Chapter 1 - 1 The maid who came for revenge

Chapter 1

The large black taxi slowly stopped in front of the Cole mansion.

Elena stared silently through the window for several long seconds, her fingers tightening around the small handbag resting on her lap.

The mansion looked even bigger in person.

Tall black iron gates stood proudly around the enormous property while golden lights glowed warmly from the expensive windows. The long driveway alone looked larger than the entire apartment building where Elena and her mother once lived.

Everything about the place screamed wealth.

Power.

Control.

The kind of power capable of destroying ordinary people without consequence.

Her chest tightened painfully.

For a brief moment, old memories flashed through her mind.

Her mother sitting alone in the dark.

Unpaid hospital bills scattered across the table.

The endless crying.

The sleepless nights.

And the woman connected to all of it.

Vanessa Cole.

Elena slowly swallowed the bitterness rising inside her chest before taking a deep breath.

Tonight was not about emotions.

It was about revenge.

Carefully planned revenge.

She paid the driver quietly before stepping out of the taxi.

Cold evening air brushed against her skin immediately.

Elena lifted her gaze toward the mansion again.

This was the place she had dreamed about entering for years.

Not because she admired it.

But because she hated it.

She adjusted the simple maid uniform she wore before walking toward the entrance gate.

The closer she got, the tighter her chest became.

One of the security guards stopped her briefly.

"You're the new maid?" he asked.

Elena nodded politely.

"Yes."

After checking her name, the guard stepped aside.

"Head inside. Mrs. Martha will explain your duties."

Elena thanked him softly before walking further into the mansion grounds.

Beautiful flowers lined both sides of the pathway leading toward the main house. A massive fountain stood proudly at the center of the compound while soft lights reflected against the clear water.

Everything looked perfect.

Too perfect.

Yet somehow, the mansion felt cold.

Like a beautiful prison hiding ugly secrets behind expensive walls.

The moment Elena stepped inside, warmth surrounded her immediately.

The interior was breathtaking.

Crystal chandeliers glowed brightly overhead.

Polished marble floors reflected the golden lights beautifully.

Elegant paintings decorated the walls while expensive furniture filled every corner of the massive space.

Elena had never seen such luxury before.

But instead of admiration, anger quietly settled deeper inside her chest.

Because while people inside this mansion lived surrounded by wealth, her mother suffered endlessly.

"Who are you?"

Elena quickly turned at the sharp voice.

A middle-aged woman stood nearby wearing formal black clothing. Her posture remained straight and professional, while her eyes carefully studied Elena from head to toe.

"I-I'm Elena," she replied politely. "The new maid."

The woman nodded once.

"I'm Martha. Follow me."

Elena quietly followed behind her while observing the mansion silently.

Servants moved around carefully and quietly.

Nobody laughed loudly.

Nobody spoke unnecessarily.

Despite the beauty surrounding them, the atmosphere inside the mansion felt tense.

Strict.

Controlled.

As they walked upstairs, Martha suddenly spoke.

"One important thing," she said seriously. "Avoid causing problems for Madam Vanessa."

Elena remained silent.

Martha continued carefully, "And never interfere when Mr. and Mrs. Cole argue."

Elena lowered her eyes slightly.

"I understand."

But inwardly, something cold settled inside her chest.

So even the workers already knew the marriage inside this mansion was broken.

Interesting.

Very interesting.

Hours later, Elena stood quietly inside the massive dining hall while helping the other servants prepare dinner.

The chandelier above the dining table glowed softly, casting golden light across the luxurious room. Expensive silverware reflected beautifully against the polished marble surface while soft classical music played quietly in the background.

The atmosphere looked elegant.

But tension filled the air heavily.

Elena carefully placed another dish onto the table before stepping back beside the other workers.

That was when Vanessa finally entered the dining hall.

Elena's eyes lifted immediately.

Vanessa Cole was beautiful.

Very beautiful.

She wore a fitted dark red dress that perfectly hugged her figure while expensive jewelry sparkled around her neck and wrist. Her makeup looked flawless, and confidence followed every step she took.

Everything about her screamed elegance and pride.

Yet the moment Vanessa sat down, the coldness surrounding her became obvious.

She picked up her wine glass elegantly before taking a small sip.

"You're late again," she said coldly without even looking up properly.

Elena instinctively turned toward the entrance.

A tall man walked calmly into the dining hall.

Adrian Cole.

For a brief second, Elena froze slightly.

The rumors truly did not exaggerate his appearance.

He looked calm, cold, and intimidating without even trying.

His dark suit fit him perfectly, and his sharp features carried the kind of authority capable of making people nervous instantly.

Adrian removed his suit jacket calmly before taking his seat.

"I was working," he replied simply as he unfolded his napkin.

