Chapter 124 - What the Hell Did Venom Do?

All kinds of signs indicated that the Venom suit would make Spider-Man more aggressive, amplify the darkness within him, and so on.

Thinking of this, a sudden flash of realization crossed Peter's mind.

He suddenly remembered—when he had been fighting those so-called Six Fiends earlier…

Back then, his heart had been ice-cold. He had even personally killed Chameleon without feeling the slightest ripple.

Though he reasoned with himself, telling himself that someone like Chameleon—who'd even plant bombs inside the densely populated LHG headquarters—deserved to die, when he thought about it carefully, neither he nor the '94 Spider-Man were the type to kill so casually.

To date, the most ruthless thing he had ever done was in universe Earth-90214, when he had merged with the Noir Spider-Man. He personally shot Vulture dead, then watched as Green Goblin and Kraven the Hunter were devoured bit by bit by those venomous spiders.

At that time, Noir Spider-Man had felt a sense of relief—vengeance fulfilled.

Because he had already discovered the truth behind Uncle Ben's death from Urich's notes: Green Goblin had ordered Kraven to capture Uncle Ben, then had Vulture tear him apart piece by piece… even eat him!

And everything Noir Spider-Man did afterward was simply repaying them tooth for tooth—returning every bit of agony Uncle Ben suffered back to Green Goblin and his minions.

So even though Noir Spider-Man was ruthless, his mind was unwavering. He always knew what he should—and should not—do.

Peter's second moment of ruthlessness happened in Earth-1610B, when dealing with Kingpin.

He broke Kingpin's limbs, leaving him completely crippled.

That was because that world's Spider-Man's identity had already been exposed, and Aunt May and Mary Jane—two people the blond Spider-Man cherished—were both under Kingpin's threat.

If Peter didn't completely eliminate Kingpin as a threat, it would very likely be Aunt May and Mary Jane who suffered in the end.

If that happened, he would never be able to face the blond Spider-Man again.

Aside from those moments, Peter had always controlled himself, acting only to the extent necessary.

But this time, he had actively killed Chameleon.

And he was certain that, at that moment, it was him who had been in control.

If he calculated the timing, when he was fighting the Six Fiends, it should've been roughly the same time this body here was being controlled by the Venom suit.

Could the Venom symbiote influence him across worlds?

No—no, that wasn't right!

Peter frowned deeply. Something about this felt off.

If Venom had such an incredible ability, then why would it need to hide the moment Peter's consciousness returned?

Just now, Peter had carefully searched every part of his body, yet found no trace of Venom.

That meant the Venom suit had actively detached from him and hidden itself the moment it sensed he was back.

Of course, there was another possibility: the symbiote might still be on him, and he simply hadn't noticed.

Because based on the experiences of Bully Maguire and the '94 Spider-Man—two people who had previously had close contact with symbiotes—the Venom symbiote seemed to possess the ability to evade Spider-Sense.

So even if Venom was currently hiding somewhere on his body—or somewhere in Betty's room—Peter still wouldn't be able to detect it.

But regardless of which case it was, one critical point became clear:

It didn't dare face him head-on.

It was afraid.

Why?

Peter felt that the Venom symbiote he had encountered was different from the ones the other two Spider-Men encountered.

Their symbiotes had lunged at them immediately.

But his had… hidden?

Could it be because it knew that he knew how dangerous it was, and wanted to subtly influence him, or even replace him?

"Did something happen, Peter?" Betty asked worriedly.

Peter shook his head lightly and smiled. "Betty, I'm heading out. I'll see you at school tomorrow."

"Mhm, mhm. Goodnight, my Spider-boyfriend~"Betty giggled, her smooth cheek rubbing against his before she let go.

Peter walked to the window, pressed the button on his wrist, and nano-particles burst from the watch, forming his nano-suit in moments.

He waved at Betty and leapt out the window.

Betty ran to the windowsill, watching in the direction Peter disappeared—only to realize that, in just the time it took to draw a breath, he was already gone.

Peter swung between the buildings of the city, but his thoughts were elsewhere.

From the information Betty had just revealed, another question bothered him.

During the time Venom controlled his body, it must have gone off to do something.

His whole body had been soaking wet—he probably went into water somewhere.

And there was another key detail.

When Peter was putting on his clothes earlier, he found several scorched spots.

Marks that looked like they had been burned by high heat.

They seemed exactly like the scorch marks caused by high-energy laser weapons burning through fabric!

Had the Venom suit controlled his body to fight someone with laser weapons?

Unfortunately, in this city, plenty of people had laser-based weapons, so Peter couldn't immediately guess who it was.

He decided to deal with the damn symbiote issue first.

Peter planned to follow Bully Maguire's method and find a large bell—use its sound to shake the symbiote loose and see if it was still on him.

But clearly, that plan was doomed to fail.

He remembered that Trinity Church on Wall Street had a 300-kilogram bell, a gift from London commemorating the 9/11 attacks.

But at this hour, who would be ringing it?

After wandering around the city for a while, Peter changed course toward Bleecker Street.

He decided to seek out Strange.

As the Sorcerer Supreme, Strange could surely help him locate a symbiote with ease.

Surely Strange wouldn't want his friend to be influenced by Venom and turn into a violent, ruthless monster, right?

Buzz—

Just as Peter crossed a street, his Spider-Sense suddenly flared.

He was mid-air at the moment—between releasing his previous web line and firing the next.

A powerful sense of danger surged up from within.

Without thinking, Peter twisted his body mid-air in an impossible angle.

Bang!

A sniper bullet struck the building beside him, shattering a chunk of brick!

It was a round fired from a large-caliber sniper rifle!

Using a mid-air "falling stone" maneuver, Peter let his body drop sharply. Still in mid-air, he fired a short web line, pulling himself sideways several feet.

Using both hands, he adjusted his direction repeatedly—within mere seconds, he shifted direction four or five times in the air.

Behind him, at least ten sniper bullets missed their mark!

What the hell had Venom done??
