Chapter 934 - The Return to the Kingdom

The transition through the immense magical barrier protecting the underwater capital caused a slight tingling sensation on my skin. As soon as we crossed the city's threshold, Liriel's portable dome naturally dissipated, integrating us into the controlled environment where the water flowed with a different kind of lightness, allowing breathing and speech to take place without the aid of constant spells.

The movement along the avenues paved with mother-of-pearl blocks came to a halt for a few moments. The local residents, with their shining scales and garments woven from fine algae, respectfully made way and gave restrained smiles when they recognized me. To my left, Rai'kanna maintained an imposing posture, but her golden eyes curiously observed the small details of the routine of the marine citizens returning to their work.

It wasn't long before an honor guard, mounted on large marine creatures with gleaming shells, approached to escort us directly to the royal palace. Scarlett walked right behind me, her firm footsteps echoing against the polished stone, keeping her attention focused on the guards' posture to assess the kingdom's level of military readiness.

"Their security seems efficient, but the calm here can be deceptive," Vespera commented in a low tone, positioning herself to my right so that she could cover any blind spot as we advanced through the immense carved coral doors of the palace.

The throne room was a masterpiece of underwater engineering, with columns that imitated petrified sea trees and a ceiling open to the deep ocean, blocked only by the film of golden energy. In the center, the King and Queen of the Fish-Men were already waiting for us, standing and demonstrating a hospitality that went beyond the usual diplomatic protocols.

"Welcome back, Lord Takumi," the King said, his voice resonating with a deep echo that seemed to vibrate through the water itself. "Your arrival in our kingdom brings a much-needed relief in these uncertain times."

The Queen stepped forward, offering a graceful nod to my group.

"The presence of your companions graces our palace. We hope that the journey through the currents was peaceful."

I formally thanked them, giving a brief bow before addressing the main subject. Elara, strategically positioned at my side with her reports protected by magic, took a small step forward, ready to provide any economic or logistical data the discussion might require.

"Thank you for the welcome, Your Majesty," I replied, maintaining a firm and direct tone. "The journey here was peaceful, but the reports from the surface do not allow us to relax. We came to discuss the current situation of the war and understand how the Demon King's army has been moving near the maritime borders."

The King sighed, crossing his muscular arms covered in ancient markings.

"The seas, for now, remain calm. Our deep-trench scouts have not detected any unusual movement or corrupted energy near the capital. The enemy appears to be entirely focused on the continental territories."

Liriel tilted her head slightly, thoughtful, crossing her fingers over the handle of her staff.

"That makes sense from a strategic point of view. The demonic army would need a massive magical effort to move large contingents under the pressure of the ocean. They prefer to wear down the surface first."

"Exactly," I agreed, taking the floor again. "And that is precisely why I am here. I did not come merely for a diplomatic visit, but to directly manage the lands that were granted to me in this kingdom. I want to understand the local production, organize the resources, and ensure that this region functions as a solid supply base and a safe refuge in case the war on the surface gets out of control."

Lyannis smiled, elegantly adjusting a strand of hair and glancing sideways at the royal advisers observing the meeting.

"Leaving the lands idle while the world burns would be an unforgivable waste. My lord has grand plans for this place's agricultural potential."

The King of the Fish-Men seemed genuinely impressed by my determination and practical focus. He looked at the Queen, who nodded with a silent smile of approval, demonstrating that the attitude of a leader who gets his hands dirty was exactly what the people needed to see.

"Your conduct as a ruler honors me, Takumi," the monarch declared, a spark of enthusiasm in his eyes. "Managing underwater holdings requires an understanding that most surface dwellers do not possess. Given the importance of your mission and the respect I have for your dedication, I have decided that I will personally accompany you to your lands tomorrow to introduce you to the local leaders."

I accepted the offer with a respectful nod, knowing that the presence of the King himself would legitimize my orders before the underwater workers. With the plan established and the political alliance properly strengthened, the group prepared to conclude that first audience, ready to begin the real fieldwork in the depths.