Vanessa scoffed lightly.

"You're always working."

Nobody spoke after that.

The servants quietly continued serving dinner carefully, avoiding eye contact completely.

Even the sound of footsteps became softer.

Vanessa leaned back lazily in her chair with visible annoyance.

"Do you even know we have the Harrison gala this weekend?" she asked sharply. "Or are you planning to embarrass me again by showing up late?"

Adrian finally looked at her.

His expression remained unreadable.

"I already said I'll attend."

"Yes," Vanessa replied bitterly, "after forcing me to remind you three times."

Adrian said nothing afterward.

The silence between them felt uncomfortable.

Cold.

Distant.

Like two strangers forced to live inside the same mansion instead of husband and wife.

Elena quietly observed everything while pretending to focus on her duties.

This marriage was worse than she imagined.

Vanessa suddenly placed her fork down with irritation.

"And I need a new car."

The workers immediately lowered their heads further.

Vanessa continued casually, "The white one is already becoming outdated."

Adrian continued eating calmly.

"You bought it four months ago."

"And?" Vanessa replied without shame. "People move on quickly these days. I can't keep driving the same thing everywhere."

Her tone carried complete arrogance.

Adrian looked entirely uninterested in the conversation.

"I'll have my assistant handle it."

Vanessa's lips curved slightly with satisfaction.

"Good."

Elena quietly tightened her fingers around the tray she held.

Not once since dinner started had Vanessa asked Adrian how his day went.

Not once had she asked whether he was tired.

Or whether he had eaten earlier.

Everything revolved around herself.

Her appearance.

Her parties.

Her image.

Meanwhile Adrian simply sat there silently, almost as though he no longer expected care from anyone anymore.

For a brief second, Elena found herself studying him carefully.

She expected Adrian Cole to be arrogant and cruel like the rumors described.

But instead…

he simply looked exhausted.

A deep exhaustion hidden carefully beneath his calm expression.

The kind that came from carrying everything alone for too long.

Suddenly Vanessa frowned after cutting into her steak again.

"This steak is too dry."

One of the younger maids instantly panicked.

"I-I'm sorry, Madam—"

Vanessa pushed the plate away carelessly.

"Do your jobs properly. Is that too difficult?"

The young maid's face immediately turned pale.

Before Vanessa could continue, Adrian finally spoke.

"That's enough."

The entire dining hall fell silent instantly.

Vanessa slowly turned toward him in disbelief.

"Excuse me?"

"She apologized already," Adrian said calmly. "There's no need to humiliate her over food."

Vanessa laughed dryly.

"So now you care about servants?"

"I care about unnecessary noise during dinner."

His tone remained calm, but the tension between them sharpened immediately.

Vanessa's face hardened slightly.

"You always do this," she muttered bitterly.

Adrian ignored her completely and continued eating.

The silence afterward became painfully uncomfortable.

Elena lowered her gaze quietly, but inwardly, surprise flickered inside her chest.

She expected Adrian Cole to be exactly like the rumors.

Cold.

Heartless.

Cruel.

But instead…

he looked like a man emotionally drained by the life surrounding him.

And somehow, that felt far more dangerous.

Because broken people were unpredictable.

Vanessa suddenly pushed her chair back loudly before standing.

"I'm no longer hungry."

Without another word, she grabbed her phone and walked away angrily, her heels clicking sharply against the marble floor.

The moment she disappeared upstairs, the servants quietly released the breaths they had been holding.

The young maid beside Elena looked close to tears.

"It's okay," Elena whispered softly.

The girl nodded gratefully.

Adrian remained seated alone at the table for several quiet seconds.

For the first time, Elena noticed how lonely he looked inside such a massive mansion.

A man surrounded by wealth, power, and luxury…

yet completely alone.

Adrian finally stood from his seat.

The servants immediately straightened nervously.

But he simply adjusted his sleeves before speaking calmly.

"Everyone can rest early tonight."

His voice remained deep and emotionless, yet somehow gentler than expected.

"Yes, sir," the workers replied quietly.

As Adrian walked past Elena, she instinctively lowered her gaze respectfully.

But just before he passed her completely, he paused briefly.

"You're new here," he said calmly.

Elena looked up slightly, surprised he even noticed her.

"Yes, sir."

His eyes rested on her face for one silent moment before looking away again.

"Don't let Vanessa trouble you too much."

Then he walked away without another word.

Elena stood frozen beside the dining table.

Her heart tightened strangely inside her chest.

Because for the first time since entering this mansion, Adrian Cole no longer felt like the villain everyone described.

Instead…

he looked like a man trapped inside a life he no longer wanted.

And Elena suddenly realized something dangerous.

The more she understood him…

the harder revenge might become.
