Warhorses neighed, hooves raising clouds of dust, as Lord Green led his Clan Soldiers on horseback toward the spearmen's encampment.
Before the camp gate, a dozen or so law enforcement soldiers wearing white-feathered pointed helmets and the soldiers led by Baron Dreal Keifer were subtly facing off.
Whoosh! A gleaming spear, whistling through the air, suddenly flew into the open ground between the two sides. The spear plunged deep into the earth, its head completely buried, leaving only the trembling shaft exposed.
The ground was shaken by the spear, raising dust, and the surroundings immediately fell silent.
Clip-clop, clip-clop, Lord Green's warhorse paced forward, and his standard-bearer loudly proclaimed, "Welcome, Lord Green!"
After a pause, the soldiers gathered before the camp gate all knelt in Lord Green's direction, with only Baron Dreal Keifer a few beats behind.
Clip-clop~ clip-clop~ Muddy hooves appeared in Baron Dreal's line of sight, and Lord Green's voice rang out from above: "Dreal Keifer, resisting klaebber law is an act of treason."
"Treason?!" Baron Dreal was startled at first, then abruptly stood up, looking up at Lord Green on horseback, and said, "Lord Green, Costa and his men fought bravely in the Valley; they are warriors of the Crab Claw Peninsula, and the Valley people are spoils of war. They are not entitled to the protection of klaebber law! I am not committing treason; I am seeking justice!"
Lord Green's brown eyes flickered slightly as he said, "It seems you are well aware that those you intend to protect have violated klaebber law."
Baron Dreal opened his mouth and said, "They have military merits!"
"Military merits are military merits, but law is law."
Lord Green looked down at Baron Dreal and said, "If not for Kleber, could the small Keifer have appeared on the battlefield in the Valley?"
Baron Dreal glared: "The Keifer has existed for several hundred years longer than the Kleber. When the Keifer ancestors were hunting on the Crab Claw Peninsula, there was no… there was no…"
By the end, his voice trailed off, as if regretting his momentary impulsiveness.
"No what?"
Without waiting for Baron Dreal's reply, Lord Green continued, "Is that the source of your courage to challenge klaebber law? What a ridiculous reason."
Lord Green's gaze swept over the kneeling crowd as he declared, "I am your lord, and klaebber law is my command."
His horse paced beneath him as he continued, "So, you do what I tell you to do. Have you forgotten the consequences of defying your lord's decree?"
"Virgil, court official, record this."
Lord Green announced: "The Keifer's defiance of klaebber law is an act of rebellion. I, Greene Kleber, in the name of the Earl of Crab Claw Peninsula and Protector of the Crab Claw Peninsula, hereby relieve the rebel Dreal Keifer of his command of the military regiment and strip the Keifer of their title, castle, and lands. Their clansmen shall be dealt with as traitors."
Baron Dreal said in a panic, "You, you can't do this!"
