Chapter 640 - Chapter 640: Executing the Mission

The smoke was still rising when Todoroki Shoto walked out of it.

The moment he cleared the debris field, the temperature dropped — not dramatically, not as a weapon, just as a consequence of his presence, the cold half of him bleeding into the air around him. The fires the explosion had started went out within a minute, smothered under a fall of snow that radiated outward from where he stood. The rubble's surface acquired a thin layer of frost.

He looked at where the rooftop had been and at what was left of the surrounding structures.

"He teleported out," he said. "The moment before the blast. I felt it." He was not satisfied. At his current speed, Sesshōmaru's line-of-sight displacement was not something he could reliably intercept. The explosion had been the only tool available that didn't require closing distance first.

What he hadn't seen, from inside the detonation's origin point, was Sesshōmaru reappearing outside its radius with several holes burned through his kimono by the residual flames — small damage, nothing structural, but visible. For a creature that presented itself as a noble among monsters, the indignity of singed silk was its own category of injury.

Sesshōmaru had looked at the retreating SWORD members, calculated the cost of pursuit against the requirement to remain at Orochi's side, and let them go.

Todoroki Shoto had seen the calculation resolve, watched the decision land in the creature's posture. He used his cold air to condense the surrounding ground into a slick of ice and slid quickly along it toward his teammates.

The Night Parade had dispersed into the city.

The monsters and demons that had assembled in the white fog around the General's Mansion were moving now in small groups, spreading through the Flower Capital's streets with purpose. The Karasu-Tengu led the largest contingent — efficient, fast, making the kind of impression on the God's Knights that the God's Knights had not expected to make on anything tonight. Sesshōmaru remained behind with Orochi, which left the shogun defended by one entity that had just demonstrated what it could do to a sniper's skull.

The God's Knights were discovering that the math of this operation was not what their briefings had suggested.

"We need to leave the capital," Grus said. "This is about to become the main theater. Too much happening at once, too little room to maneuver."

Nobody argued. They moved from the rooftop level down to the streets, then through the Flower Capital's edge districts, using the chaos as cover. The evacuation took ten minutes. Some flying monsters crossed their path during it; the team dealt with each quickly and kept moving.

They were almost clear of the capital when the Den Den Mushi rang.

The snail's face had arranged itself into the configuration of a plant — unmistakably Aramaki's.

"Drake's life card burned out," Aramaki said, when Grus connected. "What happened?"

Grus gave him the account in the fewest words that covered it accurately: Sesshōmaru, the light whip, Drake dead before he could respond, Todoroki Shoto's explosion as the only available countermeasure, current status of the team.

Aramaki was quiet for a moment on the other end.

He knew the relationship between Drake and these people. Drake had built the SWORD team before his cover assignment had taken him away from it — he had been the captain who had shaped it, and the members who remained were the people he had shaped. The notification that he was gone had arrived as a burned life card rather than a conversation, which was the way it usually arrived, and it was never easier for being expected.

"There's no time to address that properly right now," Aramaki said. "The Fleet Admiral has a new order. She needs eyes in the Flower Capital — real-time recording of what's happening. You are currently the best positioned asset for this." A pause. "The regular Marine will not be providing backup for this operation. I want to be clear about that before you make any decisions."

He gave them the space to discuss it. The order came with explicit acknowledgment of the risk and explicit authorization to refuse. If they left the capital and declined the mission, no court martial — the Fleet Admiral had made that clear. The cost was different: no further promotion path for any member of the team, and SWORD itself would likely be dissolved. A special force that declined its critical assignments had no institutional justification for the resources it consumed.

Grus looked at his team.

He wanted to stay. He wanted to find the right moment, in the mess of what was coming, to be near Sesshōmaru when something stronger than himself was also nearby. Revenge was not a formal part of Marine doctrine, but it was a real part of the calculation he was running.

"I'm staying," Todoroki Shoto said.

Helmeppo: "I want to see Orochi under Clairvoyance. Whether he's human or something else. I'm staying."

Kujaku looked at Hibari, then at the team, then at the direction of the capital they'd just left. "We stay. But we do what we can actually do. If we hit something we can't handle, we run. We came here together." She didn't finish the sentence. The rest of it was understood.

Grus called Aramaki back. "We're staying. Send us whatever support you can without officially landing Marines."

Aramaki had already been thinking about this. He couldn't put uniformed Marine forces on the island without it becoming an official incident — that door was closed. But there were people who had been removed from official Marine status, the same category of fiction that SWORD itself operated under, who could be moved without triggering that threshold. Loyal to the institution. Capable. Not currently appearing in any roster.

The person leading that additional element had a connection to the Mink Tribe — a young man Aramaki described as having been found in an underground black-market fighting circuit and recruited by the Fleet Admiral personally. His personality and appearance had made formal Marine enrollment impractical. He was a SWORD reserve member, technically, brought here partly to begin building familiarity with the team he might eventually operate alongside.

By the time this reinforcement arrived, whatever was left of the opposition inside the capital would have a different assessment of how many people it was dealing with.
