Chapter 37 - On the scoreboard

In the 83rd minute, the fourth official appeared beside the halfway line with the electronic board once again.

Fresh legs were coming.

Botafogo made two substitutions.

One exhausted midfielder slowly walked off to a respectful round of applause from the travelling supporters.

At the same time, another attacking player replaced a tiring forward, giving the visitors fresh energy for the closing minutes.

Moments later, Palmeiras also turned to their bench.

Abel Ferreira made another change, replacing a fatigued midfielder with a more attack-minded player.

The applause from the home crowd acknowledged the effort of the departing player, whose shirt was soaked with sweat after covering almost every blade of grass.

The pace increased again almost immediately.

Fresh players meant fresh pressing.

Fresh running.

Fresh determination.

In the 85th minute, the television broadcast briefly cut away from the action.

A graphic appeared across the giant screens inside Allianz Parque.

OFFICIAL ATTENDANCE

41,982

The announcement was met with a tremendous roar.

Thousands of supporters lifted their scarves once more.

The noise rolled around the stadium like thunder.

The players barely noticed.

They remained locked in the contest.

Botafogo earned possession again and patiently built from the back.

John Victor rolled the ball short to Alexander Barboza.

Barboza passed across to Jair.

Jair found Marlon Freitas in midfield.

Palmeiras immediately pressed with Gabriel Silver leading the charge.

Gabriel sprinted toward the ball, forcing Marlon Freitas to release it earlier than planned.

The pass lacked accuracy.

Richard Ríos intercepted.

The crowd exploded.

"Vamos!"

Ríos surged forward before slipping the ball into Mauricio.

Mauricio instantly released Gabriel down the right.

Gabriel accelerated.

He reached the edge of the penalty area before cutting inside onto his stronger foot.

Three Botafogo defenders quickly surrounded him.

Seeing no clear route to goal, Gabriel calmly laid the ball back to Marcos Rocha.

Rocha delivered a dangerous cross toward López.

John Victor judged it perfectly.

The goalkeeper rose confidently and claimed the ball above everyone else before collapsing onto it to relieve the pressure.

Seconds later, Botafogo launched a quick counterattack.

Artur burst down the right flank.

Piquerez matched him stride for stride.

Artur attempted to cut inside.

Piquerez timed his tackle superbly, poking the ball away and conceding only a throw-in.

The visitors restarted quickly.

The ball was worked into the penalty area.

Igor Jesus rose highest.

His header drifted narrowly over Weverton's crossbar.

Several Botafogo players placed their hands on their heads.

It had been one of the clearest opportunities of the night.

The stadium let out a collective breath.

Weverton quickly organized his defence before restarting play.

The clock continued to move relentlessly.

88 minutes.

Still nothing separated the two teams.

Every challenge was celebrated like a goal.

Every interception earned applause.

Every clearance brought sighs of relief.

Abel Ferreira continued urging his players forward, while the Botafogo coaching staff demanded concentration until the final whistle.

Neither side wanted to settle for a draw.

Both believed one moment may decide everything.

As the stadium clock ticked into the 90th minute, the scoreboard still read:

Palmeiras 0–0 Botafogo.

Ninety minutes had been played.

Still no breakthrough.

The entire stadium turned its attention toward the fourth official, waiting to discover how much time remained.

As everyone's attention shifted to the fourth official, all eyes fixed on the electronic board to see how many minutes would be added, Gabriel received the ball just inside the center circle.

He took a few quick strides forward before lifting his head.

John Victor was a few yards off his line.

Gabriel spotted the opportunity.

Without hesitation, he struck the ball from long range, trying to catch the goalkeeper before he could retreat. The effort dipped perfectly, forcing John Victor to scramble backward. He stretched every inch of his body…

Clang!

The ball crashed against the crossbar for the second time before bouncing away.

"What a strike from Gabriel!" the commentator shouted.

Around Allianz Parque, thousands of supporters grabbed their heads in disbelief.

