Chapter 3 - CHAPTER 3: TWO WORLDS COLLIDE

One afternoon, Jimmy called Fiona with a different tone in his voice.

"Fiona," he said, "I want you to come somewhere with me tonight."

Fiona paused slightly. "Where?"

"My home," he replied.

The words made her heart beat a little faster. Meeting his home meant meeting a part of his real life — something she had not yet fully seen.

Fiona hesitated. She had never been in such a situation before. Meeting a boyfriend's family was not something she took lightly.

"I don't know…" she said softly.

Jimmy reassured her quickly.

"Don't worry. It's just dinner. My mother wants to meet you."

That sentence made everything feel more serious.

"My mother?" Fiona repeated.

"Yes," Jimmy said. "I've told her about you. She wants to meet the girl I care about."

Fiona stayed silent for a moment. Her heart was unsure, but her feelings for Jimmy pushed her forward.

"Alright," she finally said.

And just like that, her life took a step into a new world.

That evening, Jimmy came to pick Fiona up.

She wore simple but neat clothing. She did not want to appear flashy or uncomfortable. Fiona believed in being natural.

When they arrived at Jimmy's home, Fiona noticed immediately that it was different from hers.

The house was large, well-designed, and surrounded by beautiful lighting. Everything looked organized, clean, and expensive. It was the kind of place she had only seen in pictures before.

Fiona felt a small wave of nervousness.

Jimmy noticed her silence.

"Relax," he said gently. "It's just home."

But Fiona's heart was already beating differently. She was stepping into a world that felt unfamiliar.

Inside the house, Jimmy's mother was already waiting.

Her name was Ella.

Ella was a woman who carried herself with authority. She was elegant, confident, and clearly used to a certain lifestyle. Her expression was calm, but her eyes were sharp — the kind that observed everything carefully before making judgment.

When Fiona entered the room, Ella looked at her from head to toe.

There was a brief silence.

"Good evening, ma'am," Fiona said respectfully, slightly bowing her head.

Ella responded with a small nod, but her expression did not soften.

"So," Ella said slowly, "this is the girl you've been talking about."

Jimmy smiled. "Yes, mother. This is Fiona."

Fiona stood quietly, her hands slightly clasped together. She could already feel something in the atmosphere — something unspoken.

Dinner was served shortly after.

During dinner, Jimmy tried to keep the atmosphere light. He talked about small things, laughing occasionally, trying to make Fiona feel comfortable.

But Ella remained mostly silent.

She observed Fiona more than she spoke to her.

Fiona, on her part, remained polite and respectful. She answered questions briefly when asked and tried not to appear nervous.

But deep inside, she could feel it — Ella was not fully accepting her.

After a while, Ella finally spoke directly.

"So, Fiona… what do your parents do?"

The question sounded simple, but it carried weight.

Fiona paused for a moment before replying.

"My mother takes care of the home," she said softly. "We live simply."

Ella nodded slowly, but her eyes showed something different — a silent judgment.

"I see," she replied.

The conversation did not continue warmly after that.

Instead, silence filled the table again.

Jimmy noticed the change in mood, but he tried to ignore it.

Fiona, however, felt it deeply.

She suddenly became aware of the difference between her world and Jimmy's world.

And for the first time, she felt like she did not fully belong.

After dinner, Jimmy took Fiona aside.

They walked into a quieter part of the house.

"How do you feel?" he asked.

Fiona gave a small smile.

"It was… nice," she said, though her voice was not fully confident.

Jimmy looked at her carefully.

"My mother can be strict," he said. "Don't take it personally."

Fiona nodded slightly.

But deep inside, she already knew that Ella's reaction was not just strictness — it was something deeper.

After Fiona was taken outside for a short walk by Jimmy, Ella remained inside the house.

She sat quietly for a moment before speaking her thoughts.

"Is this really the girl you want to marry?" she asked.

Jimmy turned to her.

"Yes," he said without hesitation.

Ella sighed softly.

"She is a nice girl," she said slowly, "but she is not from our world."

Jimmy frowned slightly. "What do you mean?"

Ella's tone became firmer.

"She is from a poor background. You need someone who understands your lifestyle, your responsibilities."

Jimmy remained silent for a moment.

But then he replied.

"I don't care about that. I care about her."

Ella looked at him carefully.

"Love is not always enough," she said.

But Jimmy did not respond.

Later that night, Jimmy drove Fiona back home.

The road was quiet. The lights from the street passed slowly across their faces.

Fiona looked out the window silently.

Jimmy noticed her mood.

"Are you thinking about my mother?" he asked.

Fiona hesitated before answering.

"She… seems very serious," she said carefully.

Jimmy sighed.

"She just needs time," he replied.

Then after a short silence, he added something that made Fiona look at him.

"Don't worry too much about her," he said softly. "Just focus on us."

Fiona looked at him.

"Focus on us?" she repeated.

Jimmy nodded.

"Yes. What matters is you and me. Not anyone else's opinion."

Fiona did not answer immediately.

Something about his words stayed in her mind.

Was it reassurance… or avoidance?

She could not tell.

When Fiona finally reached home that night, she said goodbye to Jimmy quietly and walked inside.

Fina noticed her silence immediately.

"How was it?" she asked.

Fiona paused for a moment before answering.

"It was… different," she said softly.

Fina looked at her carefully but did not press further.

Fiona went to her room later that night, unable to sleep easily.

She kept thinking about Ella's eyes.

About the silence at the dinner table.

About the difference she felt but could not explain.

And about Jimmy's final words:

"Don't worry too much about her."

As she lay in bed, Fiona stared at the ceiling quietly.

For the first time, a small doubt began to form in her heart.

Not loud.

Not clear.

Just a whisper.

But sometimes, whispers are enough to change everything.

And far away, in another room, Jimmy also lay awake — thinking about Fiona… and the world that stood between them.
