Chapter 670 - Gratitude

The silence that came after the second confrontation was not the same as before. There was no compressed tension or immediate expectation of another attack. The field ahead was clear, the pressure had disappeared, and for the first time since we arrived, the village truly seemed safe.

I completely deactivated the sword's flow. My body was still responding well, but the strain was clear. It was not exhaustion, but accumulated consumption. I took a deep breath and slowly let the air out.

Rai'kanna stopped beside me.

"Now this really is over for today."

"For today," I repeated.

Scarlett ran a hand through her hair while looking at the field.

"They came with more strength… and fell even faster."

"Because they had no choice," Elara replied, still carefully observing the surroundings.

Liriel took a few steps forward, raising her hand.

"I'll purify the area again."

"Do it," I said.

The light spread from her, softer this time, but just as effective. The remnants of demonic energy gradually disappeared, as if they had never been there at all.

Lyannis observed everything carefully.

"The village's structure held up better than I expected."

"Because they held the line before we arrived," I replied.

Vespera appeared beside us again.

"There's no more movement nearby."

"You're sure?" Rai'kanna asked.

"Yes."

I nodded.

"Then it's settled."

We turned toward the village. The villagers were now coming out without hesitation. Some still carried light injuries, while others helped organize what had been damaged. But there was something different in their eyes.

It was not fear.

It was relief.

The village chief approached us again, this time without rushing, but with firm steps. He stopped a few meters away and slightly lowered his head.

"Sir… we have no words."

I looked directly at him.

"You did the hardest part. You held the line until we arrived."

He took a deep breath.

"Even so… if it weren't for all of you…"

Rai'kanna crossed her arms.

"Then don't think about it."

Scarlett gave a faint smile.

"You're still here. That's what matters."

The chief nodded, visibly emotional.

"We'll rebuild. And we'll do it better."

Lyannis stepped closer.

"If you organize properly, the next defense will be even more efficient."

Elara added,

"And we can help with that."

The man looked at us with clear gratitude.

"It would be an honor."

Liriel finished the purification and returned.

"The area is clean."

"Good," I replied.

I walked slowly through the village. I observed the damage, the structures, the points that had collapsed more easily. This was not just a victory.

It was learning.

"We need to reinforce this area," I said, pointing to one of the most affected sections.

Lyannis immediately recorded it.

"And here too," she added.

Rai'kanna analyzed the terrain.

"They came straight through the most open path."

"Then we close it," I replied.

Scarlett looked around.

"Better barricades, maybe."

"Yes."

Elara thought for a moment.

"I can leave fixed magical structures at certain points."

"That helps."

Vespera remained silent as she observed, but spoke shortly after.

"And scouts farther out."

"Good idea."

The village chief was mentally noting everything.

"We'll start immediately."

I stopped for a moment in the center of the village. The villagers were beginning to gather there, not out of fear, but because they needed to reorganize. Some looked at us, while others simply continued working.

"You've fully taken charge now," Rai'kanna said.

"There's no choice," I replied.

"There is," she said. "But you chose this."

I looked at her for a moment.

"Yes."

Scarlett approached.

"And you're doing it right."

"I'm doing what's necessary."

Liriel smiled faintly.

"And that's already a lot."

Lyannis closed the records.

"If this continues, this village will become one of the most stable in the region."

Elara nodded.

"And safe."

Vespera completed,

"And prepared."

I took a deep breath.

"That's the goal."

The village chief returned once more, now accompanied by several villagers.

"Sir… we want to formally thank you."

I lightly shook my head.

"There's no need for that."

"There is," he replied. "You protected our lives."

I looked at everyone there.

"Then stay alive. That's enough for me."

There was a brief silence, followed by a few discreet smiles. It was not a grand response, but it was enough.

The sun was slowly beginning to set, and with it came a different feeling. The day had been long, heavy, but resolved.

"Let's head back to the mansion," I said.

Rai'kanna nodded.

"We need to rest."

Scarlett agreed.

"Today was more intense than it seemed."

Liriel took a deep breath.

"But it worked out."

Elara kept her attentive gaze.

"For now."

Lyannis was already organizing the next steps.

"We have adjustments to make tomorrow."

Vespera simply walked beside me.

We left the village with calmer steps. There was no more urgency at that moment. The path back to the mansion was silent, but not heavy. It was the silence of conclusion.

When we arrived, the environment was intact. The servants were already prepared, and everything seemed in order. I went up to the room without delay.

My body finally began to feel the true weight of the day. I sat down for a moment before lying down.

The girls entered little by little, occupying the space as always. There was no need for words at that moment.

I closed my eyes for a moment.

The day was over.

The village was safe.

But deep down… I knew.

This still was not the end.

It was only the beginning of something greater.
