Chapter 657 - The Weight of Responsibility

That day did not end when the sun began to set. On the contrary, that was when I understood the true size of what I had taken on. The village was not a simple problem, nor was it something that could be solved with strength or a quick decision. It was an entire disorganized system, functioning at the limit of what was acceptable.

I spent the rest of the afternoon walking through the village alongside the village master, analyzing every detail more carefully. The plantations were spread out irregularly, some areas more productive than others without any clear explanation, and the distribution of work did not follow an efficient pattern. Each family took care of its own space, but without any overall coordination.

Lyannis was already bothered.

"This place is completely misaligned," she said, observing the fields. "They work… but they don't work together."

"I noticed," I replied.

"If they keep going like this, they'll never grow."

"I know."

Scarlett crossed her arms, looking around.

"I've seen worse places… but I've also seen better places with half of what this place has."

Elara crouched down, touching the soil with the tips of her fingers.

"The land is not weak. On the contrary. It has potential."

Liriel nodded.

"But something is interfering. It's not constant… but it's there."

Vespera remained silent, but her eyes followed every movement around us.

Rai'kanna approached me.

"So?"

I took a deep breath before answering.

"It's not just one problem. It's several."

She nodded.

"And you're going to solve all of them."

"I'll have to."

There was no longer any doubt about it. The king had not sent anyone to help me. There was no advisor, no direct support. This was a clear test.

And I had accepted it.

We stopped near an area where some workers were arguing among themselves. It was not a fight, but there was clearly a conflict of decisions. One wanted to plant in a certain area, another said it was not the right time.

I looked at the village master.

"Does this happen often?"

He sighed.

"More than it should."

"Who decides?"

He remained silent for a moment.

"Each person decides for themselves."

That was the core of the problem.

"Then no one truly decides," I said.

He did not answer, but his expression confirmed it.

I kept walking, absorbing everything. There was no point in acting without fully understanding the situation. If I made decisions too quickly, I could end up creating more problems than solutions.

But one thing was already clear.

If I did not take complete control, nothing would change.

We stopped again in the center of the village. The movement continued, but now I saw everything differently. They were not just people working. They were disconnected efforts.

I looked at everyone.

"Gather everyone."

The village master looked at me.

"Everyone?"

"Yes. Everyone."

He hesitated for a second, but then nodded and began giving orders. It did not take long for the villagers to start gathering. Some curious, others suspicious.

I remained silent while observing them.

When everyone was there, I stepped forward.

"I am the new person responsible for these lands."

Some exchanged glances. Others simply remained silent.

"I am not here to complicate your lives. I am here to organize."

An older man spoke.

"And why should we believe that?"

I looked directly at him.

"Because the way things are now… you're not going anywhere."

Silence.

I continued.

"You work. That is obvious. But you do not grow. And you know it."

No one answered.

"This is not a lack of effort. It is a lack of direction."

Lyannis watched carefully.

Scarlett seemed interested in their reaction.

Liriel maintained a calm expression.

Elara analyzed the environment.

Vespera remained silent.

Rai'kanna stood by my side.

I took a deep breath.

"From now on, that changes."

Some murmured.

"First, no one will make decisions alone regarding planting and harvesting."

The village master looked at me, surprised.

"Second, all incoming and outgoing resources will be recorded."

Lyannis gave a slight smile.

"Third, we are going to solve the problem with the land."

At that moment, I looked at Liriel.

She stepped forward.

"There is an external influence here. Something is affecting the quality of production. I will deal with it."

The villagers began exchanging glances.

"You will see results," I finished.

The older man crossed his arms.

"And if we don't?"

I answered without hesitation.

"Then you can question all of this."

He remained silent.

"But until then… follow what is said."

The village master took a deep breath.

"I will help."

I looked at him.

"No. You will lead this with me."

He seemed surprised.

"Me?"

"Yes. You know this place better than anyone. I'm only organizing it."

He nodded slowly.

The meeting ended shortly afterward, and the people began dispersing. There were still doubts, that was clear. But there was also something new there.

Direction.

When it was only us again, Scarlett spoke.

"You completely took over."

"There was no other option."

Lyannis crossed her arms.

"Now there's no turning back."

"I know."

Elara looked at me.

"You cannot fail here."

"I won't."

Liriel approached.

"I'll begin the purification early tomorrow morning."

"Perfect."

Vespera finally spoke.

"So the game has begun."

I nodded.

Rai'kanna stared at me for a few seconds.

"Now you're alone in this."

I looked at her.

"No. I have all of you."

She gave a slight smile.

We returned to the mansion with the sky already darkening. My body was tired, but my mind was more active than ever. I already knew what I needed to do.

It was not about strength.

It was not about combat.

It was about control.

And this time… I had no margin for error.

Before sleeping, I stopped for a moment and looked out the window toward the distant village.

That was not just another territory.

It was a test.

And I was going to pass it.
