I watched them for a while. Zoe's reaction was strange. It was written all over her face that whatever they were saying to her was affecting her deeply.
After that, as soon as Zoe returned Lara's phone and lifted her head, her eyes met mine. She looked at me silently, as if I had hurt her. Then she lowered her head again and walked straight toward the door.
I straightened my spine to have a word with her. Lara and Lady Vivian were watching. As soon as Zoe stepped inside, she stopped before I could even try to get her attention.
"Zoe, did you have breakfast?" I asked, trying to start a conversation just to see if she was really upset with me or if I was just imagining things.
She lowered her gaze and then lifted her head. Her head tilted toward me.
"What difference does it make whether I had breakfast or not?" she replied. "These days, you care more about someone else than me."
Saying that, Zoe brushed past me and went upstairs.
