Chapter 120: Challenging the Riverton Gym!!
It was true that Pupitar was a pseudo-legendary, but it hadn't evolved into its final form yet. Its base stats were even lower than Pelipper's, not to mention its 4x weakness to Water.
Under these circumstances, Kenji dared to send out Pupitar first. Was he crazy?
Pupitar (4-Star)
Level: 40
...
Equipment: Sterak's Gage, Bloodthirster, Edge of Night
Sterak's Gage
Base Stats: Physical Attack +10, HP +10
Effect: When health drops below a certain threshold, generates a shield equal to 40% of max HP for 10 seconds.
"Sandstorm!!"
Kenji naturally couldn't let Pelipper control the weather.
"Pupitar!!—"
Hearing the command, Pupitar let out a cry from beneath its hard shell. It channeled the surrounding Ground and Rock energy. A gale whipped up from the ground, tearing a hole in the overcast sky. A fierce wind mixed with yellow sand began to rage across the battlefield.
"Water Pulse!!" Taking advantage of Pupitar's focus on changing the weather, Marina ordered Pelipper to launch a Water Pulse.
While channeling Sandstorm, Pupitar couldn't dodge the attack.
Fortunately, just before the Water Pulse hit, the Sandstorm move completed. The rainy weather was torn apart, replaced by a raging sandstorm.
As the weather changed, a faint, barely perceptible yellow glow enveloped Pupitar.
This was the special boost Rock-type Pokémon received in a sandstorm: Special Defense increased by 1.5 times.
"P-Pupitar..."
Pupitar took the hit from Water Pulse. It hurt, but it wasn't critical.
The Filter ability reduced the super-effective damage by one-fourth, and the weather boost increased its Special Defense by 1.5 times.
Battles aren't turn-based games. Without pausing, Pelipper fired another Water Pulse.
"Dig! Go underground!!"
Pupitar leaped, diving headfirst into the ground.
The moment Pupitar disappeared, the Water Pulse struck the empty spot.
"Use Hydro Pump into the hole! Force it out!!" Marina commanded, seizing the opportunity.
"Pelli!!!—"
Pelipper gathered a massive amount of Water energy in its mouth, then unleashed a column of water as thick as the hole itself, blasting it downward.
Just before Pelipper fired, Kenji issued his command.
"Use Protect!! Borrow the force of the Hydro Pump! Max power Giga Impact!!"
Marina frowned. Realizing Kenji's plan, her heart skipped a beat. But Pelipper had already fired, and the recoil from Hydro Pump left it briefly immobilized.
"BOOM!!!—"
The Hydro Pump blasted into the hole, causing a rumbling sound from underground.
Kenji clenched his fists, staring at the ground beneath Pelipper.
"BOOM!!!—"
The next instant, the ground exploded. A pillar of water erupted from beneath the surface.
In the center of the water column, a white light shot upward like a cannonball, propelled by the force of the water, straight toward the airborne Pelipper.
It was Pupitar, using the force of the Hydro Pump to launch a Giga Impact!
"PUPITAR!!!"
"THUD!!!!—"
"PELLI!!!—"
Pupitar's steel-hard body slammed into the defenseless Pelipper like a missile.
A critical hit!!!—
Pelipper's eyes bulged, and the bird was sent flying, tracing a parabolic arc before crashing to the ground.
"P-Pupitar..."
Pupitar landed back on the ground, temporarily immobilized by the recoil of Giga Impact.
Both Kenji and Marina focused their gaze on Pelipper.
One second, two seconds...
Pelipper struggled to get up, but under the buffeting of the sandstorm, its eyes turned into swirls. With a thud, it collapsed again.
The sandstorm damage was the final straw that broke the camel's back.
"Beautifully done!! Pupitar!"
Kenji cheered.
"Pupitar!!—" Pupitar responded to Kenji's excitement.
Marina recalled Pelipper, her expression turning serious.
Pelipper's easy defeat was partly due to Kenji's command, but mostly due to Marina's underestimation.
She had subconsciously looked down on Pupitar because of its 4x weakness to Water.
Adjusting her mindset, Marina threw her second Pokéball.
"Go! Gastrodon!!"
A red light flew onto the field, revealing a blue, unassuming Pokémon with a green shell on its back.
Gastrodon (East Sea)
Level: 58
Type: Ground/Water
Ability: Storm Drain (Draws in all Water-type moves to boost its Special Attack; takes no damage from Water moves.)
Potential: B-
There it was! The bane of Kyogre!!
Gastrodon possessed an excellent Ground/Water typing, leaving it with only one weakness: a 4x weakness to Grass. With its Ground typing and Storm Drain ability, it had two immunities.
Its wide move pool and excellent resistances made Gastrodon a popular choice in PVP battles.
"Return, Pupitar."
Kenji recalled Pupitar and slowly took another Pokéball from his belt.
"Go! Bellossom!!!"
"Lii-lii~~~"
Bellossom appeared, twirling elegantly in place.
"What a beautiful Bellossom," Wesley, the Pokémon Breeder on the sidelines, exclaimed, his eyes lighting up at the sight.
