose chest wound remained irreversible.

Blood trickled from Dr. Connors' mouth, but he forced a smile as he looked at Hawke approaching.

"Thank you!"

  "..."

Hawke didn't speak, only raising an eyebrow at Dr. Connors.

Gwen, standing beside him, asked, somewhat puzzled, "Doctor, why did you kill me?"

She couldn't understand.

If Dr. Connors was after the Williamsburg Bridge incident, he should have been looking for Spider-Man.

If Dr. Connors wanted blood, he should have been looking for Hawke.

Why was he targeting her?

Leaning against the wall, Dr. Connors, utterly exhausted, chuckled at Gwen's question.

But as his chest heaved, a flush of red appeared on Dr. Connors' pale face.

With a soft "poof," he coughed up a mouthful of blood, his breath growing extremely weak.

On his deathbed, as he was about to close his eyes forever, Dr. Connors uttered his last words.

"I don't know."

"Maybe..."

"I was bewitched by a demon."

"Yes..."

"...I'm sorry!"

*Thump!*

With these barely uttered words, Dr. Connors's single left arm fell to the floor with a crisp thud.

Dr. Connors was dead!

Seeing this, Hawke withdrew his gaze from Dr. Connors's corpse and said to the spider demon standing beside him, "Aren't you leaving?" Peter ,still in shock at how a single punch had taken Dr. Connors's life, snapped out of his daze and looked at Hawke.

"And what about you?"

"The spider demon killed him, what does that have to do with me, Hawk?"

"I'm not a spider demon."

"Then your spider silk..."

"I'm leaving first."

Peter didn't waste any words, turned around, shot out a spider silk, spun in the air, pierced the glass window in the ceiling with his toe, and disappeared from Hawk and Gwen's sight after passing through the window.

Just then.

Gwen also reacted, as if she had thought of something, exclaimed, and then pulled Hawk down to the library's surveillance room.

"No, the surveillance."

"Don't worry, it didn't capture anything."

"Ah."

"The place I attacked was a blind spot, I could only see Dr. Lizard flying backward, I couldn't see who attacked."

Hawk explained with a smile as Gwen pulled him downstairs.

This might be fate.

He really didn't care about being exposed, he didn't know it was a blind spot when he attacked, he only found out after he attacked.

So it had nothing to do with him.

Maybe, just maybe, God felt that it wasn't time for him to be exposed.

If God exists.

Half an hour later.

New York Police Department officers carried Dr. Connors, whose body was already cold, out of the library.

Sheriff George Stacy of the 19th Manhattan Precinct also arrived at the scene.

"Gwen!"

George got out of the car and rushed to Gwen, then hugged her tightly.

"Thank God, you're alright."

"Dad."

After Gwen broke free from George's embrace, she glanced at Hawke, then took Hawke's right hand and said to George, "Hawk protected me."

George then looked at Hawke.

Hawke greeted her politely as always.

"Mr. Stacy."

"Thank you."

Unlike last time when he ignored Hawke, this time George nodded slightly and thanked Hawke.

Hawke smiled and said, "It's what I should do."

George didn't speak, but glanced at Gwen and Hawke, who were holding hands in front of him, before saying to Gwen, "Call Helen.

She's very worried after the news reported that Midtown High School was attacked by lizardmen."

Gwen then remembered that she had forgotten to call her mother, exclaimed in surprise, and quickly took out her phone from her pocket to call her mother, Helen.

After Gwen ran off to make a phone call, George stood beside Hawke, looking at Dr. Connors being put into a body bag not far away: "So, Dr. Lizard is Dr. Connors, but what's he doing at the school?"

Hawke's heart skipped a beat, but he shook his head expressionlessly: "I don't know."

He was thinking about Dr. Connors's dying words.

Bewitched by a demon.

Good heavens.

What kind of demon could bewitch Dr. Connors to ignore the Spider-Man he fought on the Williamsburg Bridge, and Hawke, whose blood seemed so important to him, and instead target the harmless Gwen?

It doesn't make sense.

Unless this demon isn't a legitimate one.

Hawke thought silently.

Unfortunately…

Dr. Connors is dead, and this question will likely never be answered.

Soon.

After letting her mother, Helen, know she was safe, Gwen walked over with a relaxed air and naturally took Hawke's arm. "Got you safe with Mom?"

George glanced at his daughter's natural gesture, his lips twitching subtly, before deciding to leave.

He had to leave; he was afraid he might lose control and shoot Hawke.

Half an hour later, with the departure of the Queens Precinct and Sergeant George Stacy of the 19th Precinct, Midtown High School announced an early dismissal.

The students, still reeling from the shock of Spider-Man vs. the Lizard, snapped out of their daze upon hearing the decision, shouting praises of the school's wisdom before galloping towards the parking lot like wild horses.

Hawke shook his head, too lazy to ponder why Dr. Connors had done this.

He was already dead.

Thinking about it was pointless.

Weekend.

Because it was the weekend, Hawke was holed up in his new apartment, surfing the internet with the hotspot from the phone Skye had given him—a computer Skye had sold him.

He was taking advantage of the weekend to relax and planned to search online to see if he could sell the five weapons he'd seized from killing the Zeta Swiss soldiers, which he'd hidden under his bed.

He had to sell them.

He needed to find a way to make money, otherwise, he wouldn't even have enough for a dress to wear to his prom.

Although theoretically he wasn't short of money now, the Spider-Woman, corrupted by Venom, had a worst desire: to buy a discounted suit.

Hawke felt he wasn't as morally upright as the original Spider-Woman, but he couldn't be too far behind.

Just as he was searching online for places to sell them, there was a thud outside the window.

Hawke looked up.

The Spider-Woman he'd just been thinking about was peering through the fire escape stairs outside his window.   ...