Abel Ferreira threw both hands into the air before bending over in frustration.

On the opposite touchline, Renato Paiva covered his mouth. For a split second, he had been convinced the ball was going in.

The fourth official then raised the electronic board.

Five minutes of added time.

The stadium erupted.

The Palmeiras supporters began singing even louder, refusing to believe the chance had passed. Green and white flags waved across every stand as scarves were lifted into the night sky.

Abel sprinted along the touchline, shouting at his players.

"Press! Press! Don't stop!"

Palmeiras pushed everyone forward.

Botafogo tried to escape the pressure.

John Victor rolled the ball short before it was worked forward to Igor Jesus. López immediately closed him down, forcing a hurried pass. Isolated and with no support around him, Jesus attempted to hold possession, but Gustavo Gómez stepped in with perfect timing, winning the ball back for Palmeiras.

The home crowd roared.

Palmeiras attacked again.

Maurício slipped the ball into Flaco López inside the box. The striker turned quickly and fired toward the near post.

John Victor reacted brilliantly, stretching low to push the shot behind for a corner.

Corner to Palmeiras.

Gabriel sprinted across to take it.

Without wasting a second, he whipped a dangerous delivery into the penalty area.

Botafogo's defenders rose first and headed the ball clear, but only as far as the edge of the box.

Gabriel had never stopped his run.

The ball dropped invitingly in front of him.

He steadied himself with one touch, opened his body, and struck through the ball with the inside of his right foot.

Time seemed to slow.

The shot curled beautifully beyond a forest of legs and bent toward the far post.

John Victor launched himself across goal…

…but this time he could only watch.

The ball kissed the inside of the post before nestling into the back of the net.

GOAL! GOAL! GOAL!

Gabriel Silver!

90+5.

"The teenager has done it!" the commentator screamed over the deafening noise.

"Gabriel Silver unforgettably announces himself!

He hit the crossbar twice tonight, but he makes absolutely no mistake this time! What a dramatic winner!"

Allianz Parque exploded.

Gabriel sprinted toward the stands, dropped to his knees, and kissed the Palmeiras badge on his chest before pointing toward the pitch.

"This is my home."

Gustavo Gómez was the first to reach him, wrapping him in a huge embrace before playfully thumping him on the back.

Within seconds, every Palmeiras player surrounded the young midfielder.

On the other side, several Botafogo players collapsed to the turf, their hearts broken after defending so bravely for more than ninety minutes.

"What a cruel ending for Botafogo," the co-commentator said. "One moment can decide an entire football match."

Abel Ferreira punched the air before embracing every member of his coaching staff.

The bench emptied onto the touchline.

Everywhere inside Allianz Parque was a sea of green and white.

In the stands, Gabriel's mother burst into tears as she hugged Lucas tightly, unable to take her eyes off the giant screen replaying her son's first goal for Palmeiras.

After the celebrations, Botafogo restarted the match.

The scoreboard now read:

PALMEIRAS 1–0 BOTAFOGO

Goalscorer: Gabriel Silver (90+5).

The visitors kicked off and immediately played the ball back to John Victor.

The goalkeeper launched a long pass into Palmeiras' half.

Igor Jesus jumped to flick it on but couldn't make clean contact.

Emiliano Martínez collected the loose ball calmly, slowed the tempo, and rolled a simple pass to Gabriel.

Before the teenager could drive forward again…

Peeeeep!

The referee blew the final whistle.

It was over.

Gabriel stood still for a moment, smiling as the noise around him grew even louder.

The television cameras followed his every step.

Abel Ferreira walked onto the pitch, wrapped him in a hug, and patted him proudly on the back.

The supporters remained on their feet, singing long after the match had ended.

The commentator delivered his final words.

"And that is the final whistle at Allianz Parque. The opening match of Palmeiras' 2025 season ends unforgettably.

Palmeiras 1, Botafogo 0—and the hero on his debut is Gabriel Silver."
